[08:39] no answer? [08:39] depends what you're doing... [08:40] *** Zuul_ has joined #arpnetworks [08:40] *** Zuul has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 276 seconds) [08:41] how much does it depend? :) [08:41] just trying to get a ballpark [08:41] has anyone tried running a typical webserver on both metal and a VPS? [08:42] You'd need to compare an identical machine with an identical VPS. [08:42] I know what has to be done. I'm just wondering if anyone *here* made decisions based on having done that or read about it. [08:42] Fair enough. I haven't, no. [08:43] since many people here pick a VPS, just wondering if anyone wonders if they should have a bare metal instead. [08:43] Oh no wait, my company just did. [08:43] i dont need bare metal [08:43] We just switched to bare metal for one of our projects (Hoptoad) because the cloud hosting we used shared DB resources. [08:44] http://robots.thoughtbot.com/post/3743877956/hoptoad-the-cloud-and-the-pond-ahead - lots of non-relevant details and no great numbers, but we had IO issues and CPU issues. [08:45] but was that to get dedicated DB, or to get away from XEN? [08:46] Get away from ... well I don't know if it was Xen (I don't work on the Hoptoad project), but to get full control over HDDs. [08:46] there's an apache benchmark at http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_kvm_history&num=2 [08:46] fair enough. [08:46] I do get the impression disk IO can be a big problem with virtual machines, more so than CPU bound stuff. at least if you assuming the CPU support VT extensions [08:47] these apps are mostly memory and CPU intensive [08:47] disk IO is minimal... maybe a new file every few seconds. [08:48] I presume the expense is at the syscall boundary anyway [08:48] if those are kept to a minimum, can't be a big issue. [09:04] in the end, vps will work, question is, will it work well enough .. and that depends on factors like popularity and efficiency of the apps etc. in most cases it comes down to 'short term investment in efficient resource utilization design vs lower initial but larger long term investment for bare metal for somewhat snappier performance' .. IMHO ;-) [09:24] *** ziyourenxiang has joined #arpnetworks [09:26] *** HighJinx has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving) [09:30] *** LT has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving) [10:28] *** fink_ has joined #arpnetworks [10:28] *** fink has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 250 seconds) [10:28] *** fink_ is now known as fink [10:32] *** ziyourenxiang has quit IRC (Quit: ziyourenxiang) [10:37] *** HighJinx has joined #arpnetworks [10:49] *** amdprophet has joined #arpnetworks [11:25] nice.. http://www.mail-archive.com/tmux-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg00401.html [11:30] http://superuser.com/questions/200748/launching-tmux-using-gnome-terminal/200783#200783 [12:17] *** d-fens has quit IRC (Quit: leaving) [12:24] *** cubelogic has joined #arpnetworks [13:17] amdprophet: sorry, wasn't awake last night (a rare occurance) [13:17] amdprophet: i'll get you the vps today [13:46] np [13:47] our API is getting smashed to bits [13:47] need to expand [14:06] LOL [14:10] :P [14:10] ~ 200,000 requests a day [14:11] mostly when people in north america are off work / school [14:11] each request usually needs to scrape a website with html that isn't following standards correctly [14:11] amdprophet: whf are you upto :p [14:12] mobile application [14:12] Reach Service Record [14:12] for iOS + Android [14:22] amdprophet: this runs off your vps(s) ?
