RandalSchwartzHien?
oops, missed him again
I'm wondering how he failed regarding root on ZFS for 8.1 under vmware
maybe he chose too small memory
[07:03]
...... (idle for 26mn)
awyeahSheesh, zfs as root seems like such a PITA, why do people even bother? [07:30]
bob^^i kinda agree, i must admit
i'm sure it'll get easier in the future
zfs has plenty of advantages, but for root there's probably not a huge amount to be gained
[07:31]
RandalSchwartzit's not all that hard.
and it *does* mean you can snapshot every single change on your system
and never have to worry about the size of /
RandalSchwartz updates ports, finds 25 packages that need updating )

awyeahWell that's true I suppose.
Still seems like a lot of people fail hard at it ;)
[07:54]
RandalSchwartzwell, there's a few basics you need
and not a lot of docs yet
it helps to have used it on solaris for example
[07:54]
***Jansean has left [07:57]
jpalmeruntil ZFS on freebsd has data dedup, I've got little interest in it. [07:58]
awyeahYeah data dedup would be very nice.
I'm currently using it on my box at home as a software RAID... I like it because when I want to expand I can just replace each drive one at a time.
[07:58]
***zhujiale has joined #arpnetworks [07:58]
awyeah(or I could add more drives and tak them on) [07:58]
zhujialehi there fellow arpers!
what's up with the console? anyone able to actualy use it?
I connect, get the menu, but if I press 'c' for serial console, it just hangs there
same for 't', it doesn't even display the tunneling instructions anymore
[08:00]
' /home/garry/menu.sh[163]: ?: unexpected `?' '
ok, I'm sending a mail ~_~
[08:08]
awyeahhrm
is that console.cust.arpnetworks.com?
[08:09]
***Hien has joined #arpnetworks [08:10]
zhujialeyes
can you actualy use it?
[08:10]
awyeahYeah..
Now I am on kvr07.
I'm not sure if what server you're on makes any difference.
[08:11]
zhujialefor instance, what happens when you press 'l' ?
for me it says 'No virtual machine'
'c' and 't' just hang there
kvr11 if it matters
[08:12]
RandalSchwartzmine seems to work (05) [08:14]
HienHello
RandalSchwartz: hello
[08:14]
RandalSchwartzyeah - my console is working
Hien - how much memory did you give your vmware? what installation did you follow?
[08:15]
HienRandalSchwartz:: I 've solve this problem with zfs [08:15]
RandalSchwartzthe default vmware is soething like 256MB... far too small [08:15]
HienRandalSchwartz:: even with 256MB work well [08:15]
RandalSchwartzwell, until you get a lot of disk activity. :) [08:16]
HienRandalSchwartz:: Some zsf tuning
RandalSchwartz: Test only
RandalSchwartz: not woking on it :)
RandalSchwartz: You working zfs on Arpnet box 20$?
[08:16]
RandalSchwartzI have a 20, 30, 60, and 80 :)
4 boxes
[08:17]
Hien20$ well zfs ? [08:17]
RandalSchwartzyes
all of them
[08:17]
Hien64bit :)
512MB ram not working zfs in 32bit..
64bit work well
[08:17]
RandalSchwartzall amd64 [08:18]
Hienno tweak [08:18]
RandalSchwartzonly most recent one on 8.1
I need to upgrade the other 3
[08:18]
wwmaybe the problem is not ram but address space? [08:18]
RandalSchwartzneed some downtime to do that though [08:18]
HienDo you recieve ipv6 t-shirt? [08:18]
RandalSchwartzyes [08:19]
Hienfast
:D
Low memory get warning "device busy" always
I followed http://wiki.freebsd.org/ZFSTuningGuide and success on 256MB ram 32bit :) but get warning "device busy"

RandalSchwartzyes. shirt. [14:46]
wallshotarp networks
has turned me from obsolete
to ipv6-enabled
thanks, arp networks!
[14:56]
jdoeRandalSchwartz: yeah, I now have one incoming too. The white ones aren't especially appealing, but hey, free shirt. [14:56]
wallshotnow if only i knew what to do with an ipv6 address on an internet that speaks ipv4 [14:56]
jdoewallshot: speak to other ipv6 hosts over ipv6 :P [14:57]
wallshotyeah that was gonna be my first guess! :)
is it like owning a hybrid vehicle? by adopting, am i advocating?
[14:57]
jdoeno.
I fully admit that I have no 'good' use for it right now.
but I expect I will soon.
eventually either things are going to switch to ipv6 or there's going to be a significant uptake of it.
so why not be ready?
[14:59]
wallshoti think i'll attempt to figure out how much traffic i can get to use ipv6 instead of ipv4
so that i can have some idea of wtf i'm doing when they deprecate the latter
wallshot has never even setup a dns zone with ipv6 addresses
[15:01]
jdoewhere you have an A record, add an AAAA as well.
hope that helps :P
[15:02]
wallshotthat's so easy! [15:05]
IPv6Freelywhere you getting free shirts? [15:05]
wallshotit would figure that my webhosting company's simple dns editor lets me setup CNAME and A records but not AAAA records. booo. :(
guess its time to run my own dns hosts
and srsly
[15:05]
jdoeIPv6Freely: if you complete HE.net's ipv6 certification thing and verify your address, they send you one. [15:06]
wallshotwhat's with the hush hush on the shirts [15:06]
jdoewhere "complete" is the Sage level stuff, not 1500 or whatever. [15:06]
IPv6Freelyoh. [15:06]
wallshotomg, i can learn about ipv6, AND get a free shirt at the same time??? [15:07]
RandalSchwartzheh [15:08]
wallshotwallshot bookmarks ipv6.he.net since he clearly doesn't have time to figure it all out before leaving work [15:08]
RandalSchwartz1024 points, and I'm stayin' there - http://ipv6.he.net/certification/scoresheet.php?pass_name=merlyn
why go for 1500?
you have to find 100 different v6 hosts, 1 per day.
seems time-consuming unless automatid
and I'm too lazy to automate it. ;0
[15:11]
wallshoti'd be tempted to write a script
and cron it
if it gets me 100 in 100 days with the effort it would have taken to get 2
i see jdoe on there under latest 10
hurray for earning Sage title
i think my level 66 drow enchanter in everquest had Sage as an available title
[15:13]
RandalSchwartzevercrack? :) [15:15]
wallshotyah i loved that game
tried returning to it years later, and couldn't get over lame 90's graphics
anyway time to bail for the day. have a good night all
