[02:54] bob^^: perhaps, but I did write threaded php app once to migrate over 500 imap accounts (about 35GB of data) [02:55] worked great :) [02:55] i'm sure it did [02:55] but i can't help but think it'd have been faster in C... etc [02:55] (i should add that i use php all the time - but it has its place!) [02:56] I can kinda agree to that [02:59] Python or Perl would have been a better choice. [03:00] why? it doesn't really matter as long as the job got done - no choice is better than any other unless you're aiming to improve speed [03:01] (imho, anyway!) [06:49] honestly though, in todays internet.. all RFC compliant mailservers will retry for several days. There is very little reason to run a backup MX. [06:53] Just keep backups of your primary :) [06:54] well, you can still run a mail *cluster* with only one MX. [06:55] ah true. [06:56] But if you're running a mail cluster you already know that. [11:55] trust me, I spent YEARS defending the whole "backup MX is a good thing" theory. in the end.. I was wrong. [11:56] yeah, since September when I set it up, the only time the backup MX got used was when I took the primary down for a moment, or when spammers tried to get around my postgrey filter [11:57] many spammers won't even try your primary. they know damned well that most admins are more lax with the backup, than the primary. [12:00] ahhh I'm equally strict w/ my backup [12:00] *** whitefang has joined #arpnetworks [12:04] sure. I'm not doubting/questining that. but realistically, how many times have you depended on that backup MX? now, how much time have you spent maintaining the servers associated with it? when you factor in the RFC mandatated delivery retries.. you're primary could be down for *days* (literally) without losing a single piece of email. [12:05] jpalmer: yeah it's a pretty good argument [12:07] *** robotarmy has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) [12:09] I'm more strict with my backup because of this. [12:13] G: no problem. [12:13] G: if you have delegation though, you should be able to change it. unless I'm missing something [12:14] jpalmer: no, I'm ditching my ns2 and replacing it w/ he.net's free secondary service [12:14] jpalmer: ns2 in setup as an NS as part of the delegation [12:15] G: ahh gotcha. sure. just specify what subnets you want delegated as part of the ticket. makes my life easier ;) [12:18] jpalmer: Maybe, but then again I don't care if I don't get e-mail from people running Exchange. :p [12:22] well, I guess thats your perogative ;) [12:31] *** heavysixer has quit IRC (Quit: BAMPF!) [12:48] depends on the environment. in some cases, you're on completely different MTA's, so rsyncing a postfix config to an exim secondary MX isn't going to work.
