I think I need to stop being quite as much of a cheapskate and upgrade a little :P I didn't realize I was using as much space on my current web server for images as I am :P upgrades welcome! up_the_irons: oh I had one other question - does it hurt your ability to do whatever you might need to do if there's no getty's on "physical" tty's, but boot messages and a tty only on serial? raptelan: no up_the_irons: cool, and email sent :) cool :) I was going up upgrade not long ago, but I'm too busy now to give it the attention it needs. It is running fine I guess. If it does degrade I will do it then. I think my favorite thing about VPS's is easy (*cough* depending on provider *cough*) serial and kvm access, which is annoyingly costly with hardware. I used to do colocation and decent network hardware for those is *not cheap*. With power the price it is, its not cheap to self host things at home even if you do have a good enough connection. I might run a little ARM based board when BuddyCloud or something gets up to scratch - but I guess it also means keeping my modem running 24/7 which chews a bit of power. Obviously I am a student. So really I am better off just keeping it on the VPS. buddycloud? merky, internap sucks cock buddycloud is kinda like diaspora - but not shit and run by people who know what they are doing. nice, buddycloud looks cool what's the idea DDevine ? key: Secret for now ;) up_the_irons: vpslink used to have some sort of java app thingy that I believe was a VNC client as it would show your vps console. I don't think they did anything with serial although that should be equally possible. In any case, it was a really nice feature, but one day "went away", and now they don't have any client access to vps's with broken networking. :P I got in a fight with VPSlink over their shitty provisioning lol. Needless to say I wouldn't go with them again or their parent company. DDevine: I used to work there :P Oh so you're the smartass that was giving me shit. DDevine: no, I just did database/programming work a bit. DDevine: I was there for less than half a year :P DDevine: but uhhh yeah, they pretty much sux. DDevine: a host server with 4GB of RAM and a boatload of swap would be hosting VPS's with like 64GB of RAM. *combined DDevine: the ironic thing was that vpslink customers actually have it a little better since they're less oversubscribed than the spry services, which cost more :P DDevine: and if you like, you know, actually *used* your VPS, it was frowned upon, and you ended up getting moved to a "bad boy" mega-oversubscribed box with all the other people who didn't have a mostly-idle VPS :P Yeah I don't understand why spry was more expensive. DDevine: phone support. Really? The LAST thing I want is to talk to some idiot on the phone. DDevine: aww, come on. All non-escalated calls are answered in India. Argh. DDevine: I think you're racist. No not racist I just prefer people who actually work for the company they are answering the phone for. anyways there were 8 indian folks, and Spry assigned them very southern american typical names...from some hillbilly tv show characters :P "Pradesh, you go by 'Travis'; Ramakrishna, you go by 'Buddy'" :P I'm not sure how convincing that was :P DDevine: they are cheap though - I ended up signing up for some VPS's after I was gone to spec out a physical network before having hardware. That was kind of...umm...dumb. :P the only really nice thing about it is that I could sit in a web browser, and provision up new servers in a matter of minutes, without ever interacting with their staff. Yeah. You could probably use Amazon for that too. DDevine: and I meant to put a ':P' comment after my racist comment since it was just a joke :P Hey did you work on the billing system? DDevine: aaaaarglthe painof the memories.... Not really, no, it was a real pile. Some 3rd party absolute junk. I had to write some reports on it though. The piece of junk really screws you up if you accidentially provide the wrong payment details. DDevine: it screws you in many cases. DDevine: I just remember that sql queries that should have been simple were really long and complex to handle all the weird exception cases. DDevine: http://casey.shobe.info/images/Screenshots/Gabrielle2/gabrielle2-1.png (that's my interface, not the software) http://casey.shobe.info/images/Screenshots/Gabrielle2/gabrielle2-3.png That should have been simple to write, but I'm not sure how bad the database was. well it was like, I'd write some report, but it would be wrong, and I'd look into why and have to add some exceptions, then find it was still off, and add some more exceptions, and uhhh yeah. it was real "fun". I wanted to replace it but didn't stay there long enough to undertake that. I was going to do some study, but its 12:45 now. I had better get to bed so I can get up before 12:00. up_the_irons, I considered asking you, but we needed a place on the east coast hmm had some weird issues with my vm hrm, my IPv6 connectivity seems broken. mine is ok sorry for the confusion. I meant at home. and it was a bad route. fixed now ah :) saw on twitter you were looking for people to join .. so .. hi :-) new customer here wow, quiet for a channel with 74 people in it sup how ya liking the service? arpnetworks is the greatest thing ever. 10:24P how ya liking the service?
