kantotHello, I have a FreeBSD VPS that has /29. I have already added the IP address on its interface but there are 2 IP's which I can't ping.
What seems to be the problem?
[04:03]
....... (idle for 33mn)
RandalSchwartzyou added *all* the IP addresses?
or just the first one
if you don't add (alias) the others, it'll respond only to the one you added.
[04:36]
kantotI added an alias for the others
ifconfig_em0_alias0
ifconfig_em0_alias1
and so on
[04:37]
RandalSchwartzAhh. I did it the easier way. :)
... ipv4_addrs_em0=208.79.95.2-14/28
that assigns 2 through 14 to em0
no need for all those extra ifconfig
[04:38]
kantotfrom the 5 IP's 3 works, 2 which I can't ping [04:38]
RandalSchwartzyou'll have a similar range
you've rebooted since setting it up?
and you didn't accidentally pick the network or broadcast adddr?
[04:38]
kantotyes I've rebooting the machine [04:39]
RandalSchwartzlike for me, .0 is network, .1 is router, .15 is broadcast
so I get only 2-14
[04:39]
kantottried*
same as /etc/rc.d/netif restart && /etc/rc.d/routing restart
[04:39]
RandalSchwartztry the ipv4_addrs_em0 method. It's far easier to read [04:40]
kantotok thanks [04:40]
RandalSchwartzonce I discovered that, I ripped out a bunch of messy lines
you still need defaultrouter=
and maybe gateway_enable=YES
but those three lines suffice.
yours of course would be N.N.N.X-Y/29 where X is your base +2, and Y is your base +6
you might also verify that you don't have an overly ambitious filrewall somewhere

kantotit works now
thanks alot
[04:47]
RandalSchwartzcool!
no problem
are you new to ARP?
[04:47]
kantotI only added ipv4_addrs_em0= [04:47]
RandalSchwartzI've been here for 16 months [04:47]
kantotYep [04:47]
RandalSchwartzyou removed the alias lines too, right?
not needed.
[04:47]
kantotI didn't add gateway_enable=YES
I commented it
[04:47]
RandalSchwartzI have gateway_enable because I have openvpn
so I have to route from my VLAN to my main public IP
and also my jails when I was experimenting with that
[04:48]
kantotnice
I have openvpn before
but it messed up my settings
which eventually living me to reset back factory defaults
I had a hard time configuring openvpn
[04:49]
RandalSchwartzyes it requires a keen eye and a steady hand :)
ok - time to break this 40 cents a minute connection (I'm on a cruise ship :)
RandalSchwartz wanders off
