LT has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving) -: dferris_ is stoked to get his new VPS up and running RandalSchwartz: dferris_... what did you get, and what are you putting on it? dferris_: It's the 1 GB of memory one
and it's going to have FreeBSD 8.1
right now I have a VPS with RootBSD that is the same price with 512 MB of memory
seemed like a no brainer to me RandalSchwartz: zfs for root? dferris_: I haven't decided yet RandalSchwartz: I'm really liking that.
have it that way on four VPS at Arp dferris_: I should RandalSchwartz: and I have lots of snapshots :) dferris_: :) RandalSchwartz: every 10 minutes for 3 hours. every half hour for 3 days. every day for 3 months.
etc jdoe: RandalSchwartz: I'm sure I've asked before, but did you have to do any zfs-related tuning? RandalSchwartz: I haven't yet. dferris_: zfs is easy to tune RandalSchwartz: I just used all the defaults
"you can tune a filesystem, but you can't tuna fish" :)
from "man tunefs"
that joke has been in there since 4.2bsd :) dferris_: plus I run a bunch of FreeBSD KVM VMs for work
I think it qemu's emulation is bette than Xen's up_the_irons: azmarco: well now, isn't that just a tunnel? No way it could really be two hops ;)
KVM virtualization is way better than Xen
I converted all my Xen boxes to KVM earlier this year vcs: xens HVM support is abysmal
if you are not using the hypvervisor, xen is basically worthless up_the_irons: yup toddf: xen bridged the gap between cpus incapable of KVM and cpus capable of KVM, at the price of os kernel / driver invasion. KVM has no such price, and cpus supporting KVM are easy to come by these days. game over, bye xen. ***: nesta has quit IRC (Quit: leaving)
nesta has joined #arpnetworks toddf: if only something other than linux had kvm support *grin*
but hey, it works well enough that there are happy people and a nice arpnetworks to take advantage of the kvm niceness ***: heavysixer has joined #arpnetworks
ChanServ sets mode: +o heavysixer vcs: yep toddf RandalSchwartz: my traceroute from my desk to this machine... 9 hops, but 1.7 ms :) vcs: nice RandalSchwartz: I believe the fourth hop is via a 5-block-long dark fiber that connects us to our cage at one wilshire
and from there, through xeex.net and misdivision.com to wilshire annex vcs: average of 70ms for me
and im down in texas
hehe RandalSchwartz: I was trying to download http://arpnetworks.com/100mb.bin, and it stalled after 50MB
something wrong with arp's nets?

mattx86 has joined #arpnetworks azmarco: up_the_irons: ipsec tunnel indeed. but, 2 hops from GA beats almost everyone i imagine =) RandalSchwartz: virtual hops != physical hops
at work, I'm only 7 physical hops
my vpn would make me one virtual hop, which is pointless ***: vapor has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 260 seconds) jdoe: but, but 1 < 7! azmarco: oh, i know they're not the same ***: vapor has joined #arpnetworks azmarco: but i am still just 2 hops =)
now ... if i redo that tunnel to go over ipv6, i'll go from about 24 hops to 2 hops dferris_: so speaking of KVM, what version of qemu does it take to get FreeBSD to do an acpi shutdown? vapor: media center is awesome for dvd and bluray
it plays em automatically
shows you the info on the movie
pretty cool
very good quality

but I thought they weren't running qemu dferris: KVM is kvm drivers + qemu for the emulation
