[19:59] <DDevine> Greetings.
[19:59] <DDevine> Having trouble with rDNS with my DNS hosting so I'm looking at getting a new provider.
[19:59] <DDevine> It is looking like I will use Amazon Route53 but does anybody have any other suggestions?
[20:03] <DDevine> The Route53 tools are interesting... Just a few perl scripts...
[20:04] <mike-burns> https://dnsimple.com/ - also has nice tools.
[20:05] <mike-burns> Never used them, though.
[20:05] <DDevine> mike-burns: They look good :)
[20:07] <DDevine> Actually, they might be the go!
[20:07] <mike-burns> I'd be interested in hearing how they work for you. They're starting to advertise and promote around the Ruby/Rails comunities.
[20:09] *** fink has quit IRC (Quit: fink)
[20:11] <DDevine> I tend to stay away from Ruby related stuff... I'm not sure how to delicately describe my opinion on most of those peoples views.
[20:12] <mike-burns> It might be worth knowing that I do a lot of work in the Ruby community for a slightly well-known Rails company.
[20:14] <jpalmer> DDevine: not sure of everything route53 offers. but if it's just dns hosting, dns.he.net is free, and solid.
[20:15] <DDevine> I am tossing up dnsimple who somehow are cheaper than Amazon (WTF???) and have all the features I want. And Amazon route53 with more features than I want, very cheap compared to nearly everywhere else and because of their minimalist tools it is likely I will get my hands dirty (which is kind-of a good thing).
[20:15] <DDevine> I have been using FreeDNS (paid) and the service is very good and I like the dude that runs it, but I can't make PTR records.
[20:16] <DDevine> It does does IPv6 reverse, but not IPv4.
[20:16] <jpalmer> check out http://dns.he.net
[20:16] <DDevine> jpalmer: checking it out now
[20:16] <jpalmer> no API's that I'm aware of though.
[20:17] <DDevine> jpalmer: I don't need dynamic DNS, so it is fine.
[20:17] <DDevine> They look good.
[20:19] <jpalmer> if it matters to you at all, I've had nagios monitoring all 5 NS's since I started using them, and up until yesterday, had NEVER seen a moment of outage on any of them (yesterday, ns3 was unavailable for about 10 mins, bu the other 4 were fine)
[20:19] <DDevine> I'm not one to dismiss free services, but I am wondering *how* he.net is free...
[20:19] <jpalmer> and ns2-ns5 are dual stacked, with IPv6 glue.
[20:20] <jpalmer> he.net is pushing hard for IPv6 adoption. they provide the free dns server, to help inflate the number of domains with IPv6 capable NS's.
[20:21] <jpalmer> the basic thought is, IPv6 is never going to take off, until users are using it, and a good portion of the content people are using, becomes avialble over IPv6. so they offer the free tunnels, and dns, and such.
[20:21] <DDevine> jpalmer: I like people who push for IPv6
[20:22] <DDevine> They seem fine, and I won't lose much (or anything) if it does not work out. Thanks!
[20:22] <jpalmer> np, good luck.
[20:22] <jpalmer> let me know how it works out for you.
[20:22] <DDevine> I'll definitely keep some notes on the suggestions.
[20:23] <jpalmer> btw: if it makes you feel more comfortable.. you can run a master NS, and jus thave HE slave the zones. so *even* if their services are unavailable (haven't seen that happen yet) your personal NS would still be up and serving requests.
[20:28] <DDevine> jpalmer: Thanks, and that also should fill my "getting my hands dirty" requirement.
[20:29] <jpalmer> Si.
[20:30] <DDevine> OK notes have been taken. Pre-flight check before moving DNS hosting.
[20:37] <DDevine> Also stumbled upon a nice document about DNS. http://www.zytrax.com/books/dns/ch4/
[20:39] <DDevine> Bah I don't think I can sit down properly until I do some exercise... BBL.
