these servers are so small, you can't even see them!

smaller irc servers are just as big of targets for ddos
freenode also suffers from terminal stupidity, ie the javascript-based attacks of a year or so ago
sometimes even more so
due to obusive operator behavio
because whoever configures the servers decided anti-spoofing protection, that's been in every ircd since the dawn of time, was no longer necessary :P
spoofing is the dumbest idea ever
if you spoof someone
it just means they will packet your server
instead of that person

*shrugs* i've been attached to IRC since the late 90s (yea, i'm a young adopter) so I can't not run one to support my 20 person irc network haha
jdoe: then you also have the fact the same organization responsible for that attack
also hacked their admin passwords like 2-3 times
and ruined the whole network for extended periods of time
