DDevineOne of the business units uses Nagios (actually, its a fork of nagios that I can't remember the name) for their own project servers but the main organisational IT department doesn't. *sigh* [17:36]
RandalSchwartzI installed nagios recently
it feels hacky, but useable
and it does basic stuff out of the box

RandalSchwartzalthough capturing the install status might be useful [17:39]

RandalSchwartzyes - Dan and Fab mention me there from time to time
Nagios makes sense for 1
[17:39]

Puppet - config management
Nagios - monitoring

RandalSchwartznagios works for anything that you need to monitor
especially when you want to have soft failures, hard failures, and escalation
nagios has that all built in already
which was nice
for example, missing one ping, no biggy
[17:40]

[17:56]
Cr4zi3no
bnc is an irc bouncer
[17:57]
RandalSchwartzoh.
it was probably named after the BNC cable though :)
I'm running FBSD8.0 though
soon to be 8.1
[17:57]
Cr4zi3no it wasn't..
it was named bnc short for bouncer
[17:59]
RandalSchwartzBNC looks long abandoned
no updates in two years
[18:00]
Cr4zi3psybnc to be specific

RandalSchwartzthat's odd

RandalSchwartzC. How quaint. [18:03]
Cr4zi3or cpp
one of the 2
[18:03]
RandalSchwartzcan do that stuff in Perl so much easier. :)
cpp is even more evil
cpp is evil squared :)
what OO *shouldn't* have been
luckily, the JITting smalltalks have caught up, even surpassed in some ways
then there's always Objective C
[18:03]
Cr4zi3if I can't get the box workin by the 19th, I'll have to find another provider.. [18:05]
RandalSchwartzmaybe a different tool instead?
there are a lot of IRC bouncers, right?

[18:17]
RandalSchwartzwhy should I? you're being non-responsive [18:17]
Cr4zi3so anyone able to give me some useful help ? [18:17]
RandalSchwartzif you were an adult, you'd at least have a bit more interaciton
Definitely 12. Maybe 14, already in that "I got my crap together" phase
I remember that rather vividly. :)
lots of updates to do on my servers sunday morning
I hate it when apache updates... because that's often actual downtime
[18:18]
DDevineCr4zi3: I would suggest using a different (more maintained) bouncer software. There are many that do the same job. [18:24]
Cr4zi3DDevine; that's just it, it does the job, just not on this VPS.. [18:24]
DDevineSo you have it running on the same version of FreeBSD elsewhere? [18:25]
Cr4zi3I have 5 other servers runnin w/ psyBNC, from 7.2 to 8.1, and this is the only one that is giviing me problems..
yup
[18:25]
DDevineCheck that the libs are all the same version. [18:25]
Cr4zi3I've verify everything is as close to the same as possible.. [18:25]
DDevineI have only been with this host for a day and I am new to FreeBSD, so I'm not much help. [18:26]
Cr4zi3thnx for the effort.. ;)
I even tried to lastest patches for psy that are suppose to fix most of the bugs, but this is something that no one has seen before..
its seg faulting on initilizing blowfish
[18:26]
DDevineDoes blowfish work in other programs? [18:28]
Cr4zi3irssi, and bitchx both work fine
and it only segs once a client has connected to it..
once the client connects, sends pass, it crashes
[18:28]
DDevineIf you think is a problem with the FreeBSD that the provider installed, you could probably request that they initialise the installer and you can complete it over VNC. [18:34]
zjl999I'm curious... what kind of speed does an arpnetworks VPS get? both downloading a file and sending one? [18:34]
Cr4zi3DDevine; Yea, I was thinkin bout that.. ;)
I just don't like unencrypted VNC.. ;P
[18:34]
DDevinepfft. [18:41]
zjl999can anyone try downloading http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test from their arpnetworks vps and tell me what the speed is?
i know it doesn't mean much, but still... :)
[18:41]
DDevineI'll give it a go in a minute [18:42]
zjl999thanks [18:43]
DDevine100%[======================================>] 104,857,600 10.3M/s in 9.8s
not too shabby.
zjl999: In the FAQ they say each server has a 100mbit connection.
[18:44]
zjl999yeah I just saw that
anyway, I'm just waiting for mine then :-)
[18:49]
RandalSchwartzit'll take a day or two [18:54]
DDevineWe came up with a great way to get teh server room temps down while the AC is broken. One fan on top of the rack is pushing hot air out the top of the door way and one air pushing cold air at the bottom towards the server intake. [18:54]
RandalSchwartzwhenever up_the_irons gets around to it :) [18:54]
DDevineTemps dropped by 60% easily.
Ghetto hacks.
[18:54]
RandalSchwartzunless you can make a tight seal, fans are not very good at sucking
how do you have it sealed?
RandalSchwartz is the son of a 30-year veteran of heating and air conditioning
as in, I get the blowing at the bottom
but not the sucking
[18:55]
DDevinepedestal fans I mean [18:58]
RandalSchwartzyeah, that's not very useful then
it will more easily just suck the air to the sides of it than behind it
[18:59]
DDevineIt moves the hot air out of the room and gets cool air in to the servers
It seems to be the most effective set up we have tried so far.
[18:59]
RandalSchwartzif it was a flat fan, sticking it directly on top of the cabinet would have been better
as long as you could gt a good seal
[19:00]
Cr4zi3DDevine; Yea, it will work.. we have had to do that many times in the data centers [19:00]
RandalSchwartzhow would Cr4zi3 know at age 14?
there are two reasons to use a l33t nick on IRC:
(1) you *are* 14
(2) you picked the nick at 14 and now everyone knows you by that name
that's it
[19:00]
DDevineThere was a lot of hot air behind the cabs, so getting rid of that has helped the ambient temps hugely. [19:01]
RandalSchwartzDDevine - but in that case, blowing as well as sucking helps, and is easier to calculate
dont' ever think of a fan as "sucking"
[19:01]
DDevineI don't think I said sucking.
They are both blowing hot and cold air in the right directions.
[19:02]
RandalSchwartzwell, you can't really "blow hot air" [19:02]
Cr4zi3sucking ? [19:02]
RandalSchwartzthat implies "suck" to me [19:02]
DDevineI guess so. [19:02]
RandalSchwartzsince the hot air originates at one point [19:03]
Cr4zi3much be talkin to someone else.. [19:03]
RandalSchwartzYes, someone more sane than you. :)
