ww has joined #arpnetworks ww: hello! just made an order for a freebsd host... looking for a new home for styx.org jpalmer: ww: nice. I just did the same. suprisingly, it's pleasantly more performant than I would have expected after dealing with certain other VPS's ww: good to hear! we'll see how it goes, hasn't been set up yet (I just ordered it a few minutes ago)
i'll just be happy not to be forced to use linux on it anymore - styx.org has been through sunos, hp-ux, irix, netbsd and linux, so this won't be the first os migration :) jpalmer: cool.
btw: they are a bit slow on provisioning (they do batch provisioning, rather than on-demand) but after it's up.. it's pretty nice.
being able to reinstall the OS in any custom setup you want is incredibly nice too (I don't care for the "one big root" layout) ***: bsd_man has joined #arpnetworks bsd_man: I have just passed IPv6 cert http://ipv6.he.net/certification/scoresheet.php?pass_name=phanquochien ***: bsd_man has left RandalSchwartz: I just installed my 4th arp vps yesteray ww: are they 32 or 64 bit? RandalSchwartz: amd64, says my uname ww: brilliant! RandalSchwartz: all four of my boxes have zfs for / ww: some software that i use for testing and experiments (4store, mongodb) doesn't play well with 32 bit addressing RandalSchwartz: I did a FLOSS Weekly interview with one of the guys from 10gen about mongo ww: RandalSchwartz: I'm new to zfs on freebsd. last i used it was with 5.X. may as well give it a try though ***: nukefree has quit IRC (Quit: ZNC - http://znc.sourceforge.net) ww: we (http://okfn.org/) did some experiments with storing rdf (json-serialised) in mongo
unfortunately had to abandon it as most of our infrastructure is in aws... and 64 bit hosts are *expensive* there RandalSchwartz: Yeah - I had insightcruises.com at EC2 for about 10 months
now they're at ARP jpalmer: my employer is looking for a decent VPS, but they use CentOS (which isn't mentioned on the supported platforms page) so I think I'm going to email support, and see if they'll download a CentOS .iso, and let me install it. if all works well, I may recommend them to my employer. RandalSchwartz: as is stonehenge.com ww: nice!
i must admit i've never been much for perl though ***: nukefree has joined #arpnetworks ww: i was frightened off of it by having to maintain really badly written network management scripts at e>Connect/Metronet/ATT Canada ***: cedwards has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) ww: some of my best friends have all sorts of wonderful stories about the london (uk) perlmongers through

Hello RadalSchwartz RandalSchwartz: hey Hien: hi
:D
You have got new vps? RandalSchwartz: which "you"?
me? ***: ziyourenxiang has quit IRC (Quit: ziyourenxiang) Hien: you
:D
Radal RandalSchwartz: The one yesterday? yes.
already active
took about three hours to configure the machine, and clone the web pages
but now I have to wait to get a new secure certificate before I can make it go live.
that'll have to wait until this evening Hien: uhm,
How long you have got vps after make order? RandalSchwartz: about a day Hien: uhm. ww: I'm expecting 24-48 hours - that's what it says on the website Hien: I'm planning buy vps at arpnetworks in Oct ww: Something to watch while you wait? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7190175107515525470# Hien: cool
I go to bed now..because it's 12:35 AM in my country....good bye all...Good day to everyone ;) ww: good evening! ***: Hien has left ""Go bed""

schmir has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 272 seconds) jpalmer: just curious, I saw on the FAQ that there are a few supported OS's, and that if we provide a link in wget format, we can do custom OS installs.. is there a reason ubuntu and debian are the only linux distros offered? mike-burns: So far as I know, no reason, just personal preference and experience. But up_the_irons might know more. jpalmer: gotcha. I'm a FreeBSD guy myself, but.. I'm going to ask for CentOS so I can evaluate that combo (ARP/CentOS) for a client. I'll revert back to FreeBSD in a few weeks.
thanks for the info toddf: jpalmer: popular demand in general is the reasoning in general from what I understand, consider `supported' to mean `pre-installed image provided' and `unsupported' to mean `provide url to iso and install your own image' with misc details glossed over jpalmer: that works for me. with the console access, I don't need to worry about support. thanks for the explanations. RandalSchwartz: in fact, I haven't used an ARP box yet where I left the orignal disk alone
it'd be simpler for me if he'd just provision it bare. :)
that way it'd come up on the cd install, and I could skip the F12 fretting around ***: nesta has quit IRC (Quit: later skater!)

bykeryder is now known as nesta jdoe: the what? jpalmer: I've never been a fan of a single / partition, so even with the freebsd cd, the first thing I did was reinstall ;) RandalSchwartz: you know, hitting F12 to ask it to boot the cdrom instead of the disk
if the disk was wiped, I could avoid that
the nice thing about zfs is you can decide later
one big zfs partition, and you can subvolume it as you wish jpalmer: having never used xen, is the virtual VNC /ipkvm setup a normal part of Xen? or something ARP has done custom? RandalSchwartz: it's probably off the shelf
you have serial console access, and vnc access
and a reboot interface to come at it from above jpalmer: serial console I'm familiar with. the custom vnc/ipkvm deal, I'm not familiar with. It's pretty nice. up_the_irons: jpalmer: the reason is, i simply haven't made template images for other Linux OS's; having focused on freebsd and openbsd, it is daunting to add even more linux distros jpalmer: up_the_irons: when you say template images, are you referring to kickstart scripts, or are you doing something like remastering ISO's?
up_the_irons: and I want to be clear. certainly not complaining or "faulting" anyone. was more curious than anything. it makes little difference to me, if I have to wait an extra day to install the intended OS. ***: Hien has joined #arpnetworks Hien: Hello jpalmer: hola Hien: Hola jpalmer ***: Hien has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
