I'd considered a year or two ago, on possibly buying a toshiba laptop with opensolaris pre-installed

there's just going to be a really long delay.
illumos is going for a complete open build by the end of the year
... at which point the opensolaris distros are going to have to figure out what to do with it.
so I figure by this time next year, we might see what should have been 2010.03

interesting that they announced the project on Aug 3rd, 10 days prior to the oracle leak
seems people already had their ideas about oracle's plans
I think most people saw it coming at that point.

they didn't kill off solaris
and they didn't stop releasing code
they'll just release it at the same time as the official solaris releases.
