I'd have to look up how, but it's possible. [07:12] ahh [07:12] I didn't know that [07:14] set insertmode " this goes in your ~/.vimrc [07:14] hm.. you can do regex search and search/replace in vi right? [07:14] Yes. [07:14] I'll have to try this :) [07:20] also "vim -c start" or you could alias it in ~/.bashrc [07:20] feels weird though ;) but I'll tinker with it [07:20] Well the more comfortable you get with vim, the less time you'll spend in insert mode. [07:21] do you guys recommend vim over vi? [07:22] I do, yes. [07:22] It's all of vi, plus more features. [07:23] using vim over vi is like using svn instead of cvs... you didn't go far enough. :) [07:54] hehe [07:55] it appears that one side-effect of using 'set insertmode "' in ~/.vimrc is that you lose the escape key [07:56] http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Start_in_insert_mode_without_losing_your_escape_key [07:57] Oh ^L seems to be ESC when using insertmode. [07:58] ah, yep [08:06] mike-burns: thanks for the tips :) [08:08] Any time. Oh and let me plug my vim course on September 1st in Boston ... [08:09] (Just kidding.) [08:09] oh heh :P [08:10] "vim for dummies, because that's who uses it!" :) [08:10] * RandalSchwartz ducks [08:10] get em! :D [08:10] RandalSchwartz: Are you an emacs guy? [08:10] of course. [08:10] I'm even IRC'ing from emacs :) [08:10] Ah. I can respect that. [08:10] Terminal.app -> ssh -> screen -> emacs -> irc.el :) [08:11] Well that's exausting, but whatever works! [08:11] the tough part was getting utf-8 all the way through [08:11] I'm shocked you got that! [08:11] and yet, it works [08:11] I had to get every piece of that to know "hey, not latin-1... this is utf-8" [08:13] wow :) good work [08:17] on the other hand, I assume you're using OSX? [08:21] I was just thinking, that if you were using something like Fedora for your desktop, you probably wouldn't attempt anything more complex than necessary ;) [08:21] yeah OSX [08:21] cool [08:23] gah. svn is weird [08:23] I've accidentally been working in trunk/ when I should have been under branch/ [08:23] now I have to figure out how to move my changes over [08:23] luckily I haven't committed yet [08:24] git is so much easier to understand :) [08:25] I suppose I could make a big patch, and try to apply it to the branch [08:25] just use git svn instead? [08:25] the most I've done with a VCS has been thru tortoisecvs on windows, but I'll be getting into using git soon though [08:26] aside from cvs/svn/git checkouts hehe [08:26] well - git svn won't help at this point [08:26] since I already have this dirty tree that I need to publish as a branch [08:26] even though it's sitting under trunk/* [08:27] but also only *some* of the files, and I don't know how svn ci picks files [08:27] the docs aren't clear [08:28] * RandalSchwartz starts reading the red-bean tutorial [08:31] darn it. that wasn't helpful enough [08:32] maybe I'll go hop onto #svn :) [08:46] *** LT has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving) [10:27] *** Jestre has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 260 seconds) [10:27] *** nuke` has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 276 seconds) [10:29] *** Jestre has joined #arpnetworks [11:11] *** nuke` has joined #arpnetworks [12:38] *** schmir has joined #arpnetworks [12:56] *** heavysixer has quit IRC (Quit: BAMPF!)
