up_the_ironsI received a new /20 from ARIN, yay, but not a low number block like I had hoped. Too bad, b/c that will probably be the last IPv4 allocation I'll ever get (we'll run out before I need more)
206.162.240.0/20
I already have something in the 206.x block
[20:37]
jdoeI didn't think anything especially low was freeing. [20:40]
up_the_ironsyeah [20:41]
luckyheh, on my VPS after a reinstall, I didn't configure IPv4 right away because I didn't need it ... hopefully that'll be the norm soon enough. [20:43]
jdoeI wonder if we're gonna have to go through carrier grade nat before ipv6... [20:43]
luckymuch of the world with fewer IPs already does that
China, Russia, etc.
my ISP is rolling out native IPv6 as a beta and a lot of American and European ISPs as I understand it are ready to do within the next year or two.
[20:45]
jdoechina does, but it's mostly for filtering purposes isn't it?
I don't know about russia.
I know some big isps in the states have been trialing ipv6, dunno about any in canada though, which is lame.
[20:47]
luckyteksavvy
IPv6 beta for DSL
[20:48]
jdoeanyone who's not about to get their business crushed :P [20:48]
luckythey give you a static /48, and they have some custom software for WRT54GL routers for it, even.
Yeah :/
[20:48]
jdoeie telus, bell, shaw, rogers, etc.
haven't heard about any of them doing it.
... though I'd kind of expect them to, better multicast options etc...
iptv
[20:48]
luckyI know Rogers has been doing internal stuff related to it for a couple years now. I wouldn't be surprised if they just have to switch it on and are avoiding doing so because what'll break. [20:49]
jdoeI dunno. There are downsides too. You'll be much more trackable.
RIP privacy. :P
[20:50]
luckyTrue. [20:51]
jdoedunno what you can really do about that, nobody's going to give out dhcp /48s, be pretty simple to figure out what blocks are owned by isps, what size blocks they assign etc.... [20:52]
