up_the_irons: ww: no local ntp servers, sorry
ww: up_the_irons: ok, thanks...
for future reference, these are probably good choices for the us west coast:
server usno.pa-x.dec.com iburst maxpoll 9
server clock.isc.org iburst maxpoll 9
server tick.usnogps.navy.mil iburst maxpoll 9
server tock.usnogps.navy.mil iburst maxpoll 9
jpalmer: ww: or you could use the 'pool.ntp.org" public NTP servers
***: schmir has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
ww: jpalmer: they're scattered all over... generally want low jitter and predictable latency for a good clock
splitting hairs though...
jpalmer: ww: ntp accounts for latency and jitter by using multiple samples.
tinono: ww: clock.fmt.he.net, clock.sjc.he.net are pretty good for us too. Bonus points to the fmt one for being ipv6 :-p
ww: tinono: funny, ntpdate uses the v4 address...
oh have to give it -6
also timekeeper.isi.edu is good... anyhow, plenty of ntp servers now... thanks
jpalmer: yes, but the less estimating ntp has to do the better
jpalmer: ww: as long as all of those servers you are using don't require letting the host operator know (or, if you have let them know) it should be fine. for all intents and purposes though, the pool.ntp.org timeservers were created specifically due to this. If you need to be super accurate, I guess it makes sense to use stratum 2 timeservers.
ww: up_the_irons: any chance of getting the rdns sorted today?
up_the_irons: ww: yeah, i'll clear all tickets before the end of the day
ww: brilliant! thanks

-: jpalmer logs in and creates a bunch of bogus tickets so up_the_irons feels like he accomplished WAY more work today :P
tinono: up_the_irons: I was wondering if kvm instances can be modified on request. Say I'd like an ne2k_pci nic instead of the e1000 one, is that something you can do easily?
dxtr: tinono: What difference would ne2k_pci make vs. e1000?
tinono: it would work with netbsd. (and still work everywhere else supposedly)
up_the_irons: jpalmer: lol
tinono: yes, i can do that for you
tinono: ahh! support tickets on their way :-p
-: RandalSchwartz wonders if his ticket from oct 2 will ever get done <nudge>
up_the_irons: RandalSchwartz: what ticket from oct 2? I don't see any older than 24 hours at this point
RandalSchwartz: about putting 8.1 in all my trays
or maybe you did it but didn't let me know. :)
up_the_irons: RandalSchwartz: i did it, and replied. maybe Tender lost the emails, bah
RandalSchwartz: oof
Yeah, I didn't see a reply
so apparently, you can do that without messing up the live VM. :)
Hmm. had I known, I would have done the 8.1 ugrade last weekend... I guess I'll get to try it this week instead.
in any event, thanks. now the work is on my plate again.
70 minutes until takeoff
40 more here in the sky club
up_the_irons: RandalSchwartz: for the change to take effect, you just need to completely shutdown the VM (halt -p), then boot it from Portal or SSH console
RandalSchwartz: ok
jpalmer: RandalSchwartz: where ya going?
RandalSchwartz: back towards my home, at least for another week. :)
this is my last trip "home" though, because I'll become homeless during the next trip
my stuff is being sold off, most of the precious bits are now in a 10x15 storage
jpalmer: the last time I flew out of LAX, I was taking a red-eye that was oversold. they put me up in a hotel, and got me on a plane the next morning. I was in no hurry, so I volunteered.
RandalSchwartz: I'm out of SAN towards SLC then PDX
spent the weekend down here after the two weeks of work in LA
jpalmer: the company i work for sends me to LA occasionally for cedars-sinai and huntington memorial
RandalSchwartz: drank a big pile of tequila at the annual Tijuana Tequila Fest
and believe me... piling up tequila is hard. :)
jpalmer: he
heh
damn, my 16 channel DVR (surveilance system) just died. it doesn't power the HD's now.
dxtr: Hmm... It's cold
1C
And I'm taking the bike to work in a couple of hours. Hooray!
tinono: 33C here... and it's 7.15PM!!!!!
i wish i were where you are
dxtr: Haha
I'm king of longing for snow right now
For some reason
GIEF SNOW
tinono: I was 21 when I got to see and feel snow for the first time
after years of seeing it on tv
I wasn't disapointed :-p
dxtr: Oh lawd
I see and feel snow a couple of months every year
Daily
tinono: yeah, many people do
dxtr: Do you know what sucks with snow?
tinono: tell me
dxtr: You get lots of it during the winter, "YAY!"
But then it gets dirty so you get black snow all over the roads and stuff
And then what happens? It melts
tinono: oh yeah
dxtr: And when it melts it isn't dry
Making this wet.. Something
tinono: :)
dxtr: Can't even walk without having your feet soaked :P
tinono: the closest we ever got to snow here was this particular day, we all woke up to a stunning 17C
dxtr: But as long as it stays under 0C it's cool
tinono: the country stopped. schools remained closed
dxtr: What?
tinono: people were going crazy
dxtr: ... for 17C?
tinono: yeah
dxtr: they realize people freeze to death in some parts of the world?
tinono: that's like 10C less than the worst we ever knew
dxtr: Thing is 17C isn't even cold
tinono: to be honnest, there was crazy fog all over the island at that point
dxtr: Where do you live?
Africa?
tinono: no
in Martinique
Caribbean
dxtr: Oh
tinono: when it's 24, we close everything and wear sweatshirts
how crazy is that...
dxtr: Haha
When it's 24 we open everything and do anything to cool down
Our consumption of liquids rise to the sky
tinono: now that I've lived in colder countries for a while
I find this place strange. I see my sister wearing huge clothing, while I'm remaining topless.
dxtr: Haha
tinono: it's 28C for christ's sake!
you know...
dxtr: Hehe
Take her to Scandinavia

OpenBSD
spits: oh
you have more then one
spoiled=
;x
vcs: i have a lunix box in linode that i do web hosting with only now
OpenBSD is mainly IRC
spits: you gave me a shell on your linode box
tho
vcs: yeah
im about to move everyone to OpenBSD
spits: dont man
i dont want another arp box
vcs: lol
spits: i have like 10 already
everyone is on arp
its annoying
vcs: linux is too insecure to be giving my friends shells
spits: especially when it goes down like today
vcs: lol
spits: yeah but
i run 2 wraith bots man
its not like i even access it
vcs: yeah lol true
spits: if not for me
do it for the bots
!!
vcs: everyon is with arp because arp is ahead of the game (ipv6)
lol
spits: yeah but
its been really unstable the last couple months
vcs: this is the first problem i have had
but ive only been with em less than a month
linode only gives 2 ips :(
not much to work with
spits: lol
eah
yeah
vcs: i have a /24 subnet for ipv4, but i use it mainly for work
irc and work dont mix
spits: lol
vcs: traceroute6 to ipv6.l.google.com (2001:4860:8011::68) from 2607:f2f8:a5c0::13, 64 hops max, 12 byte packets

2 2607:f2f8:a5e0::1 0.601 ms !N 0.528 ms !N 0.527 ms !N
spits if we got some people together we could get a dedicated
but i dont know if that would be big enough for everyone
also not everyone trusts eachother
spits: yeah
i like paying 10 bux
a month
for a vps
lol
vcs: im paying 30, but i may move off of linode completely
not sure yet
depends if a couple people decide to throw me money for hosting
spits: well
are you using arp for work?
vcs: nope
irc, and probobly some web hosting
if i ever move off of linode that is :X
i dont want to pay the 20$ extra a month
spits: do you know the command to remove an ip off ifconfig
vcs: on OpenBSD, it would be ifconfig <interface> -inet6 Ipaddress
spits: o ya
vcs: or -inet for ipv4
spits: thanks
***: Tadaka has quit IRC (Quit: Computer has gone to sleep)
vcs: well that does it, i think i will move off of linode
i could get some dank sushi for 20$ extra a month
lol
spits: lol
linode is better man but whatever
vcs: its stable yeah and priced well
but feature wise its lacking
spits: everyone and their mother has arp and it goes down cuz of ddos and shit
vcs: well, i dont know of any better solution besides dedicated servers
maybe I will collocate a box in a few months, I dunno
spits: find another vps provider then
vcs: problem is spits getting ipv6
with collocation, its harder
not that ipv4 addresses are really expensive, but its becoming a pain to get a good number
spits: are you on efnet?
vcs: not atm
spits: join #ossim and inquire how much a vps from them would be
its freebsd
vcs: heh, im to paranoid to run FreeBSD
spits: well cmon man
you want it for irc
but u wanna use openbsd
openbsd isnt really friendly
for irc
vcs: for the users its fine
how is it not friendly for irc
its extremely hard to hack
spits: yeah isnt it hard to login
i've never used openbsd
vcs: and its extremely stable, with a ports tree and package manager
spits: i dont know anyone that runs openbsd
vcs: its not hard to use at all
spits: and i've been on efnet for like 15 years
i've literally never known anyone to use it
vcs: i have never met someone who ran OpenBSD and has been hacked
spits: that has to mean something
vcs: my point
lol OpenBSD is not rocket science man
its a great stable, easily configurabl OS
and extremely scure
and no one offers it besides Arp really
spits: im so pissed
fuck
can't irc
no ipv6
vcs: lol
there is this thing called ipv4
it works
spits: i have ipv4 blocked
vcs: o
how do you connect?
spits: ipv6
newb
vcs: you have ipv6 at home?
spits: ipv4 is blocked from irc
omg
you r teh newb
vcs: lol
spits: ;P
isetup a tunnel with tunnelbroker
vcs: i can get ipv6 i think
spits: but it wont get on irc either
