HighJinx has joined #arpnetworks pjs: hey guys.. quick question.. I want to move my 6 VPS's from rackspace to arpnetworks (freebsd!) but only 2 of them are actually public facing.. everything else is internal traffic.. I assume that's ok (correct?) and am curious if all the bandwidth gets pooled together? Since 4 of them will not be using any external bandwidth at all (or extremely little) will that be pooled into the 2 public facing instances? Lefty: pjs: I believe you can get intra-VPS private IPs
and they don't count against your bandwidth allocation pjs: Lefty, right.. I assumed internal traffic was unmetered.. but im just curious if the external bandwith I'm paying for is available for "spill over" from the 2 public facing.. bGeorge: ls
oops up_the_irons: pjs: bandwidth is aggregated, so 1 vps can use all the bandwidth and the rest can use none, or in whatever distribution you want
pjs: vps' belonging to the same account are on the same vlan, so internal traffic is not counted by way of design, no private IPs are even needed
traffic on that subnet does not enter/leave the VLAN, so it is not counted in the usage graphs
pjs: so for two public facing VPS', be sure you choose a /29 when you place your order, so you'll have more than 1 IP available pjs: up_the_irons, I see.. are private IP's available? ie, 1 public facing will have just 1 IP, the other will need 4 IP's.. so I guess I'd need a /28 up_the_irons: pjs: heh, by nature, private IPs are private so you don't need to request them from me, you can use however many you want :) pjs: up_the_irons, sorry, I guess I should ask is there a second interface available? though I guess it doens't matter, especially in a private vlan situation. up_the_irons: pjs: your account (as with all accounts here at ARP) is on a separate vlan than other customers, so the private IPs will not conflict with one another
pjs: second interface is available, yes, but as you said, not really even needed pjs: up_the_irons, awesome.. is there an imaging type option? ie, I can easily setup other instances without going through a lot of the setup? lol up_the_irons: pjs: no imaging yet, sorry
pjs: you could, however, set up one VM the way you wanted it, and send a request to support to clone it pjs: up_the_irons, ok awesome! I'd probably need to do that to save time. So for a /28, the cost is $10/mo? ***: fink has joined #arpnetworks up_the_irons: pjs: it is $13 ($1 per usable IP); thought you only needed two of the VMs to be public though? pjs: up_the_irons, Ah right.. I keep forgetting about the private vlans.. Just thinking of the current setup at rackspace and how I need to mimic it ;)
fink, sup man.. whats your name again for the referral? I want to make sure you get your t-shirt
;) up_the_irons: lol pjs: up_the_irons, so when I originally order, I just specify the /29 and I can add to my acount later via clones, correct?
up_the_irons, order sent :) up_the_irons: pjs: yes, exactly
pjs: sweet, I'll get it set up shortly :) pjs: please credit fink with the referral.. I noted that in the comments heh
up_the_irons, I see you guys are in One Wilshire as well as some other DTLA DC's.. -: pjs also in LA up_the_irons: pjs: mainly in CoreSite (aka Wilshire Annex) pjs: I closed down my cage in Peer1's DC last year to move to rackspace.. sure miss fbsd though and that isn't an option with them up_the_irons: pjs: no reason freebsd can't be an option with modern virtualization technology. you've come to the right place :) pjs: up_the_irons, in fact, I have like 4-5 P4 3ghz 2-4gb ram servers.. if you have any use for them I'd gladly trade them for a free couple of months lol -: fink is finally getting his arpnetworks tshirt, wohoo!! up_the_irons: LOL pjs: fink ;) up_the_irons: pjs: send me some pics of the servers and i'll give it consideration :) pjs: up_the_irons, cool.. will do :) up_the_irons: pjs: fyi, I'm getting a little low on vps slots, but i have a new server coming online next week. so i may not be able to set up all 6 VMs immediately, hope that is OK with your timeframe pjs: up_the_irons, that's fine. I can actually get by just fine with 4.. but I'll take my time getting these setup anyways..
as long as I can get it done in 2-3 weeks I should be fine up_the_irons: pjs: oh yeah, that's no problem pjs: up_the_irons, in fact, I'll probably just go with 5, with 1 of them being a 256 or 512.. mainly for testing new puppet configs, etc. up_the_irons: cool pjs: awesome.. well thanks! amazing that I can actually speak with you directly.. big relief as rackspace techs are a joke up_the_irons: LOL
pjs: no problem :)
pjs: back in the day, i heard rackspace techs were pretty good; is this no longer the case? pjs: well, support isn't bad actually, but I usually have to notify them of any issues going on.. up_the_irons: LOL
i c pjs: more than once there has been some sort of DoS against someone who's on a switch I shared and it would effect talk between my servers.. breaking my services and has my clients yelling :)
and I'd have to notify them
anyways.. food.. bbiab reardencode: up_the_irons: what order of magnitude of VPSs do you host (if you don't mind)? up_the_irons: reardencode: a good handful ;) reardencode: mmm, bigger than a bread box. ***: phreak has joined #arpnetworks
