[08:02] I'm un-accustomed to FreeBSD's bootloader, I know in OpenBSD you type at the 'boot>' prompt 'set tty com0' [08:03] a) is 'hit f12 before the prompt goes away on reboot' as I recall from conversations here, it may be a diferent f# but it should be a prompt on the screen [08:03] yeah, I've learned to hit f12 [08:03] that'll get the dvd to boot [08:03] I just need to know what to do net. :) [08:03] next. :) [08:04] surely freebsd has reams of docs about serial console installs [08:05] http://tinyurl.com/2g94tyf [08:09] Har. [08:09] let no one say there is not a sense of humor here. ;-) [08:12] so something was wedged with my VM, so hard that vnc did not work, and serial still does not [08:12] its booting blind on serial, whee [08:12] thank goodness for the 'hard shutdown' option, that did the trick [08:13] the serial installs presume that you can "edit your install floppies" [08:13] I'm trying to do a "start with VNC then migrate to serial" thing [08:13] that's why I'm asking if anyone here has done it [08:13] with all the buttons freebsd has I'm quite surprised they don't have a 'switch to serial' option in their bootloader [08:14] they might! [08:14] I'm so spoiled over in OpenBSD ;-) [08:14] the question is, I don't know where to look :( [08:43] *** 13WAA2XUS has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 248 seconds) [08:55] *** coil_ has joined #arpnetworks [08:55] *** coil_ is now known as Guest29302 [12:47] *** fink has joined #arpnetworks [13:16] *** coil is now known as Sheath [13:16] *** Guest29302 is now known as coil [13:17] *** coil is now known as Guest86729 [13:32] RandalSchwartz: I think if you hit '-D' at the boot prompt, it'll go into "dual" serial / video mode, so you'll get output on the serial [13:37] *** vtoms has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving.) [14:37] he's right about -D [14:37] personally, I prefer to set it (and -h) in /boot/config [14:37] er [14:37] /boot.config [14:37] where does the boot prompt show up? [14:38] it seems to go right to the menu [14:38] -Dh will send boot loader to serial too. [14:38] -D alone sends it to video [14:38] ... is my understanding. [14:40] on a (non-vps) machine, when it was running freebsd it was -Dh -S115200 in /boot.config, boot loader, prompts, console etc. all went to... well, both I think, but certainly serial too. [15:19] I thought you were talking about on an already-installed system./ [15:20] no [15:20] RandalSchwartz: VNC is still required to "see" the BIOS screen and hit F12 to boot from CD-ROM. From there, it's (obviously) OS-specific on how to redirect to serial. I'm actually not very familiar with doing it on FreeBSD; I'm more used to using OpenBSD over serial [15:20] yeah - that's why I was asking [15:20] so after I hit F12... then what [15:20] and boot from CD [15:20] and use option 6 [15:20] and now I'm at "ok" [15:20] RandalSchwartz: at the FreeBSD boot loader prompt, just type "-Dh" then [enter]. I think that'll do it [15:20] can I get from there to talking to the console ? [15:21] how do I get to the boot loader prompt? [15:21] F12 immediately goes into booting [15:22] or rather, a menu. been a while since I tried [15:22] RandalSchwartz: at the menu, there should be a "drop to boot prompt" option, or something [15:22] although I *do* have a spare VPS I can try now [15:22] yes - that's the loader prompt [15:22] not the boot0 prompt [15:22] so I doubt it knows about -Dh [15:22] "man loader" vs "man boot" [15:22] different levels [15:23] this is where my eyes glaze over and I just boot up OpenBSD ;) [15:24] heh [15:24] let me try on mine test vM [15:27] RandalSchwartz: at "OK" prompt, type: set console="comconsole" [15:28] and bang, it'll output to serial [15:28] ahh. that's easy [15:28] thanks [15:28] if only there was some kind of place where this knowledge could be captured. [15:28] you won't even get any feedback, "OK" will just appear on the serial now [15:28] something anyone could edit. :) [15:28] and maybe associated with ARP [15:29] yeah i still want to set up moinmoin and make wiki.arpnetworks.com or something [15:29] what about the semi-official existing one?
