LucasWilcox has joined #arpnetworks up_the_irons: mhoran: yeah, just use Jaunty and my PPA. that's exactly what I use Tadaka: quick question about firewalls. firewalling of my vps depends on my config of iptables? I am assuming that there's not a base network firewall controlling access to these boxes. RandalSchwartz: none that I'm aware of
you just have the raw internet coming at you up_the_irons: Tadaka: correct, there is not, with one exception: ssh SYN packets are rate-limited to 10 per IP per minute, to thwart dictionary attacks across all VMs Tadaka: ok, that's pretty much what I figured. Good to know about the SSH throttle.
thanks RandalSchwartz: I just added my own in the boxes I care about
that and move ssh off 22 up_the_irons: np Tadaka: RandalSchwartz: yea, I'm just getting my first box setup, so I wanted to verify the lay of the land before I started messing around too much -: RandalSchwartz thinks of a few celebrities to tag with the title "lay of the land" ) Tadaka: ROFL ***: tuvwx_ has joined #arpnetworks

My download rates through rr are slow from my vps. I'm wondering whether anyone else has noticed this. vcs: what is your speed with RR
how are you downloading from your VPS? jazz57: I'm only getting around 300 k Bytes down (maybe 2500 Mb/s). vcs: 300kbtes 2.4 mbits jazz57: Sorry. I meant to say kb/s. vcs: ahhh
yeah that is really slow
how are you testing download rates? is it across all services? jazz57: Mainly http but I also tried an SCP download. It's pretty consistent.
Try this: http://174.136.107.210/100mb.bin
I'm wondering whether they're using some kind of throttling. vcs: ok, one second
im getting 1mbyte a second
down jazz57: Is that from your vps or offsite? vcs: offsite
Comcast business
in texas jazz57: That's good. I'm getting the same from my Irvine vps so the problem must be with rr. vcs: hmmm yeah
do a traceroute to your vps
from RR
see if it looks like there is some sort of routing problem jazz57: Here's what's weird. Speed is fine to the arp test file. vcs: if there is packet loss, you should be able to see it
hmmm
what OS are you runing jazz57: FreeBSD vcs: not that it really matters, just curious
jazz57: try a traceroute
and compare the arp example ip to yours jazz57: Same route.
The only difference is the final ip addresss. vcs: any wacky firewall settings? jazz57: I tried it with firewall off, but I don't see why I would get good rates from one ISP but not the other. vcs: true
try doing a traceroute from your VPS to your home connection jazz57: It's a head scratcher.
Let me try that. ***: sentabi has quit IRC (Read error: Connection timed out)
sentabi has joined #arpnetworks jazz57: Nothing unusual about the trace. vcs: hmmmm jazz57: If anyone is on the roadrunner net, I'd be interested to hear if you've benched your downloads.
I get good speed from my other vps, which has worse pings. vcs: notice any packet loss
or anything like that jazz57: Nope.
It's the same network as the arp server. vcs: email arp support about it
or if up_the_irons is around
he can help jazz57: It's like something is looking at the ip address and saying this one should be throttled. vcs: sounds odd

up_the_irons: You happen to be around ? -: wraithan may have hosed his machine... :( jpalmer: wraithan: you can fix it via serial console or vnc wraithan: jpalmer: unfortunately it is to the point that all I get is a ramfs... where I can't mount my drive that is busted jpalmer: if you login to portal.arpnetworks.com, and click on your VPS info, there should be info there about how to connect with vnc wraithan: I am in with vnc jpalmer: wraithan: did you do a full powerdown, and boot? wraithan: does no good if the tools there wont help
...
So, I am not new to using VPSs or linux jpalmer: ok, cool. did you powerdown and boot, then boot from your cd into a recovery console? wraithan: What happened was I forgot to rebuild the init stuff after changing mkinitcpio.conf which means I don't have the virtio modules loaded like I need to access my drive
The CD appears to not be there anymore
which is where I am running into the problems jpalmer: oh. hmm. interesting I recently had something similar happen. mind my asking which host you are on? wraithan: Which is why I needed to talk to up_the_irons to fix that problem for me
kvr09.arpnetworks.com
is my vnc url. I don't see any other way of checking what one I am on jpalmer: kvr09. gotcha. was curious if you were on the same one I am. wraithan: I lied, the CD is there... I must have hit 2 instead of 3 -: wraithan whistles and goes to fixing his vps jpalmer: hehe cool. let us know how it pans out. wraithan: and I'm in
