RandalSchwartz: nagios!
DDevine: One of the business units uses Nagios (actually, its a fork of nagios that I can't remember the name) for their own project servers but the main organisational IT department doesn't. *sigh*
RandalSchwartz: I installed nagios recently
it feels hacky, but useable
and it does basic stuff out of the box
moer complex stuff looks hard though
fink_: RandalSchwartz: i basically do whatever you do, so let me know how it goes
RandalSchwartz: heh
I'm thinking of jumping off this bridge. :)
fink_: RandalSchwartz: have you heard about puppet?
RandalSchwartz: yes - I interviewed fellow portlander Luke Kanies for FLOSS Weekly
puppet would make sense if I had 10 systems
I have only 3
DDevine: Oh hey I have heard of you Randal though Linux Outlaws.
RandalSchwartz: although capturing the install status might be useful
fink_: does nagios make sense for only 3?
RandalSchwartz: yes - Dan and Fab mention me there from time to time
Nagios makes sense for 1
DDevine: And me
RandalSchwartz: Nagios isn't puppet
Puppet - config management
Nagios - monitoring
DDevine: Dan "not the cloud man" devine
fink_: DDevine: yea, he's kind of famous, he was in that 'hackers' movie
RandalSchwartz: nagios works for anything that you need to monitor
especially when you want to have soft failures, hard failures, and escalation
nagios has that all built in already
which was nice
for example, missing one ping, no biggy
zjl999: how long does it usualy take to receive your VPS? I just ordered a few minutes ago, and I'm all excited ~_~
RandalSchwartz: missing 4 in a row... send SMS
DDevine: I'll dig up teh name of the fork that is really nice.
RandalSchwartz: missing that for a half hour, send second-level SMS

Angelina Jolie was
DDevine: http://www.icinga.org - very nice nagios fork.
zjl999: Mine took about 1.5 days.
RandalSchwartz: no port for icinga in freebsd :(
nagios has a port
that's a big plus
fink_: i don't even consider software that doesn't have a port
RandalSchwartz: or a starboard? :)
almost all my Perl modules that I've installed have ports
the rest are in BSDPAN world, so at least I can track them

RandalSchwartz: I'm a block and a half closer to my hotel.
***: fink_ has left
RandalSchwartz: what's bnc?
like a network cable?
Cr4zi3: no
bnc is an irc bouncer
RandalSchwartz: oh.
it was probably named after the BNC cable though :)
I'm running FBSD8.0 though
soon to be 8.1
Cr4zi3: no it wasn't..
it was named bnc short for bouncer
RandalSchwartz: BNC looks long abandoned
no updates in two years
Cr4zi3: psybnc to be specific
mine crashes on me regardless of what I do..
RandalSchwartz: crash how?
Cr4zi3: seg fault
RandalSchwartz: that's odd
what language is it in? C?
Cr4zi3: yup
RandalSchwartz: C. How quaint.
Cr4zi3: or cpp
one of the 2
RandalSchwartz: can do that stuff in Perl so much easier. :)
cpp is even more evil
cpp is evil squared :)
what OO *shouldn't* have been
luckily, the JITting smalltalks have caught up, even surpassed in some ways
then there's always Objective C
Cr4zi3: if I can't get the box workin by the 19th, I'll have to find another provider..
RandalSchwartz: maybe a different tool instead?
there are a lot of IRC bouncers, right?
looks like even psybnc is no longer supported

or do what I do... run screen on the server, and an irc client inside that
that works just fine
Cr4zi3 - how old were you when you picked your IRC nick?
I'm guessing, 14. close?
Cr4zi3: I didn't pick it, it was given to me..
RandalSchwartz: you accepted using it though
and at what age?
Cr4zi3: no clue
RandalSchwartz: If someone said to me "you are now jeffrey", I'd still have a say in the matter
uh - what do you mean no clue
how old were you when you started using Cr4zi3?
Cr4zi3: exactly what it sounds like..
I have no clue
RandalSchwartz: how old are you now?
and how long have you been using it?
Cr4zi3: not something on my have to keep as a high priority list..
RandalSchwartz: within a few years on each... I'm not picky
at this point, you're not worth helping. {sigh}
Cr4zi3: HA
wtf ever
RandalSchwartz: hope that works out for you
Cr4zi3: just cuz I can't remeber how long its been since I started using my nick
RandalSchwartz: I'm guessing you're about 12 right now
Cr4zi3: give me a break
have a nice life
RandalSchwartz: why should I? you're being non-responsive
Cr4zi3: so anyone able to give me some useful help ?
RandalSchwartz: if you were an adult, you'd at least have a bit more interaciton
Definitely 12. Maybe 14, already in that "I got my crap together" phase
I remember that rather vividly. :)
lots of updates to do on my servers sunday morning
I hate it when apache updates... because that's often actual downtime
DDevine: Cr4zi3: I would suggest using a different (more maintained) bouncer software. There are many that do the same job.
Cr4zi3: DDevine; that's just it, it does the job, just not on this VPS..
DDevine: So you have it running on the same version of FreeBSD elsewhere?
Cr4zi3: I have 5 other servers runnin w/ psyBNC, from 7.2 to 8.1, and this is the only one that is giviing me problems..
yup
DDevine: Check that the libs are all the same version.
Cr4zi3: I've verify everything is as close to the same as possible..
DDevine: I have only been with this host for a day and I am new to FreeBSD, so I'm not much help.
Cr4zi3: thnx for the effort.. ;)
I even tried to lastest patches for psy that are suppose to fix most of the bugs, but this is something that no one has seen before..
its seg faulting on initilizing blowfish
DDevine: Does blowfish work in other programs?
Cr4zi3: irssi, and bitchx both work fine
and it only segs once a client has connected to it..
once the client connects, sends pass, it crashes
DDevine: If you think is a problem with the FreeBSD that the provider installed, you could probably request that they initialise the installer and you can complete it over VNC.
zjl999: I'm curious... what kind of speed does an arpnetworks VPS get? both downloading a file and sending one?
Cr4zi3: DDevine; Yea, I was thinkin bout that.. ;)
I just don't like unencrypted VNC.. ;P
DDevine: pfft.
zjl999: can anyone try downloading http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test from their arpnetworks vps and tell me what the speed is?
i know it doesn't mean much, but still... :)
DDevine: I'll give it a go in a minute
zjl999: thanks
DDevine: 100%[======================================>] 104,857,600 10.3M/s in 9.8s
not too shabby.
zjl999: In the FAQ they say each server has a 100mbit connection.
zjl999: yeah I just saw that
anyway, I'm just waiting for mine then :-)
RandalSchwartz: it'll take a day or two
DDevine: We came up with a great way to get teh server room temps down while the AC is broken. One fan on top of the rack is pushing hot air out the top of the door way and one air pushing cold air at the bottom towards the server intake.
RandalSchwartz: whenever up_the_irons gets around to it :)
DDevine: Temps dropped by 60% easily.
Ghetto hacks.
RandalSchwartz: unless you can make a tight seal, fans are not very good at sucking
how do you have it sealed?
-: RandalSchwartz is the son of a 30-year veteran of heating and air conditioning
RandalSchwartz: as in, I get the blowing at the bottom
but not the sucking
DDevine: pedestal fans I mean
RandalSchwartz: yeah, that's not very useful then
it will more easily just suck the air to the sides of it than behind it
DDevine: It moves the hot air out of the room and gets cool air in to the servers
It seems to be the most effective set up we have tried so far.
RandalSchwartz: if it was a flat fan, sticking it directly on top of the cabinet would have been better
as long as you could gt a good seal
Cr4zi3: DDevine; Yea, it will work.. we have had to do that many times in the data centers
RandalSchwartz: how would Cr4zi3 know at age 14?
there are two reasons to use a l33t nick on IRC:
(1) you *are* 14
(2) you picked the nick at 14 and now everyone knows you by that name
that's it
DDevine: There was a lot of hot air behind the cabs, so getting rid of that has helped the ambient temps hugely.
RandalSchwartz: DDevine - but in that case, blowing as well as sucking helps, and is easier to calculate
dont' ever think of a fan as "sucking"
DDevine: I don't think I said sucking.
They are both blowing hot and cold air in the right directions.
RandalSchwartz: well, you can't really "blow hot air"
Cr4zi3: sucking ?
RandalSchwartz: that implies "suck" to me
DDevine: I guess so.
RandalSchwartz: since the hot air originates at one point
Cr4zi3: much be talkin to someone else..
RandalSchwartz: Yes, someone more sane than you. :)
if you put me on ignore, you can expect this channel to make no sense. :)
***: zjl999 has quit IRC (Quit: Page closed)
RandalSchwartz: my Learning Perl course is now out on video
DDevine: The whacky defaults for vi and vim are driving me nuts.
Is this a FreeBSD thing?
RandalSchwartz: vi and vim? :)
-: RandalSchwartz has not seen vi or vim in years
DDevine: It automatically exists out of insert mode all the time and it won't let me use backspace or delete lines without "dd".
RandalSchwartz: eww.
maybe just a bad mapping for backsapce
or delete
or maybe you have DEL for interrupt
mike-burns: I haven't seen those wacky defaults.
DDevine: I have never had this problem in Linux ever.
RandalSchwartz: but linux isn't unix
it's a fiction of a finlandian
whom I play pool with, so I should be careful here. :)
DDevine: I was simply saying that in my previous experience with Vim, I had never come across this.
mike-burns: I've almost exclusively used FreeBSD and vim and also never seen this.
***: zjl999 has joined #arpnetworks
DDevine: So your backspace key behaves properly?
I'm going to try coping across a vimrc from a Linux machine.
Yay, works like a charm.
RandalSchwartz: "coping"?
like "copying"?
or something else?
surely not cope - int?
or cope - ing? :)
DDevine: Sorry for my typo.
RandalSchwartz: which direction?
did you mean copying?
DDevine: I didn't notice or I would have immediately s/coping/copying
RandalSchwartz: ahh
ok
DDevine: I switch keyboards constantly so it can be hard to type accurately at times.
RandalSchwartz: that *would* be complex
DDevine: I have decided I might need some extra IPv4 addresses - how do I order these?
