Eventually, I'll probably have a small monitor box (at a third site :) that pushes the right DNS for the service that's up, or maybe just proxies to the up server.

proxies are great when DDOS is a potential, put the proxy where DDOS is easier to defend (more bandwidth, more capable staff/network to thwart DDOS) then let your actual data reside on unknown remote hosting centers that are economcial for hosting data not receving DDOS stuff. an interesting technique I read about a few years back.

my most memorable thing to do with traffic shaping was to throttle all incoming email from windows machines to share a single 56k virtual link :)

I had some ping timeouts.  It took several attempts to get in via ssh.
It seems to be localized to kvr12.
