ww: fyi just building some indexes on database... really hope the automatic "kill processes eating cpu" job doesn't kill my database...
RandalSchwartz: why do you have a automatic process like that?
***: sunil__ has joined #arpnetworks
ww: RandalSchwartz: i don't but i have heard about arp killing processes on occasion
wasn't sure if pegging the cpu for 15 minutes or so would trigger it (it didn't)
RandalSchwartz: ahh, they probably use their root login to do that
which means it won't work on my VPS
first thing I do is rewrite my disk :)
ww: mine neither :P
RandalSchwartz: so the most they could force for you or me is a full system reboot

tooth: also check the hash of the disk image before install. :-)
RandalSchwartz: tooth?
wrong window?
tooth: re: rewrite disk commentary
RandalSchwartz: Ahh, as in distrust the image Garry gives me? Never. :)
tooth: Don't forget to upload your own /bin/cksum that you've already verified. ;-)
toddf: I've never heard of the automatic "kill process eating cpu" job on arp default images
RandalSchwartz: until now, that is. :)
ww: toddf: i was sure there was some sort of chatter about that in here a month or two ago...
no matter
toddf: hehe. I'd be surprised if it existed, since cpu is not over-allocated either. I've done 'make -j10' and other ways to utilize lots of cpu on a 1cpu vps and nothing ever came of it
not that I did that on a default image mind you
jpalmer: linux has a process to kill processes that it things are leaking memory. but thats not an "arp" thing. I've never heard of arp killing random processes within your vps. because frankly.. no matter how stupid your process gets, it's confined to the resources allocated to your vps.
tooth: ALso defeats the purpose of having your own VPS
RandalSchwartz: make -j10 isn't much better than make -j2 if you have only one CPU
ww: toddf: i would tend to agree
-: ww must be misremembering
jpalmer: I'm inclined to agree. I'd be shocked if it were true.
RandalSchwartz: shocked *shocked* at all the gambling going on!

dferris: just want to say how pleased I am with my VPS.
RandalSchwartz: me too
dferris: allowing the customer to reinstall from scratch is a nice touch
and zfs root is also really nice :D
RandalSchwartz: indeed
I have four VPS all zfs as / based
dferris: if I had more money I would buy at least 1 more
oh well
kids come first
amdprophet: we moved away from ZFS on one of our VPS, we started to get crashing
dferris: how much memory did you have?
amdprophet: not enough :p
dferris: lol
amdprophet: 1gb
dferris: that's what I have, so maybe I am doomed
mjp: i dont get why people are using zfs on a virtualised platfrom with such a small amount of disk/memory available...
amdprophet: as long as you're not doing any heavy processing you should be fine
mjp, we used it for snapshots
mjp: ufs does snapshots too
dferris: yeah but they are so slow
mjp: and wont be as unavle as zfs
*unstable
ziyourenxiang: that's quite a typo. :-)
amdprophet: hah
dferris: I don't do a huge amount of IO
otoh my server at home was never stable until it got 8 GB of ram
RandalSchwartz: zfs snapshots rock
amdprophet: my ZFS box here is completely stable with 4 GB
mjp: stable servers rock
