cmeiklejohn: up_the_irons: re: Eucalyptus
It's interesting.
Uhm, I didn't do any real extensive testing on performance, so I can't really speak on that.
However, the way I saw it was a good way to get your application and systems ready for EC2 deployment, before actually doing it.
I suppose that's the endgame anyway.

cmeiklejohn: Anyone seen slugging performance with OpenBSD 4.7?
up_the_irons: The 4.6 installs you were doing were just the generic MP kernel with mpbios disabled, right?
up_the_irons: cmeiklejohn: generic SP with mpbios disabled
cmeiklejohn: up_the_irons: Right, yeah. I typed MP but meant SP. I have SP installed.
Well, interesting.
toddf: why use MP if there is only one virtual cpu? it incurs extra overhead for no gain
cmeiklejohn: toddf: I typed the wrong thing -- I'm running SP.
Generic SP with mpbios disabled.
toddf: heh

twiggz: Hello.
I was just looking at your website. I am interested in an openbsd vps, provided that charybdis will compile on it. Can you tell me a bit about arpnetworks connection and peers?
I will settle for freebsd also.
infrared: i like it
:)
twiggz: Is it stable?
infrared: i've been a customer for a few months.. zero complaints
cmeiklejohn: No complaints.
twiggz: I run an irc network, running the parent ircd of this network....charybdis...i need to know if charybdis will compile on openbsd...if not...the freebsd vps will be more than sufficient.
infrared: ugh
packet magnets
twiggz: and how is the uptime?
nah, my irc network is no packet magnet...its small..and just for a few friends.
I also like to run a nexuiz deathmatch server.
mike-burns: I'm a long-time customer with one (and co-admining another) FreeBSD VPS.
twiggz: how soon can my order be set up?
mike-burns: The uptime has been great, with I think only one unscheduled downtime in the past half-year (or maybe year).
Orders are processed around midnight PST.
(At least, they were; up_the_irons are orders still processed nightly?)
twiggz: so my account information and vps should be set up by noon tomorrow? its 8pm CST here.
mike-burns: The best way to see if charybdis will run on OpenBSD is to install OpenBSD locally; that said, you can change your VPS as much as you want, basically whenever you want.
I can't make any time promises since I don't control that.
twiggz: i know it will run on freebsd so ill stick to the safe bet ;)
openbsd is just smaller....
mike-burns: You should ask for OpenBSD but request that the FreeBSD ISO be left in the "CD drive" so you can re-install easily.
twiggz: and better in some ways
i think imma do some googling and see if anyone else has compiled charybdis on openbsd.
but im definately getting that vps special...no matter what OS.
mike-burns: Right on.
up_the_irons: mike-burns: yes, nightly still; sometimes there is a delay and the order confirmation email still has "24 - 48 hours" accordingly
cmeiklejohn: twiggz: I'll check for you
twiggz: cmeiklejohn: check what friend?
mike-burns: up_the_irons: Excellent to know.
cmeiklejohn: twiggz: charybdis on obsd
twiggz: ah, thanks. Im googling myself.
I know nenolod...he maintains it on debian linux...thats what im currently running it on...on a corenetworks dedi that i help pay for..
but this guy is letting to many folks have root that dont know what they are doing
cmeiklejohn: twiggz: I'm compiling right now to verify...
twiggz: im running charybdis 3.1.3
up_the_irons: twiggz: so yeah, if you ordered today, it'll be ready for you by tomorrow
twiggz: awesome.
ordering now.
just going to wait and see if cmeiklejohn can get chary compiled on openbsd before i decide on the OS
up_the_irons: i'm actually approaching low stock again, but i have more hardware on order already; should be here within a week
mike-burns: Wow that sold out fast!
up_the_irons: mike-burns: there was a rush b/c i notified everyone on the pre-order list
mike-burns: the server was like 2/3 full in just a couple days
mike-burns: Ah, of course.

twiggz: stalker
jmad980: :)
cmeiklejohn: twiggz: it's not compiling.. haha. But, I think it's a amd64 issue, not a openbsd specific issue.
twiggz: hmm
cmeiklejohn: I could probably get it going, but I'm not spending anymore time investigating into it.
I would go freebsd.
twiggz: ill stick with the freebsd i386
:P
thanks for trying though friend.
im ordering now.
cmeiklejohn: as an aside, nice to see in a ircd: warning: strcpy() is almost always misused, please use strlcpy()
haha
mike-burns: Ha.
If that warning shows, then it almost certainly hasn't been tried on OpenBSD.
cmeiklejohn: Hahaha.
I mean, you could get it going, but it seems like something you just shouldn't be using to begin with ;)
But, that definitely would be one of the reasons it's not in ports.
twiggz: Apparently there are no openbsd servers on freenode?
lol
ircd-seven is not "that much" different from charybdis.
order placed.
cmeiklejohn: cool
***: heavysixer has quit IRC (Quit: heavysixer)
twiggz: you folks seem like cool peoples.
mike-burns: Aww, thanks!
twiggz: I used to use a corenetworks machine of my own and lease jails to folks to help pay for the box...
jails make decent vps imo
(freebsd jails)
Getting pissed with corenetworks and my partner in this box now though...so I hope you guys can do a bit better..

toddf: twiggz: I can haz happy
twiggz: in english?
toddf: you get more at arpnetworks with a VM than you typically get with most physical colos
remote video, console, reboot, soft poweroff, hard poweroff...
and a friggen /48 IPv6 subnet thrown in for good measure ;-)
twiggz: yes, i noticed the native ipv6, although i know noone that uses it...but it cant hurt to have.
toddf: ipv6.google.com has existed forever, and with the right v6 dns server, you can get all of google services with IPv6 addresses
but anyway, this is not #ipv6advocacy
I've idled here since I setup my VM roughly a year ago
have never seen major discontentment
some pplz have had slowness upon occasion, but that can happen if everyones cronjobs run at the same time on a given VM server, aka disk io and cpu suffer if everybody on a given VM server spikes at the same time, regardless of the VM tech *grin*
have seen very few discussions about that, and thats the worst thing I've seen mentioned
twiggz: i rarely use cron for anything.
im a hands on type of fellow.
toddf: unix has a nightly cronjob ;-)
twiggz: i _myself_ dont set up cronjobs
