be sure you add "gpart bootcode -b /boot/pmbr -p /boot/gptzfsboot -i 1 ad0" after the first upgrade, before the first reboot

yeah, if you don't do that, you get a "boot" prompt, which won't help because you no longer have a bootloader that knows zfs. :(
the upgrader conveniently removes it
shame 8.1 is the "stable" version, there's pretty much nothing in it I care about, but I'll still have to upgrade to keep support :/
