[05:50]
awyeahHow do you guys all set your time zones? I've got mine set to eastern, since I live here, even though the box is technically located in pacific. [05:51]
nestaawyeah: for the shell or your IRC client
$ cat ok/home/nefilim/.irssi/startup
LOAD fish
script exec $ENV{'TZ'}='GMT-1';
or put an export in your bahs_profile
[05:53]
awyeahfor the system
the actual system time zoner.

RandalSchwartzawyeah
time zone set differently depending on OS
[06:34]
...... (idle for 26mn)
must've been from last night. :) [07:00]
awyeahyeah?
reason I do it is because it's less work when I'm looking throughl ogs.
[07:03]
mattx86awyeah: yeah, I do the same, regardless of the box's physical location [07:04]
RandalSchwartzawyeah - I'm answering your question
the timezone settings depend on the OS
so ... which OS?
and again, crickets. :)
awyeah?
maybe he has me on ignore
[07:09]
mattx86I don't think he meant so much as how to set it, but what's your preference when it comes to setting the system timezone. e.g., I live where the timezone is CDT, although at one time I had a VPS in NY/NJ, which is EDT [07:13]
RandalSchwartzah
yeah, I'm lucky in that my primary timezone is PT
and now my machine also is
but even when it was in texas, I used PT
[07:14]
mattx86but I'd still set the VPS timezone to CDT
ah, yeah
[07:14]
RandalSchwartzwhen I travel for work, I still have a lot of activities tied to PT anyway
so having the machine time be PT is a nice reminder
[07:15]
bob^^my vps thinks it's in GMT
(the only REAL timezone)
[07:15]
RandalSchwartzit's right down there at the bottom of the emacs window constantly :) [07:16]
bob^^actually, i'm wrong - at the minute mine's in BST :)
because over here we're pretending it's summer
[07:16]
mattx86heh :) [07:17]
RandalSchwartzmy machine's on TAI... 34 seconds behind y'all. :)
damn leap seconds.
no wait... ahead of you.
heh heh

awyeahno
randal you're not on ignore, I'm at work right now ;)
So I can only pay a little attention to IRC.
But yeah, that's what I was asking
I have everything set to eastern so that logs match up, basically.

..... (idle for 24mn)
up_the_ironsJacobWilson: to clear up possible confusion -- we didn't put 8.1 on your VPS, we put the .ISO in the CD-ROM. It is your responsibility to install it. Or, we can give you the stock 8.0 image it came with [13:10]
nestait would appear to have 8.1 installed on it :)
with custom partitions
lol
anyhow it should be fine on that one, up_the_irons :)
I helped him out
[13:13]
up_the_ironsnesta: ah ok, i thought JacobWilson said "they" and meant me ;) [13:14]
nestaI wonder what he means myself soemtimes :-o
hehe
I _do_ wonder who did that install though.. 8.1 with custom partitions and no users added
hehe
[13:14]
awyeahSo I'm doing my first full tarsnap backup.
I think I'm going to start using it instead of what I'm doing today.
I like how I can have a key on my system that can ONLY write to tarsnap, and I can keep the key with full privileges somewhere else.

awyeahYeh
seems like it.
[14:03]
bob^^tarsnap is great [14:03]
awyeahIt's just, there's basically only a man page for it.
I've been spoiled so much the past few years because there's FAQs and HOWTOs for everything.
[14:03]
bob^^i found the website quite handy [14:04]
awyeahbasically, I'm just using the example to back up /
I figure if I ever totally crash, I could tarsnap -x to / and be good with it?
[14:04]
bob^^not entirely sure tbh - that sounds right
i'm only using it to back up a few bits of source code :)
[14:07]
***nakano_ is now known as nakano [14:11]
awyeahHm
I really should test that concept.
Does it run on Linux too?
Cause then I could fire up a VM on rackspace cloud to test it,
[14:13]
bob^^not sure tbh [14:15]
awyeahnot have to pay much. [14:15]
bob^^can't see why it wouldn't?
only used it on freebsd :)
[14:15]
