mornin' folks. morning morning Hi. howdy doody just a little portupgrade -a action portmaster -ad here. bash updates. nesta >3 <3 evemn omg ooh portmaster. why do there need to be so many damn port management tools. I do like the pkg_cutleaves tool. <3 BeBoo_ why aren't you on BIRC? :D hehe sorry my client quit sec I wonder what happens if I demand too many shm values during boot some settings are only valid in /boot/loader.conf so I have to reboot to set them (trying to tune for postgresql) this *is* a big instance, so maybe it's not too critical hello hello how goes it yo. hi what's up? not much being bored need to write a "mission statement" to propose a serverfault.com like website for Life Science sysadms life science sysadms have niche needs? indeed mainly support the crazy bio apps also some HPC, and big mem problems supporting instruments as well oh I wasn't really thinking bio as a life science, for whatever reason I was thinking like... psych and shit. yeah, that makes sense. ah yea on a fun side note, check out the SGI Altix UV100: http://www.sgi.com/products/servers/altix/uv/ the life sciences dudes had a... haha yeah I was just going to say, a nice altix. shame they didn't have any actual MIPS gear :( if it's not IRIX, it's not a real SGI :( lol I need X86 stuff these days no one devs for those platforms everyone does, but that's hardly the point er I mean everyone needs x86 yea dunno what I'd build now. bad enough I have new sparc gear if I had an HPC-level budget, jesus what I could buy... that UV100 is 1.6M list btw as long as your problems fit inside 512G or 1T of ram its still cheaper to use Dell R910s and more dense half a million bought ~240 cores with gigE interconnects a couple years ago. lets see (with edu pricing) buying 5x R910 32 core each, 512G for under 200k so 160 core, 2.5T different target though... this was for a math group, so the problem could be broken up pretty effectively, but was discrete enough that the interconnect didn't matter too much I think we had a gig per core, so 240G yea I would love to have parallelizable problems I'd love to have HPC problems again, I miss playing with clusters :/ yea quite fun yeah it really was. Altix looks fun as well especially when I didn't have to worry about power or anything, so I could spin it up on trivial shit in the downtime heh yea now it's all "HERE ARE A COUPLE WHITEBOXES, INSTALL JAVA. THANKS." heh thats no fun o_O Has anyone seen an open source stackoverflow.com, with a linkable wiki? current best option I've seen is http://shapado.com/ I could have sworn I saw one...
