[08:25] *** schmir has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) [08:44] *** robotarmy has joined #arpnetworks [08:52] I'm having a funky issue with my openbsd vps.. I patched and built the updated -stable kernel, but when I boot the new kernel the VPS complains because it says it can't find init. I've got to use VNC to tell it to boot the old 4.8 kernel.. It is really weird [08:53] Has anyone else reported this issue? I'm not sure if it is QEMU related, something I'm doing wrong, or something with OpenBSD itself [08:54] another reason I'm not using openbsd any more. :) [08:54] but sorry, no, can't help ya. [08:55] I wonder if it'd be possible to run the same emulation software that arp uses to make debugging easier [08:55] of course, I'd have to run it inside vmware running linux somehwere, probably [08:55] er.. I doubt the problem is with the operating system, but I'm not ruling it out as a possibility. [08:55] well - just saying, freebsd just works [08:55] so it might indeed be an openbsd problem [08:56] not having the right driver or low-level interface [08:56] presuming something about the virtual hardware that isn't true [08:56] but that could be a fault of the virtualizer as well [08:56] the 4.8 kernel works fine. I'm just applying a few patches, nothing major [08:56] *** fink has joined #arpnetworks [08:56] then it's likely something in those patches, eh? [08:57] hi RandalSchwartz [08:57] or in how the sources are fetched, or something. [08:57] But, yeah, OpenBSD doesn't work for crap on Xen, VirtualBox or VMWare. But, it works with KVM and QEMU, that is my experience anyway. [08:58] hey fink [09:08] N1JER: heh, is it the mpbios issue? [09:08] or rather, did you remember to disable it? [09:09] jdoe: nope.. I'm aware of that [09:09] dunno then [09:09] I'm fetching from a different mirror and trying again [09:09] blew away my /usr/src dir.. [09:09] I probably did something wrong [09:11] dunno. [09:11] I'm lazy, I haven't touched mine since it was provisioned. [09:26] jdoe: did yours start with 4.8 or 4.7? [09:26] Mine was with 4.7 and I upgraded to 4.8 [09:26] but this is the first time I've tried to use a kernel that I built [09:29] i upgraded to 4.8 a few weeks ago [09:29] had no problems [09:29] besides having to change a kernel flag [09:30] vcs: yeah, the upgrade to 4.8 was fine for me as well, except the mpbios flag [09:30] yep [09:39] *** fink has quit IRC (Quit: fink) [09:40] N1JER: 4.6 [09:40] !!! [09:41] shrug. It works. [09:42] Yeah, 4.6 was a good vintage :) [09:43] the stuff that affects me is patched. The stuff that isn't, who cares. [09:45] hrm, actually I take that back, apparently support only goes back 2 versions. Oops. [09:45] ... though there's still nothing that affects me. Huzzah. [09:45] ... guess I should look into how to upgrade :P [09:49] jdoe: since we don't have access to boot media you have to do the 'unsupported' upgrade in place [09:49] which, I've found over the years, to work just fine [09:50] darn it, same thing happened. [09:51] er... is that actually the case? I thought it just required a helping hand from up_the_irons to swap the media in the virtual drive. [09:51] jdoe: oh really? I didn't know we could do that at arp :) [09:52] yeah, just provide a URL in email to support@ [09:53] yeah, though that might be a PITA if I want to do two back-to-back as well. [09:53] my install is barely customized, I imagine the unsupported one is fairly safe... [09:53] once it's done, on your next complete powerdown, the new disk is "in the drive" [09:53] so it's completely up to you when the swap happens [09:54] apparently, the vm won't allow drive changes while the vm is powered up [09:54] odd. [09:54] I think it's a settings file that gets read only on coldboot [09:55] so he's not actually forcing a drive eject from the "outsode" [09:55] that might be difficult for $random_operating_system [09:56] cool - iphone app talkatone lets you make free US/Canada calls using google voice and google talk. [09:56] I wonder how long before *that* is blocked. :) [10:04] depends on how uptight your provider is, I guess.
