bharatak has joined #arpnetworks jpalmer: littel known fact: I'm awesome. That is all. -: mike-burns takes notes jpalmer: lol ***: Tepetkhet has joined #arpnetworks Tepetkhet: Good morning. ix33: morning Tepetkhet: I don't usually use web IRC, but for some reason Adium wouldn't connect (and I don't care enough this morning to try to figure out why). ix33: on a mac? Tepetkhet: At the moment, yes. wIRCing. ;) ix33: every try colloquy? Tepetkhet: No, I have not. I usually just ssh into my co-located server and use BitchX... coobra: no
use irssi
weechat
:p ix33: colloquy is a good client on os x
and +1 on irssi in your term Tepetkhet: But, see, that's what brings me here. Poor co-lo server is aaaancient and I think it's finally giving up the ghost. ix33: where do you colo? Tepetkhet: So I'm looking at alternatives. ix33: Tepetkhet: then you should definitely go with arpnetworks VPS Tepetkhet: I used to work for this awesome small ISP in Berkeley, CA.
And I still have a box in their NOC for insanely cheap prices. ix33: Tepetkhet: nice. insanely cheap is hard to beat. Tepetkhet: But I'm going to be geographically distant from there soon, and looking at alternatives. I also stopped caring so much about maintaining my own physical box.
But I am something of a control freak and like having root.
Somebody told me a VPS might be the way to go. ix33: Tepetkhet: arpnetworks VPS is a great service
do you have a geo preference? Tepetkhet: That is what "they" say. ix33: you make it sound ominous and conspiritorial?
;) Tepetkhet: hehe
"They" are faceless Internet people. You know how "they" are these days.
Although posters on the FreeBSD mailing list rarely live under bridges, if you know what I mean. ix33: you'd think so, but i've been monitoring openbsd misc@ and tech@, and even they have a few Tepetkhet: That's too bad. ix33: although who doesn't enjoy the occasional richard stallman troll? Tepetkhet: haha
rms
Sounds like it should be something in a medical dictionary. "I have this nasty case of rms that's cramping my fingers up in the mornings..." ix33: so you use freebsd then? Tepetkhet: Yeah ix33: how long does a build world take nowadays? Tepetkhet: Haha, so...that's part of the problem...my box is so incredibly ancient and I've moved out of that sort of work. It's still on FreeBSD 4.x ix33: wow Tepetkhet: I think they're up to 8.x now. ix33: 8.2 just came out i think Tepetkhet: When I was working for ISPs, I was all in that stuff all day.
But now I'm doing tech support for a desktop software company. ix33: oh great. fire alarm.
bbl Tepetkhet: Which ends up being a lot of sales and customer service junk.
Ah, fun. ix33: another facilities screw-up
we have more false alarms here than any place i've ever been
Tepetkhet: so, if you're a freebsd-er you should at least try out one of the small vps-es ASAP
you get VNC console control, remote serial access, remote reboot, the works Tepetkhet: Let me think about how best to put this. This is going to be really embarrassing. I'm so far behind and so far removed from that "world" now, but I really love being able to set up my own e-mail aliases...have a shell account to SSH into...use PINE for my e-mail...set up my own virtual hosts and stuff in my apache http conf files and stuff. But, ah...
I don't really like doing the updating / upgrading and stuff so much anymore.
>_>
With a VPS, it's sort of like having a virtual co-lo? Right?
But I still do all the OS patching and upgrades and whatnot? ***: Jason_Wood has joined #arpnetworks RandalSchwartz: with ARP VPS, it's just like you have an empty box on the rack ix33: Tepetkhet: it's your box. arpnetworks is very much a, "here's the root password, go nuts" type of place RandalSchwartz: they'll do initial loading of the OS
but after that, it's up to you to totally manage
if you're not a good sysadmin, that's not for you. ix33: ty, RandalSchwartz
for example, i'm about to bin-upgrade my two VPSes to the lastest openbsd 4.9-current ;) Tepetkhet: I'm a bad sysadmin. Very rusty.
VERY rusty. I mean, I set it up like...10 years ago, maybe? sheath: well if you mess up, you can always reinstall :) mike-burns: If you don't want to manage upgrades and sysadmin stuff in general then ARP isn't for you. Tepetkhet: Back then, I was all in that stuff every day, you know? But I'm so far removed from that. Current job has me "reaching out" to customers and trying to upsell them rather than fixing anything. :/ mike-burns: Tepetkhet: http://www.devio.us/ - this is more of a "don't manage anything" style shell. But you trade a lot of freedom, flexibility, and fun for this route. Tepetkhet: Is there a type of service out there that's sort of...in between?
I think it's more a testament to how stable FreeBSD is than to my sysadminning ability that my poor box has run so long without problems other than hardware failures. ix33: i've never really done a managed vps service, so i don't know if there even are any out there
managed dedicated is doggone expensive, so i just take the time to do it myself Tepetkhet: Probably true. ix33: especially if you are used to 'insanely cheap' ;) Tepetkhet: I just get really sad sometimes because I feel I'm getting more braindead every day. Maybe I just need to get out of this job...I think it's killing my brain cells and replacing them with a corpspeak dictionary.
"We're replaced Tepetkhet's geek node with the rich taste of Folger's Crystals. Let's see if Tep notices!" ix33: you could always go dig up an old PC and install on that till you get your nerd-fu back Tepetkhet: Hmmm...there's a thought.
I do have an old IBM workstation and a G5 Mac sitting around doing nothing...
"Donated" from work. Muahaha
So basically, to give you an idea...I have an ordinary tower system that I built with an ancient ASUS P5A motherboard...sitting in a co-lo at an ISP in Berkeley that has a gasoline-powered generator etc....for $25/month. ix33: Tepetkhet: will they let you switch it out for a new one? Tepetkhet: Possibly, but if I'm not in the Bay Area anymore, that'll be a bit difficult to manage.
A physical co-lo is only good if your arms are long enough to reach it, methinks. ix33: got a friend in the DC to help? Tepetkhet: Well, they help me out with a reboot and a fsck every now and then, but that's about the extent they can really help with the "hands". ix33: boy, i could make plenty of trouble with a $25/mo full tower colo Tepetkhet: heh
I know, right? ix33: so where are you moving? Tepetkhet: It was actually free for several years, even after I quit working there. They're good people.
Possibly relocating to Austin, TX area. ix33: oh awesome
austin is a great place Tepetkhet: I hear lots of people / tech companies moving out of the SF Bay area to there. ix33: well it sounds like you are at least familiar with remote admin concepts
you can always get yourself back up to speed with a local machine
or get a small VPS from almost any provider and see if it's something you're comfortable with for at least a month ***: robotarmy has joined #arpnetworks ix33: but, as you know, $25/mo is an impossibly good deal unless you know someone
(for a dedicated server, that is) Tepetkhet: Exactly RandalSchwartz: "but I know lots of people!" Tepetkhet: *laugh*
That's about the price range of VPSes, though, right? ix33: yes.
check: http://arpnetworks.com/vps RandalSchwartz: You can get a lot more here for a $20 VPS than I could get for a dedicated box two years ago for $100 ***: heavysixer has quit IRC (Quit: heavysixer) RandalSchwartz: and with a dedicated box, if it fails, you have to figure out how to reboot onto a new box.
with a VPS, if the underlying hardware fails, ARP moves you to new hardware transparently.
I think a VPS is really the only way to go now. -: dferris agrees Tepetkhet: Sounds like it.

Does freenode have a good "FreeBSD Help" type channel? I've forgotten a lot of terms and would use Google if I knew what to Google for (and usually I'm pretty decent at googling stuff up).
