mattx86 | curious, has anyone here used zfs-fuse and how does it stack up against the zfs in freebsd? | [02:27] |
DDevine | You can find a benchmark comparison of that on Phoronix.com | [02:35] |
bob^^ | moronix.com | [02:37] |

mattx86 | bob^^: is the site that bad? ;)
DDevine: thanks :) | [02:49] |
bob^^ | imho, yup... anyone who writes a benchmarking suite in php gets marked down in my book :) | [02:49] |
DDevine | It is a funny choice, but it works fine and is pretty portable. | [02:51] |
mattx86 | bob^^: perhaps, but I did write threaded php app once to migrate over 500 imap accounts (about 35GB of data)
worked great :) | [02:54] |
bob^^ | i'm sure it did
but i can't help but think it'd have been faster in C... etc (i should add that i use php all the time - but it has its place!) | [02:55] |
mattx86 | I can kinda agree to that | [02:56] |
DDevine | Python or Perl would have been a better choice. | [02:59] |
bob^^ | why? it doesn't really matter as long as the job got done - no choice is better than any other unless you're aiming to improve speed
(imho, anyway!) | [03:00] |

jpalmer | G: I'd generally recommend no backup MX. but if you insist on doing it, amke sure it's configured identically to the primary (as in, spam filters and pre-data checks) it becomes an administrative nightmare if one server is different than another. especially if the backup accepts mail that the rimary eventually rejects.
honestly though, in todays internet.. all RFC compliant mailservers will retry for several days. There is very little reason to run a backup MX. | [06:48] |
DDevine | Just keep backups of your primary :) | [06:53] |
jpalmer | well, you can still run a mail *cluster* with only one MX. | [06:54] |
DDevine | ah true. | [06:55] |
mike-burns | But if you're running a mail cluster you already know that. | [06:56] |
DDevine | Crap, I didn't notice the time and now its getting too late. | [06:57] |

G | jpalmer: oh I was commenting what to do w/ my existing backup MX | [11:51] |
*** | robotarmy has joined #arpnetworks | [11:52] |
jpalmer | ditch it. remove it from DNS!
backup MX's should die in an inferno! (well, in 99.9999% of cases) | [11:52] |
G | yeah, I'm starting to wonder the same thing... | [11:54] |
jpalmer | trust me, I spent YEARS defending the whole "backup MX is a good thing" theory. in the end.. I was wrong. | [11:55] |
G | yeah, since September when I set it up, the only time the backup MX got used was when I took the primary down for a moment, or when spammers tried to get around my postgrey filter | [11:56] |
jpalmer | many spammers won't even try your primary. they know damned well that most admins are more lax with the backup, than the primary. | [11:57] |
G | ahhh I'm equally strict w/ my backup | [12:00] |
*** | whitefang has joined #arpnetworks | [12:00] |
jpalmer | sure. I'm not doubting/questining that. but realistically, how many times have you depended on that backup MX? now, how much time have you spent maintaining the servers associated with it? when you factor in the RFC mandatated delivery retries.. you're primary could be down for *days* (literally) without losing a single piece of email. | [12:04] |
G | jpalmer: yeah it's a pretty good argument | [12:05] |
*** | robotarmy has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) | [12:07] |
mhoran | I'm more strict with my backup because of this.
... which in turn gets rid of the spammers. :) | [12:09] |
G | jpalmer: I'll send you another ticket to change the delegation of my reverse DNS, ditching my secondary as well :) | [12:13] |
jpalmer | mhoran: you should be the *same* strict with your backup if you insist on running one. haveing different configs between primary and secondary makes troubleshooting blocked messages and other issues much more difficult and time consuming.
G: no problem. G: if you have delegation though, you should be able to change it. unless I'm missing something | [12:13] |
G | jpalmer: no, I'm ditching my ns2 and replacing it w/ he.net's free secondary service
jpalmer: ns2 in setup as an NS as part of the delegation | [12:14] |
jpalmer | G: ahh gotcha. sure. just specify what subnets you want delegated as part of the ticket. makes my life easier ;) | [12:15] |
mhoran | jpalmer: Maybe, but then again I don't care if I don't get e-mail from people running Exchange. :p | [12:18] |
jpalmer | well, I guess thats your perogative ;) | [12:22] |

jdoe | I used to have a backup mx. I never saw any of the problems people usually associate with them.
I mean really, how hard is it to enumerate users on both servers, to have the same spam setup etc. the "maintenance" on the second server should be maybe an rsync at most haha. | [12:39] |
jpalmer | depends on the environment. in some cases, you're on completely different MTA's, so rsyncing a postfix config to an exim secondary MX isn't going to work. | [12:48] |
G | now that sounds like fun ;) | [12:51] |
jpalmer | G: I see your request. gimme a min | [12:59] |

G | woohoo all good now :)
now to claim that near $1000 from my previous provider :P | [13:12] |
