up_the_irons: my vps is very slow from europe atm hm though ping is OK (<200ms) maybe everybody running their cronjobs in US timezone? most likely I'm a bit surprised that we haven't needed a scheduled reboot since december. How often does that happen? Maybe it's just planned for when we get migrated to the new data center looks like DNS has finished propagating to my new VPS setup. Time to shut off the old up_the_irons: Put in the request for my ARP, with links to the ISO i'd like to have loaded into the CD cedwards: ping Wraithan: pong cedwards: since up_the_irons gave the go ahead, I was curious what wiki software you were planning on using it I prefer dokuwiki s/it$/for it/ Don't they have funky syntax? I don't think so. supposed to be mostly compatible with mediawiki or moinmoin syntax. Ah ok Maybe it was a different one I was thinking about http://www.dokuwiki.org/syntax Yeah, looking at it now I think it's pretty simple syntax, but I maintain four dokuwiki installations so I've spent a lot of time with it. Let me know when you put it up, I'd be interested in helping populate it sure Hopefully I will be migrated to ARP soon I'm watching The IT Crowd on streaming Netflix. Even though I've seen these episodes a dozen times, they still crack me up! Never seen it hilarious. normally I don't "get" a lot of British comedy, but this really appeals to geeks. So British geeks are similar enough to us american geeks? this looks like it might have full episodes - http://www.sidereel.com/The_IT_Crowd it crwod is great new series coming soon RandalSchwartz: I'm excited for season 4! "have you turned it off and on again?" one of my favorites is the "Gay: A Gay Musical" episode. That suggests there are straight musicals.. Wraithan: you'll have to watch the episode to understand. It's hilarious. very gay musical well, assuming DNS has propagated, I give you http://arpwiki.com ..and bgpwiki and ospfwiki and.. I don't like that this isnot official I don't think I'll contribute to it RandalSchwartz: up_the_irons approved it, and if it ends up being useful and he has the time he plans on hosting it himself and making it official oh ok what do we need a wiki for to keep from repeating the same stuff over and over here +1 RandalSchwartz: I understand your concern about it being "unofficial", which is why I waited for up_the_irons to give his feedback first. I just think we've seen enough repeated questions that it'd be worthwhile for us to document them. and we all know how busy up_the_irons is, so a wiki allows us to provide support for him. I have contributed. dear arpnetworks: is there anyway to 'reinstall' the default chrooted apache1.x in obsd ? What is there to 'reinstall' if you want a default config there are lots of examples across the net o.o Wait, apache1? Well, looks like someone installed apache2 over what we had going on. I have missing files.. etc. People still use that? it comes out of the box in openbsd 4.5, afaik you should be able to rebuild it from source do you have an up to date /usr/src ? sure do. the source is in there somewhere you could start by blowing away the apache dirs just in case I am looking foward to migrating :/ What do you guys use for DNS... as I can't figure out namecheap's DNS stuff fxdomains Wraithan: Host your own, namecheap is ok but full-control is better :) I've never hosted my own DNS heh I guess I could figure it out Sure...however for 1 or 2 domains, the registrar is a tad easier I can't figure out how to use my registrar's stuff to point at my server Everydns.net was the bomb...however they are part of DynDNS now It seems my only options are to point at another name server, or if I select their hosted stuff, I don't see a why of setting my domain to point at my server Are they the nameservers you used? Maybe you have to use their Free DNS, I don't see a DNS setup area either I'm using afraid.org for my secondary DNS so far, so good I host my own ns1, ns2 and ns3. Wraithan: obsd forked apache forever ago. Nat_UB: yeah looks like it is the FreeDNS stuff I was using linode's before, I figured I should start the switch now for that sort of stuff, so it is just a matter of changing an IP when I get my server online Linodes DNS takes forever... Agreed If I host my own DNS do I just tell namecheap's DNS stuff my IP? You need to create a nameserver, where you tie the name to IP.. There is a separate section for that fuck me, I try to setup the DNS stuff on their free DNS stuff and it told me I can't put my domain on their free stff blah if you don't want to do it yourself and want something relatively quick/painless, zoneedit.com heh Finally found it 'All Host Records' Wraithan: no experience with bind/tiny/etc? or just don't want to bother with it yourself? is the name of the area you go to what the fuck cedwards: No experience with those, and I don't even know how I would point it at my server unless I can give a bare IP address for the name server stuff Wraithan: I use BIND (I know it's not the favorite around here) for my "core" domain. that has ns1.domain.org, which has populated zone files. Wraithan: when I register a domain someplace, I set the nameservers to ns1,ns2.domain.org, which then defines/provides the DNS information. Wraithan: if you want to spend the time to learn, I'm happy to help. Although all I know well enough to teach in BIND. That doesn't make any sense to me, how to do set them to ns1.domain.org when ns1.domain.org is providing the DNS for domain.org ? Well got the DNS working through their servers http://www.lessthanthreesoftware.com/ wooo for the record, I am not a sysadminy person... I know how to do the basics that is about it best way to become a "sysadminy" person is to do ;) Or ask the sysadmin at work if I buy him a 6pack of good beer if he will do the hard stuff for me lo I may do that for the DNS stuff, buy him some beer to get him to teach me how to do it i'd recommend buying a copy of DNS and BIND from o'reilly :) (even if you don't intend to ultimately use bind, it's still a fantastic book) I would like to migrate away from BIND at somepoint, but it is what I have the most experience with so I generally default to it. I'm also the DNS guy at work, and our setup is fairly complicated. At one point we had two masters and five slaves, plus forwards spread across three datacenters andin and out of DMZs. I'm sure there are more complicated setups, but I've since slimmed it down. complication is rarely secure or manageable. i do all our DNS in work too use BIND for everything though i'm looking at changing to something else for our recursive boxes (isp) that said we don't have any real problems with bind9 it's been great so far other than the constant stream of security issues and patches, it works great ;) BIND is like the sendmail of the DNS world. bob^^: consider powerdns, in spite of its stupid, stupid name. I'd like to learn tinydns better, but it hasn't been a priority so I am completely migrated from Linode (Debian stable, 64bit) to ARP (FreeBSD 8.0p2, 64bit) and I am using *half* the memory I was o.o jdoe: powerdns is the one i'm looking at :) bob^^: I've used it for exactly that (isp, recursor) ... although I used it for the auth dns as well. although split onto separate machines. looks like a nice product yeah it's pretty good... the only real problem is the lack of a decent interface. everything else just worked for me. trying to get management to sign off on new DNS servers at the moment :) We don't host much stuff at work, I have no clue what we use for DNS Our sysadmin is only 10 hours a week, and really I don't think we need him that much lol :) can someone remind me how to load a kernel module at boot, without recompiling my kernel with it added? (FreeBSD) /boot/loader.conf `man loader.conf' for the details. mike-burns: thank you does this look valid in /boot/loader.conf: accf_http_load="YES" (accf_http.ko) being the module. Looks right to me. thank you Hi all any service like this but on europe ? i would like another VPS with FreeBSD but in europe nbari: i'm in europe and use arp (UK) excellent service latency can be a little high (~100ms) but it's absolutely great I agree there is one based in germany who offer freebsd is just that i would like to set a small dns slave server but it's *not* cheap i use my arp for slave dns :) |o| same thing here :D :) i use algo yisp.nl ah - you want a slave DNS within europe? but nothing compared to ARP yes but would like the vps to be freebsd is it *just* for dns? yes currel currently runing on a centos how many domains? 400 ah was going to offer to slave a domain for you but some of them with a TTL of 60 struggling to remember the name of the german one atm gimme a sec :) thanks talking about colos any good ones on portugal ? not sure i'm afraid, really only know the UK :( how many domains are you looking to slave? 400 ok one of them is localhost.la currenlty with small VPS (128) ram and powerdns they have been working fine nbari: hang around - am asking in another channel :) thanks bob^^ currenlty i am trying a small vps with this guys: rackvm.com they will try to install FreeBSD nbari: got the name turns out they don't do VPS it's dedicated :( www.hetzner.co.za thanks, I will take a look also, they're south african but host in germany that'll be why i thought they were expensive :) if you get stuck please let me know - i know lots of people who can probably help you thanks so far i see only dedicated not vps yeah ... 21:11:35 < bob^^> turns out they don't do VPS 21:11:37 < bob^^> it's dedicated :( my bad :) np i know there's a few in the UK that offer VPS but they aren't anywhere near as feature-packed as ARP :( if i had a better colo box i'd offer you a jail thanks :D maybe we can convince up_the_irons the set up in the UK :) would be exelent :D it would :) see you arround I am going out for some food i could help him out with UK rack spac, full bgp transit and support :) laters :) Hmm How can I get my PUBLIC ssh key if I lost it? :P I still got my private one you can convert the private to public using ssh-keygen see -i no way. -y ssh-keygen -y will ask you wehere your private key is Right did that help Yes it did :) Awesome! Thanks Hrm. Kinda cold outside But warmer than it has been for a while though RandalSchwartz: Don't you dare leave me here! does anyone have any sysctl tuning options they'd like to share? (I'm particularly interested in those pertaining to web servers) cedwards: apache or nginx lighttpd k I'm going to crash. I'll add this for my list tomorrow. hello hello
