ultimately, I ended up using 'mtr' from the CLI of my desktop ;)
I wish cacti would show packet loss... because, from what I can tell, it doesn't
at least in CactiEZ
(slightly older version of cacti in it)
btw, you can pause 'mtr' by typing 'pa' while its running, but apparently, you can't resume it?  I dunno
cacti shows whatever youve configured for it to show
works well enough for my purposes though
I suppose I could take a look at the graph template for Unix - Ping Latency or what not, but that seems messy
You could configure cacti to use a custom script that uses, say mtr, to show packet loss in a graph
cacti is just a pretty frontend for MRTG, which can literally graph anything you throw at it

see, the plan was to graph bandwidth usage in addition to latency and packet loss, to determine to source of the issue on my ADSL

Woot! My apartment is now fully ipv6 enabled, including wifi.  Took a while to get that right.
Plus, there's a nice little script to update he.net's endpoint address for me, in case my IP addr changes.

i jammed a small piece of plastic in there to make the cable stay, and taped it on for good measure
i didnt want to uncable my case from the back side because its all so tight, so i just yanked on the drive. would have been fine if the sata cable had been straight, but it was one of those right-angle ones
so it snapped the little l-shaped piece of plastic off the drive
ouch
i was gonna try the whole dump/restore method, which seemed to be working except i wasnt sure how to dump / because it dumped everything recursively (including partitions /var, /usr, etc)
so i said to hell with it, its not like the drive is actually going bad, i can wait for a dd to finish
