toothhah. neato
although, I just use the Esc/# method

bharatakah - esc # is great [10:42]
guess i should read the man page one day [10:48]
tooththat, and you only need to tap it
alt+# may also work if your terminal is setup that way. IIRC it's default with putty like that
[10:48]
bharatakah, thanks for the tips [10:53]

vcsbleh, went to fix my grandmas email this weekend, upgraded her completely vanilla ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and it borked her whole system :X
so much for LTS being stable
[12:51]
***plett has joined #arpnetworks [12:52]
toddflinux upgrades == recpie for disaster, it's totally encouraging people to 'setup a system, if it works, leave it alone, if upgrading setup a new system, repeat' [12:56]
vcswell [12:56]
mike-burnsYeah, Linux is frightening to upgrade. [12:56]
vcsproblem was that the version of evolution loaded had issues with gmail
so i thought, ill just upgrade it
and my problems will be over
[12:57]
mike-burnsIt's all because they don't have a base system. [12:57]
vcs"hey its just LTS to LTS", this should be supported [12:57]
mike-burnsNot sure why; nothing about the kernel prevents a distro from having a base system. [12:57]
vcsboy was i wrong
I hate on CentOS alot
but hey, at least it can upgrade right
[12:57]
toddffriends of mine and I attempted LSD ages ago. Linux with BSD userland .. we gave up. [12:58]
vcsmike-burns: they dont have a base system as in they dont have anything that is not a package? [12:58]
toddfvcs: right [12:58]
vcsLOL toddf :P [12:58]
RandalSchwartzat least it'd be ACID-compliant :) [12:59]
vcs:P [12:59]
mike-burnstoddf: I attempted it a few months ago too; gave up quickly 'cause I didn't know enough about Linux. Will try again someday. [12:59]
RandalSchwartzdo the BSD system-related tools even know enough to talk to Linux?
I'd think things like ps would be utterly broken
[12:59]
vcsisn't there a version of debian that uses the FreeBSD kernel
and debian userland
of course, GNU / apt etc
[12:59]
toddfmike-burns: the problem lies in the fact that bsd userland is tied closely to the bsd kernels. tie'ing it to the linux kernel means different sets of signal handlers, different system call conventions, all forms of things different including but not limited to some calls in the kerenl in linux vs userland in bsd and vica versa in libc [13:00]
plettvcs: Yes, Debian kFreeBSD [13:00]
mike-burnsThe kernel isn't what I want; I actually want the Linux kernel for e.g. my laptop. [13:00]
vcsyeah
i need to find a distro that just works that i never have to ugprade for grandma
hehe
that email client evolution constantly is breaking doing crazy stuff
i thought ubuntu would be good :X
[13:00]
toddfseems evolution is flaky on any os .. ;-) [13:03]
mike-burnsI've had very poor success with Ubuntu. On Debian on my laptop right now. [13:03]
vcsyeah i noticed [13:03]
mike-burnsAnd yeah, I use mutt.
Get your grandma using mutt!
[13:03]
vcstoddf the problem is teaching her a new client, even the gmail web client
it took me 2 days to teach her evolution
lol
[13:04]
mike-burnsShe'll love writing procmail receipes. [13:04]
vcshahahaha
i guess at this point
i just need a stable email client that looks like evolution
[13:05]
mike-burnsThunderbird?
I had someone running Balsa for a while, she seemed to like it.
[13:05]
vcsyeah, i think i will setup debian stable, gnome and thunderbird
that sounds like it couldn't give me that many problems :X
o wow, thunderbird 3.1 looks super easy to use
grandma proof :)
[13:06]
mike-burnsYou'll find that they don't like the BSD 4-clause license on Debian.
And you'll also find it used by a surprising number of libs.
[13:08]
vcsbleh
maybe ill set her up on CentOS then :P
