oops, missed him again
I'm wondering how he failed regarding root on ZFS for 8.1 under vmware
maybe he chose too small memory awyeah: Sheesh, zfs as root seems like such a PITA, why do people even bother? bob^^: i kinda agree, i must admit
i'm sure it'll get easier in the future
zfs has plenty of advantages, but for root there's probably not a huge amount to be gained RandalSchwartz: it's not all that hard.
and it *does* mean you can snapshot every single change on your system
and never have to worry about the size of / -: RandalSchwartz updates ports, finds 25 packages that need updating ) ***: schmir has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
Jansean has joined #arpnetworks awyeah: Well that's true I suppose.
Still seems like a lot of people fail hard at it ;) RandalSchwartz: well, there's a few basics you need
and not a lot of docs yet
it helps to have used it on solaris for example ***: Jansean has left jpalmer: until ZFS on freebsd has data dedup, I've got little interest in it. awyeah: Yeah data dedup would be very nice.
I'm currently using it on my box at home as a software RAID... I like it because when I want to expand I can just replace each drive one at a time. ***: zhujiale has joined #arpnetworks awyeah: (or I could add more drives and tak them on) zhujiale: hi there fellow arpers!
what's up with the console? anyone able to actualy use it?
I connect, get the menu, but if I press 'c' for serial console, it just hangs there
same for 't', it doesn't even display the tunneling instructions anymore
' /home/garry/menu.sh[163]: ?: unexpected `?' '
ok, I'm sending a mail ~_~ awyeah: hrm
is that console.cust.arpnetworks.com? ***: Hien has joined #arpnetworks zhujiale: yes
can you actualy use it? awyeah: Yeah..
Now I am on kvr07.
I'm not sure if what server you're on makes any difference. zhujiale: for instance, what happens when you press 'l' ?
for me it says 'No virtual machine'
'c' and 't' just hang there
kvr11 if it matters RandalSchwartz: mine seems to work (05) Hien: Hello
RandalSchwartz: hello RandalSchwartz: yeah - my console is working
Hien - how much memory did you give your vmware? what installation did you follow? Hien: RandalSchwartz:: I 've solve this problem with zfs RandalSchwartz: the default vmware is soething like 256MB... far too small Hien: RandalSchwartz:: even with 256MB work well RandalSchwartz: well, until you get a lot of disk activity. :) Hien: RandalSchwartz:: Some zsf tuning
RandalSchwartz: Test only
RandalSchwartz: not woking on it :)
RandalSchwartz: You working zfs on Arpnet box 20$? RandalSchwartz: I have a 20, 30, 60, and 80 :)
4 boxes Hien: 20$ well zfs ? RandalSchwartz: yes
all of them Hien: 64bit :)
512MB ram not working zfs in 32bit..
64bit work well RandalSchwartz: all amd64 Hien: no tweak RandalSchwartz: only most recent one on 8.1
I need to upgrade the other 3 ww: maybe the problem is not ram but address space? RandalSchwartz: need some downtime to do that though Hien: Do you recieve ipv6 t-shirt? RandalSchwartz: yes Hien: fast
:D
Low memory get warning "device busy" always
I followed http://wiki.freebsd.org/ZFSTuningGuide and success on 256MB ram 32bit :) but get warning "device busy" ***: zhujiale has quit IRC (Quit: Page closed)

RandalSchwartz: yes. shirt. wallshot: arp networks
has turned me from obsolete
to ipv6-enabled
thanks, arp networks! jdoe: RandalSchwartz: yeah, I now have one incoming too. The white ones aren't especially appealing, but hey, free shirt. wallshot: now if only i knew what to do with an ipv6 address on an internet that speaks ipv4 jdoe: wallshot: speak to other ipv6 hosts over ipv6 :P wallshot: yeah that was gonna be my first guess! :)
is it like owning a hybrid vehicle? by adopting, am i advocating? jdoe: no.
I fully admit that I have no 'good' use for it right now.
but I expect I will soon.
eventually either things are going to switch to ipv6 or there's going to be a significant uptake of it.
so why not be ready? wallshot: i think i'll attempt to figure out how much traffic i can get to use ipv6 instead of ipv4
so that i can have some idea of wtf i'm doing when they deprecate the latter -: wallshot has never even setup a dns zone with ipv6 addresses jdoe: where you have an A record, add an AAAA as well.
hope that helps :P wallshot: that's so easy! IPv6Freely: where you getting free shirts? wallshot: it would figure that my webhosting company's simple dns editor lets me setup CNAME and A records but not AAAA records. booo. :(
guess its time to run my own dns hosts
and srsly jdoe: IPv6Freely: if you complete HE.net's ipv6 certification thing and verify your address, they send you one. wallshot: what's with the hush hush on the shirts jdoe: where "complete" is the Sage level stuff, not 1500 or whatever. IPv6Freely: oh. wallshot: omg, i can learn about ipv6, AND get a free shirt at the same time??? RandalSchwartz: heh -: wallshot bookmarks ipv6.he.net since he clearly doesn't have time to figure it all out before leaving work RandalSchwartz: 1024 points, and I'm stayin' there - http://ipv6.he.net/certification/scoresheet.php?pass_name=merlyn
why go for 1500?
you have to find 100 different v6 hosts, 1 per day.
seems time-consuming unless automatid
and I'm too lazy to automate it. ;0 wallshot: i'd be tempted to write a script
and cron it
if it gets me 100 in 100 days with the effort it would have taken to get 2
i see jdoe on there under latest 10
hurray for earning Sage title
i think my level 66 drow enchanter in everquest had Sage as an available title RandalSchwartz: evercrack? :) wallshot: yah i loved that game
tried returning to it years later, and couldn't get over lame 90's graphics
anyway time to bail for the day. have a good night all ***: wallshot has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving.)
