up_the_ironsww: no local ntp servers, sorry [13:28]
..... (idle for 20mn)
wwup_the_irons: ok, thanks...
for future reference, these are probably good choices for the us west coast:
server usno.pa-x.dec.com iburst maxpoll 9
server clock.isc.org iburst maxpoll 9
server tick.usnogps.navy.mil iburst maxpoll 9
server tock.usnogps.navy.mil iburst maxpoll 9
[13:48]
jpalmerww: or you could use the 'pool.ntp.org" public NTP servers [13:50]
***schmir has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 265 seconds) [13:50]
wwjpalmer: they're scattered all over... generally want low jitter and predictable latency for a good clock
splitting hairs though...
[13:51]
jpalmerww: ntp accounts for latency and jitter by using multiple samples. [13:52]
tinonoww: clock.fmt.he.net, clock.sjc.he.net are pretty good for us too. Bonus points to the fmt one for being ipv6 :-p [13:53]
wwtinono: funny, ntpdate uses the v4 address...
oh have to give it -6
also timekeeper.isi.edu is good... anyhow, plenty of ntp servers now... thanks
jpalmer: yes, but the less estimating ntp has to do the better
[13:55]
jpalmerww: as long as all of those servers you are using don't require letting the host operator know (or, if you have let them know) it should be fine. for all intents and purposes though, the pool.ntp.org timeservers were created specifically due to this. If you need to be super accurate, I guess it makes sense to use stratum 2 timeservers. [14:00]
wwup_the_irons: any chance of getting the rdns sorted today? [14:02]
up_the_ironsww: yeah, i'll clear all tickets before the end of the day [14:02]

jpalmerjpalmer logs in and creates a bunch of bogus tickets so up_the_irons feels like he accomplished WAY more work today :P [14:08]
tinonoup_the_irons: I was wondering if kvm instances can be modified on request. Say I'd like an ne2k_pci nic instead of the e1000 one, is that something you can do easily? [14:10]
.... (idle for 19mn)
dxtrtinono: What difference would ne2k_pci make vs. e1000? [14:29]
tinonoit would work with netbsd. (and still work everywhere else supposedly) [14:29]
up_the_ironsjpalmer: lol
tinono: yes, i can do that for you
[14:29]

up_the_ironsRandalSchwartz: what ticket from oct 2? I don't see any older than 24 hours at this point [14:58]
RandalSchwartzabout putting 8.1 in all my trays
or maybe you did it but didn't let me know. :)
[14:58]
up_the_ironsRandalSchwartz: i did it, and replied. maybe Tender lost the emails, bah [15:04]
RandalSchwartzoof
Yeah, I didn't see a reply
so apparently, you can do that without messing up the live VM. :)
Hmm. had I known, I would have done the 8.1 ugrade last weekend... I guess I'll get to try it this week instead.
in any event, thanks. now the work is on my plate again.
70 minutes until takeoff
40 more here in the sky club
[15:10]
up_the_ironsRandalSchwartz: for the change to take effect, you just need to completely shutdown the VM (halt -p), then boot it from Portal or SSH console [15:17]
RandalSchwartzok [15:17]
jpalmerRandalSchwartz: where ya going? [15:17]
RandalSchwartzback towards my home, at least for another week. :)

[15:17]
jpalmerthe last time I flew out of LAX, I was taking a red-eye that was oversold. they put me up in a hotel, and got me on a plane the next morning. I was in no hurry, so I volunteered. [15:18]

Daily
[16:17]
tinonoyeah, many people do [16:17]
dxtrDo you know what sucks with snow? [16:17]
tinonotell me [16:17]
dxtrYou get lots of it during the winter, "YAY!"
But then it gets dirty so you get black snow all over the roads and stuff
And then what happens? It melts
[16:17]
tinonooh yeah [16:18]
dxtrAnd when it melts it isn't dry
Making this wet.. Something

everyone is on arp
its annoying
[22:26]

spitsespecially when it goes down like today [22:27]

vcsyeah lol true [22:27]
spitsif not for me

[22:27]
vcseveryon is with arp because arp is ahead of the game (ipv6)
lol
[22:27]
spitsyeah but
its been really unstable the last couple months
[22:27]
vcsthis is the first problem i have had
but ive only been with em less than a month
linode only gives 2 ips :(
not much to work with
[22:28]
spitslol
eah
yeah
[22:29]
vcsi have a /24 subnet for ipv4, but i use it mainly for work
irc and work dont mix
[22:29]
spitslol [22:30]
vcstraceroute6 to ipv6.l.google.com (2001:4860:8011::68) from 2607:f2f8:a5c0::13, 64 hops max, 12 byte packets
1 2607:f2f8:a5e0::1 0.533 ms 0.48 ms 0.498 ms
2 2607:f2f8:a5e0::1 0.601 ms !N 0.528 ms !N 0.527 ms !N
spits if we got some people together we could get a dedicated
but i dont know if that would be big enough for everyone
also not everyone trusts eachother
[22:30]
spitsyeah
i like paying 10 bux
a month
for a vps
lol
[22:33]
vcsim paying 30, but i may move off of linode completely
not sure yet
depends if a couple people decide to throw me money for hosting
[22:34]
spitswell
are you using arp for work?
[22:35]
vcsnope
irc, and probobly some web hosting
if i ever move off of linode that is :X
i dont want to pay the 20$ extra a month
[22:35]
spitsdo you know the command to remove an ip off ifconfig [22:37]
vcson OpenBSD, it would be ifconfig <interface> -inet6 Ipaddress [22:37]
spitso ya [22:37]
vcsor -inet for ipv4 [22:37]
spitsthanks [22:37]
***Tadaka has quit IRC (Quit: Computer has gone to sleep) [22:38]

i could get some dank sushi for 20$ extra a month
lol
[22:38]
spitslol
linode is better man but whatever
[22:39]
vcsits stable yeah and priced well
but feature wise its lacking
[22:39]
spitseveryone and their mother has arp and it goes down cuz of ddos and shit [22:39]
vcswell, i dont know of any better solution besides dedicated servers
maybe I will collocate a box in a few months, I dunno
[22:40]
spitsfind another vps provider then [22:40]
vcsproblem is spits getting ipv6
with collocation, its harder
not that ipv4 addresses are really expensive, but its becoming a pain to get a good number
[22:41]
spitsare you on efnet? [22:41]
vcsnot atm [22:41]
spitsjoin #ossim and inquire how much a vps from them would be
its freebsd
[22:41]

spitswell cmon man
you want it for irc
but u wanna use openbsd
openbsd isnt really friendly
for irc
[22:42]
vcsfor the users its fine
how is it not friendly for irc
its extremely hard to hack
[22:42]
spitsyeah isnt it hard to login
i've never used openbsd
[22:43]
vcsand its extremely stable, with a ports tree and package manager [22:43]
spitsi dont know anyone that runs openbsd [22:43]
vcsits not hard to use at all [22:43]
spitsand i've been on efnet for like 15 years
i've literally never known anyone to use it
[22:43]
vcsi have never met someone who ran OpenBSD and has been hacked [22:43]

its a great stable, easily configurabl OS
and extremely scure
and no one offers it besides Arp really
