ahh - figured it out
something in the upgrade was having spamassassin create *huge* files
my disk was nearly full
and even after deleting and restarting the services, I still got huge files
so I chowned the directory to root.. that'll teach spamassin :)
I guess that's one way to kill spam -- kill your server.
RandalSchwartz: I used spamassassin for a while.  it worked "ok"   then I tried dspam,  and never looked back.
obviously,  this doesn't help you *now*  but I'd say it's worth investigating when you get time.
