RandalSchwartz: yeah, I discovered it the hard way on my main desktop machine, had to download the ISO image on another machine, boot from it and use the fixit environment to get back a bootloader that knows zfs up_the_irons: this isn't twitter :P lol dxtr infrared: Huh okie okie, got my ports updated, now upgrading to 8.1-R, wheeeeee! awyeah: aw yeah. ehh heh I should do that on my box at home too. Yeah, I did mine the other night. Yeah, that 7.3 to 8.1's gonna be rough ;) Probably just kill the box and start over. Hahaha. Wow, FreeBSD got *lambasted* on slashdot. if you look at the comments about the 8.1 release. link? lol linux users. ah, got it http://bsd.slashdot.org/story/10/07/24/2229242/FreeBSD-81-Released I mean, if you're talking desktop usage - damn straight, freebsd is nearly unusable on the desktop. Especially if it's a laptop ;) Eh. I've rocked BSD on a desktop. But laptop, sure, it's a PITA. I'll be perfectly frank, I really do like Windows 7 on my desktop. FreeBSD... I have to screw with it too much just to be able to watch youtube and read email Because, let's be honest, that's about all anyone does on a computer anymore ;) What's wrong with FreeBSD on a laptop? I had no problems with it I have more problems with Linux D :D I've run it on a laptop -- that was years ago... I should see how much of my Eee PC works with the generic install. Honestly... my preference is FreeBSD for servers, and Ubuntu or Windows for desktops/laptops. I hate to be a fanboy, but Win7 really does just work. I run Debian on a laptop after struggling to get DisplayPort, suspend, wi-fi, and Webcam all working together under FreeBSD. I can't stand Linux as a culture or a pile of code, but I can admit that it let's me get things done. awyeah: Kind of opposite for me Nothing works as I want with Win7 i have the same view mike-burns :) mike-burns: I'm the same. I'd rather run BSD, but the hardware support (and usability on a laptop) is... eh... then again, I don't run linux on them either... when I can run linux on a laptop without losing 1hr+ of battery life as compared to windows, and with power-nazi settings on linux and the defaults on windows... then I'll consider doing it. :/ I am totally pleased with Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition on my MSI Wind. Everything works out of the box, no screwing around with anything. Replaced Netbook Gnome with Xmonad, and I'm off running. I can't ask for more. You could ask for some bacon? always better with bacon I can eat bacon straight out of the package It's that awesome uh... ewww that particular texture for me is gag inducing I can't eat fat on meat or oysters or anything that's that kind of slimy actually rules out most seafood :D I love fat I don't know why I love greasy food and fat on meat dxtr: srsly, you like fat on meat? I _can't stand_ fat on meat. A lot of my family can eat it, I just don't understand how... My girlfriend is like that "normal" people are like that ;) She cuts the fat off... And then hands it over to me :P I guess my arteries need fat :D The fat is the part that has taste. fat carries the flavor of foods, yes, but that doesn't mean I want to each a chunk of it. GARHGHGGHHGHG Haha dxtr: that's like, very unhealthy dude up_the_irons: Nothing like a clogged artery in the morning My lifestyle generally isn't healthy :) i c Eat way too much, drink way too much unhealthy stuff (beer and cola), sometimes I smoke But lately I've started kind of working out. Biking 1-2 times every day That's a start. ~2 hour trips \o But I guess I'm spending way too much time on IRC hey hello okay, rebooting for 8.1. Good luck! awyeah - ZFS on root? if so, do the extra step uh oh he may not come back :) zfs on root needs an extra step for freebsd-upgrade to 8.1 discovered this in vmware two days ago hehe I don't think he came back Woot! Okay, he did why the long delay? christ I need to fix my reverse DNS. BTW - up_the_irons - I noticed that you actually delegate the whois info with ARIN. Never seen a VPS provider that'll do that. Not that it really does anything other than put my name on the netblock... awyeah: well, /29 and larger blocks, by ARIN policy, must be SWIP'd. I guess I just follow the rules :) perhaps other VPS providers don't have their own IP range, so they haven't had to deal with ARIN. You know that could be it too. okie. Time for bed. hi up_the_irons
