RandalSchwartz: up_the_irons?
nesta: hey RandalSchwartz
RandalSchwartz: hey nesta
arenlor: Hello Randal
RandalSchwartz: hey arenlor
insightcruises.com has decided to get off EC2 entirely
just ordered a second machine at ARP
arenlor: Are they taking orders again?
RandalSchwartz: they've always taken orders
it's just that there's a waiting list

amdprophet: anyone seen up_the_irons? got an emergency
emailed support already
arenlor: Nope sorry, maybe one of us can help?
amdprophet: need a new iso downloaded and mounted, ZFS took a dump on us
:(
arenlor: Nice, can't you use the console to mount an iso?
amdprophet: I think garry needs to do it
we can't get into FreeBSD at all, won't get past the bootloader
arenlor: Well my console is not being very happy, otherwise I'd look, I thought I had seen an option to boot an iso in there.
amdprophet: i'll take a look
hmm great, i think my pubkey changed... hah
arenlor: That's the issue I'm having
Though I don't remember it changing ^_^'
amdprophet: same, i don't think i've regenerated it or formatted
arenlor: RandalSchwartz: You able to get in?

kangu: beer drinkers!
RandalSchwartz: get in?
arenlor: To the console
RandalSchwartz: not for the new box
apparently, I forgot to ask that the pubkey be assigned
I figured that'd just be automatic
arenlor: It may be that something happened to it
RandalSchwartz: no, it doesn't show up in the list of machines assigned to that pubkey
some button needs to be pushed :)
amdprophet - you can boot from the ISO... at least, I can
just press I think it's F12 during bootup
as in, use the VNC
arenlor: So how was YAPC?
RandalSchwartz: busy... and having my laptop crash didn't make it any easier
arenlor: Yeah, is it fixable?
RandalSchwartz: I don't know
taking it to genius bar tomorrow
I suspect a MoBo replacement
arenlor: That's lovely, well at least you can do that
RandalSchwartz: eh?
arenlor: my one laptop died, it's a dell, so I'd have to find the specific motherboard for it on ebay
RandalSchwartz: replacing a mobo means "leaving it with apple for a few weeks"
arenlor: Do you even get the same one back?
RandalSchwartz: it's hard to tell
generally, yes
arenlor: The one time I ever sent a computer in, I didn't get the same one back. It sort of freaked me out that they wouldn't tell you.
RandalSchwartz: that's why you're supposed to back up your data. :)
arenlor: I did, they sent back the same HDD in it
They replaced the shell and screen
RandalSchwartz: weird
arenlor: Yeah, but they didn't charge me so it's fine, but still just a little off-putting
You like the *BSDs right? Which one do you think would be best for a laptop?
RandalSchwartz: I don't know. I don't run BSD on my laptop
arenlor: I've only ever gotten laptops, don't know why.
RandalSchwartz: me too
and they run OSX just fine
why would I run something less than OSX on a mac laptop?
arenlor: I wish I could have ever afforded to get an Apple
RandalSchwartz: afford? they're mostly on parity now
presuming you price the same setup
most people compare a stripped down machine against a full-featured apple. unfair.
arenlor: It's usually 100-200 more for the Apple
RandalSchwartz: the past days of "apple is overpriced" are long gone
arenlor: I generally can't afford the 100-200 extra
RandalSchwartz: well - you're getting seomthing for that price difference
maybe it's something you don't need then
but if you stack up feature for feature, I doubt there's a "$200 difference" at that point
arenlor: I'm not sure what the bonus of getting an Apple is truly
RandalSchwartz: I'm not following you
it's not because it's apple.
it's because it has more things
the apple brand is not what makes it more expensie
anyway, I gotta go figure out why this disk copy is taking forever.
arenlor: Have fun
-: RandalSchwartz wanders off
amdprophet: RandalSchwartz: i need to boot from a different iso though
RandalSchwartz: amdprophet - ahh, yeah, that's gonna require tech support
amdprophet: do you know if the number on the arp front page goes to garry?
RandalSchwartz: what iso do you have in there?
dunno
amdprophet: we've got the mfsbsd iso (modified freebsd 8.0 image for ZFS on root)
RandalSchwartz: probably a voicemail box
amdprophet: unfortunately we upgraded our ZFS version since the initial install and that disc doesn't support ZFS version 14
RandalSchwartz: eww.
you should be able to "burn" your own isos from inside the VPS. :)
and then the console would activate a virtual hand to insert/remove them
maybe something inside second life interface
amdprophet: hmm good idea
