bharatak: if you do want that automagically taken care of for you, see http://todd.fries.net/pub/lose.pl tooth: hah. neato
although, I just use the Esc/# method zxvf: i like irssi bharatak: ah - esc # is great
guess i should read the man page one day tooth: that, and you only need to tap it
alt+# may also work if your terminal is setup that way. IIRC it's default with putty like that bharatak: ah, thanks for the tips ***: Ehtyar has quit IRC (Quit: Nice Scotty, now beam my clothes up too!)

nbari|away is now known as nbari vcs: bleh, went to fix my grandmas email this weekend, upgraded her completely vanilla ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and it borked her whole system :X
so much for LTS being stable ***: plett has joined #arpnetworks toddf: linux upgrades == recpie for disaster, it's totally encouraging people to 'setup a system, if it works, leave it alone, if upgrading setup a new system, repeat' vcs: well mike-burns: Yeah, Linux is frightening to upgrade. vcs: problem was that the version of evolution loaded had issues with gmail
so i thought, ill just upgrade it
and my problems will be over mike-burns: It's all because they don't have a base system. vcs: "hey its just LTS to LTS", this should be supported mike-burns: Not sure why; nothing about the kernel prevents a distro from having a base system. vcs: boy was i wrong
I hate on CentOS alot
but hey, at least it can upgrade right toddf: friends of mine and I attempted LSD ages ago. Linux with BSD userland .. we gave up. vcs: mike-burns: they dont have a base system as in they dont have anything that is not a package? toddf: vcs: right vcs: LOL toddf :P RandalSchwartz: at least it'd be ACID-compliant :) vcs: :P mike-burns: toddf: I attempted it a few months ago too; gave up quickly 'cause I didn't know enough about Linux. Will try again someday. RandalSchwartz: do the BSD system-related tools even know enough to talk to Linux?
I'd think things like ps would be utterly broken vcs: isn't there a version of debian that uses the FreeBSD kernel
and debian userland
of course, GNU / apt etc toddf: mike-burns: the problem lies in the fact that bsd userland is tied closely to the bsd kernels. tie'ing it to the linux kernel means different sets of signal handlers, different system call conventions, all forms of things different including but not limited to some calls in the kerenl in linux vs userland in bsd and vica versa in libc plett: vcs: Yes, Debian kFreeBSD mike-burns: The kernel isn't what I want; I actually want the Linux kernel for e.g. my laptop. vcs: yeah
i need to find a distro that just works that i never have to ugprade for grandma
hehe
that email client evolution constantly is breaking doing crazy stuff
i thought ubuntu would be good :X toddf: seems evolution is flaky on any os .. ;-) mike-burns: I've had very poor success with Ubuntu. On Debian on my laptop right now. vcs: yeah i noticed mike-burns: And yeah, I use mutt.
Get your grandma using mutt! vcs: toddf the problem is teaching her a new client, even the gmail web client
it took me 2 days to teach her evolution
lol mike-burns: She'll love writing procmail receipes. vcs: hahahaha
i guess at this point
i just need a stable email client that looks like evolution mike-burns: Thunderbird?
I had someone running Balsa for a while, she seemed to like it. vcs: yeah, i think i will setup debian stable, gnome and thunderbird
that sounds like it couldn't give me that many problems :X
o wow, thunderbird 3.1 looks super easy to use
grandma proof :) mike-burns: You'll find that they don't like the BSD 4-clause license on Debian.
And you'll also find it used by a surprising number of libs. vcs: bleh
maybe ill set her up on CentOS then :P ***: schmir has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
