up_the_irons: yo, if we ordered another VPS, would you be able to set it up tonight? just need the standard ubuntu image what's the performance penalty of VPS vs bare metal under 10%? no answer? depends what you're doing... how much does it depend? :) just trying to get a ballpark has anyone tried running a typical webserver on both metal and a VPS? You'd need to compare an identical machine with an identical VPS. I know what has to be done. I'm just wondering if anyone *here* made decisions based on having done that or read about it. Fair enough. I haven't, no. since many people here pick a VPS, just wondering if anyone wonders if they should have a bare metal instead. Oh no wait, my company just did. i dont need bare metal We just switched to bare metal for one of our projects (Hoptoad) because the cloud hosting we used shared DB resources. http://robots.thoughtbot.com/post/3743877956/hoptoad-the-cloud-and-the-pond-ahead - lots of non-relevant details and no great numbers, but we had IO issues and CPU issues. but was that to get dedicated DB, or to get away from XEN? Get away from ... well I don't know if it was Xen (I don't work on the Hoptoad project), but to get full control over HDDs. there's an apache benchmark at http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_kvm_history&num=2 fair enough. I do get the impression disk IO can be a big problem with virtual machines, more so than CPU bound stuff. at least if you assuming the CPU support VT extensions these apps are mostly memory and CPU intensive disk IO is minimal... maybe a new file every few seconds. I presume the expense is at the syscall boundary anyway if those are kept to a minimum, can't be a big issue. in the end, vps will work, question is, will it work well enough .. and that depends on factors like popularity and efficiency of the apps etc. in most cases it comes down to 'short term investment in efficient resource utilization design vs lower initial but larger long term investment for bare metal for somewhat snappier performance' .. IMHO ;-) nice.. http://www.mail-archive.com/tmux-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg00401.html http://superuser.com/questions/200748/launching-tmux-using-gnome-terminal/200783#200783 amdprophet: sorry, wasn't awake last night (a rare occurance) amdprophet: i'll get you the vps today np our API is getting smashed to bits need to expand LOL :P ~ 200,000 requests a day mostly when people in north america are off work / school each request usually needs to scrape a website with html that isn't following standards correctly amdprophet: whf are you upto :p mobile application Reach Service Record for iOS + Android amdprophet: this runs off your vps(s) ? yup SWEET even supports IPv6 for anything hitting our API too nice amdprophet: btw, PM me a free IP you want to use for the new vps (if you didn't already do it in the order comments) I think we did in the order comments I think 236 and 238 are free, so lets go with 236 need two interfaces (one for internal use) http://www.reddit.com/r/PS3/comments/g6a1x/free_dlc_for_killzone_3_gran_turismo_5_and/ free DLC (I know you've got a PS3 garry :p) LOL nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo rofl amdprophet: ooh a htc app? yea, you should be able to run it on your htc android you can use one of our gamertags to test it out if you want... here's mine - "Justin Kolberg" still a possibility of getting a few crashes in the app, but most of them should be fixed I am not very smart with my phone is it on the market thing? yea just search Reach Service Record amdprophet: cool looking app. you should make a COD version :) contacted the devs, no response yet wickedSA: thank you, btw, for recommending The Wire. i'm almost done with Season 1. very good show!! lol the wire is awesome haha also, breaking bad oh YES, breaking bad is the BOMB so amazing so sad they delayed it until July yea :(
