bleh, went to fix my grandmas email this weekend, upgraded her completely vanilla ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and it borked her whole system :X
so much for LTS being stable
linux upgrades == recpie for disaster, it's totally encouraging people to 'setup a system, if it works, leave it alone, if upgrading setup a new system, repeat'

so i thought, ill just upgrade it
and my problems will be over
It's all because they don't have a base system.

Not sure why; nothing about the kernel prevents a distro from having a base system.

friends of mine and I attempted LSD ages ago. Linux with BSD userland .. we gave up.

I'd think things like ps would be utterly broken
isn't there a version of debian that uses the FreeBSD kernel
and debian userland
of course, GNU / apt etc
mike-burns: the problem lies in the fact that bsd userland is tied closely to the bsd kernels. tie'ing it to the linux kernel means different sets of signal handlers, different system call conventions, all forms of things different including but not limited to some calls in the kerenl in linux vs userland in bsd and vica versa in libc

I had someone running Balsa for a while, she seemed to like it.

You'll find that they don't like the BSD 4-clause license on Debian.
And you'll also find it used by a surprising number of libs.
