mattx86 has joined #arpnetworks up_the_irons: mattx86: have you been having problems with your VM? I noticed it stopped and then restarted (did u do that?) mattx86: up_the_irons: hm.. not sure. I did boot it up once or twice after the issues on kvr13 the other day, but I shut it down shortly after
I may have booted it up since, but can't remember for sure
I've got another project in mind for the vps; I just haven't started on it yet up_the_irons: mattx86: I noticed it was down, at least according to libvirtd and also nagios, but then it had started itself (about 20 minutes ago). I thought that you may have hit the "Boot" button mattx86: up_the_irons: that's peculiar o_O
up_the_irons: yeah, uptime: 17min2s
wasn't me tho up_the_irons: mattx86: I hate to say it, but I may not be able to support RouterOS for you. The host, currently, is experiencing a soft cpu lockup, and I suspect it may be due to RouterOS
i don't see anything else different between this host and others; and this host is the only one that is having problems mattx86: true, and that's fine, but, I don't think I've booted it on purpose since maybe the 1st
that's what's weird about it.. why would it just decide to boot up?
unless maybe it never got shutdown properly last time
and went crazy or something up_the_irons: mattx86: yeah i have no idea
it's quite odd, never seen this behavior before mattx86: hm.. let me figure out what ISO I want and we can reinstall it right quick up_the_irons: mattx86: ok, i'm going to need to reboot the host in the meantime; bb in 5 mins mattx86: ok
up_the_irons: ok, here's the ISO I want: http://www.alpinelinux.org/cgi-bin/dl.cgi/v2.0/releases/alpine-2.0.2-x86.iso
append .sha1 for the sha1sum up_the_irons: mattx86: is there anything on your current vps you need? I'd like to wipe the disk so it doesn't boot up RouterOS anymore mattx86: up_the_irons: haha :P nah, but I was going to do that too :)
that's fine
go ahead and wipe it even up_the_irons: mattx86: ok, tnx mattx86: I'd be interested to see if that does indeed fix it. I'd expect better from mikrotik.. well, sort of.
although, I did find a bug in their software that causes it to either crash or go into a continuous loop
in any case, its a good thing I didn't purchase a license, and remained on the 24-hour trial up_the_irons: yeah
mattx86: OK, ISO is inserted and VM is booting up (it'll probably hang trying to boot a blank disk, so install something :) mattx86: :P
thanks up_the_irons :)
ugh, vinagre.. apparently its not a stable vnc app up_the_irons: mattx86: np
mattx86: i use xtightvncviewer
it's primitive, but gets the job done mattx86: I'll give it a try
thanks for the tip up_the_irons: np mattx86: up_the_irons: btw, I still have IDE mode for my vps right?
the ISO boots but doesn't detect the boot media heh up_the_irons: mattx86: let me check mattx86: I'm thinking it could just be an error on alpine's part up_the_irons: mattx86: yes, it is IDE mattx86: welp, I'll test the ISO locally and go from there
who knows
;) up_the_irons: ok :)
OK, time for bed...
cd $sleep mattx86: I should do the same, doh ***: Hien has joined #arpnetworks mattx86: up_the_irons: btw, I got it; the ISO issue seems to be a minor flaw, essentially in how it 'detects' what device the /dev/cdrom symlink should point to (in this case, it automatically selected sr1 - the second/empty cd-rom on the vps) dxtr: up_the_irons o ***: mattx86 has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving) Hien: go to bed ..now..good bye anyone..see soon. ***: Hien has left

hey up u know any nice/cheap vps in .eu? jpalmer: hola up_the_irons. Feeling better? up_the_irons: nuke`: no idea
jpalmer: yes, i am :) thanks for asking jpalmer: up_the_irons: gooed to hear. I'll take my mask off now and put the lysol away up_the_irons: lol jpalmer: so, the fact that you've ordered more hardware.. offers the impression that ARP is becoming increasingly popular. hoping thats seriously helping your bottom line. ***: hsien_ has joined #arpnetworks

I heard about you in ##FreeBSD, decided to give it a try. almost immediately had a client order a VPS as well. up_the_irons: nice :) ***: lealea has joined #arpnetworks lealea: hello
do some poeple use linux on the virtual machines? is it as well supported as freebsd here? jpalmer: lealea: a client of mine uses CentOS lealea: do you know if I ask for a Linux one, does it get virtio? jpalmer: lealea: arpnetworks will mount whatever ISO you want, in the vps. you can install essentially any OS you want. mattx86: lealea: virtio works fine for the NIC, and I suspect it works fine for the HDD, but can't say for sure myself
this is my first KVM VPS :) lealea: i'll make sure to ask for !kvr13 though :-p mattx86: lol why :P lealea: twitter.com/bsdvps - poor kvr13! mattx86: oh right
we suspect that may be due to the OS I was running lealea: oh mattx86: RouterOS jpalmer: mikrotik? mattx86: we formatted and reinstalled with a more 'normal' linux distro early this morning
yeah jpalmer: I've had that behave oddly in vm's before. never got to the root cause of it.
(never spent a ton of time investigating it, either though to be fair) mattx86: it seemed to work ok, but I did discover a bug that's present in the current stable and development versions
basically, IP Packing is fragile
if you enable it on an ethernet or ethernet over IP interface (and get the 'remote' end going as well)
you can then disable the respective ethernet/eoip interface and have the thing freeze up
works just the same to change the speed of a queue that sits on top of such an interface
in other words, networking would go down and the VNC session would freeze and not accept input
on my VPS, at least
same thing happened locally with two vmware instances
so I notified mikrotik about it.. haven't heard from them yet, but they did just have a MikroTik User Meeting in Phoenix
so I imagine some of them are jetlagged
anyways :) jpalmer: yeah, I watched the arin IPv6 presentation at that meeting. mattx86: oh yeah, that's right

if you scroll up, mattx86 mentioned that they think it has to do with running a routerOS vps. RandalSchwartz: interesting... the 10 minutes my VPS was down on kvr13 wasn't quite enough to trigger a nagios warning :)
that's a good threshold then up_the_irons: Yeah, we stopped running RouterOS ***: fink has joined #arpnetworks RandalSchwartz: RouterOS is a guest OS?
and that was crashing the host OS?
not good. mattx86: possibly, but yeah shatt: anyone here pretty familar with ipv6 + freebsd +pf ? RandalSchwartz: somewhat familiar
at least the pf part
and the ipv6 part
separately :) shatt: my problem is that I just added ipv6 to my pf rules
trying to allow irc out on my ipv6 hosts...
and well, I am having an issue heh or nine lol
It all works under ipv4, but I am new to ipv6
wanna help me troubleshoot?
if you have a moment.. RandalSchwartz: can you pastebin the relevant part? shatt: yup RandalSchwartz: or go to http://typewith.me/
then we can both edit it shatt: pm'd you link ***: Lefty has joined #arpnetworks Lefty: Anyone awake who can answer a support request? Having some trouble getting into the OOB management for my VPS
haven't had to use it before, so I'm panicing a bit now that I do
I'm in my portal, and I click on my VPS services, but I don't see the option for accessing my VNC or ssh consoles
it just reloads the same page again
the helpdesk says that's where I should find OOB managment systems tooth: have you logged into the consol via ssh yet? Lefty: No, never
just to my VPS, but it is currently unresponsive tooth: you're minorly SOL. you need to supply an ssh public key before you are allowed console access.
else you will need to use the straight up VNC method Lefty: even VNC?
I can't even get VNC tooth: direct vnc will work. Lefty: there's no option for it tooth: in "Service Detail"
there is OOB access
oh wait,
you never said console access. haha Lefty: I don't see Service Detail tooth: yeah, direct VNC will work, but its not crypted, that's the difference, my bad
are you logged into the portal? Lefty: yeah, logged into the portal, clicked on My Services
I see VPS FreeBSD VPS
and IP_BLOCK tooth: click on VPS Lefty: I click on the VPS entry, I get "200GB included", but nothing else tooth: should say "Virtual Machine Detail"
? Lefty: will upload a screenshot
http://i.imgur.com/aI0Nk.png RandalSchwartz: maybe you have a broken browser tooth: interesting. Lefty: tried two browsers on two different machines
firefox x2 and IE tooth: yeah. I have extra stuff below that menu RandalSchwartz: yeah weird
should not be Lefty: I can try chrome, standby tooth: okay. so it should be in THAT very screen RandalSchwartz: yes, in that very screen Lefty: I checked the HTML source and the linked javascript, but there are no extra links hidden in there tooth: might be a recent account?
I think I recall it not working when I first signed up Lefty: my VPS was up for 57 days before it went down, so I wouldn't think that's too new
I'll open a support request, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy or missing some step
thanks tooth, Randal tooth: from what you've said, doesn;t look like it up_the_irons: how strange RandalSchwartz: it should look like http://skitch.com/merlyn/d3sfw/arp-networks-control-panel up_the_irons: for the record, my html / css / javascript is made to work even in lynx. it will literally work in every browser, so it is not a browser issue
Lefty: pm me your email and i'll look up your account Lefty: roger that tooth: you made it work lynx?
I'm clearly subscribing to the correct service. up_the_irons: tooth: yeah, why not, there's nothing special in there Lefty: clearly! tooth: well, what other places are nerdy about that? Lefty: not many
it's refreshing up_the_irons: i'm a big time nerd tooth: I guessed that. I looked at a whole few providers. up_the_irons: look at the source for arpnetworks.com and see how tight it is ;) Lefty: Us nerds have to stick together, though RandalSchwartz: *we* nerds up_the_irons: srsly -: Lefty high-fives RandalSchwartz RandalSchwartz: <<== pedantic about writing tooth: Keep up the fine work. :-) RandalSchwartz: as in "good" or "very detailed" :) tooth: Can it be either? Lefty: up_the_irons++
I'm all fixed up! RandalSchwartz: what was broken?
besides yoru VPS console Lefty: Not sure yet, just logging in now
I assume it's due to running tmux on a machine that had run installworld/installkernel but not rebooted yet
