well that's not good. my host just hard locked. any VPS like this but in europe ? specially with FreeBSD this is not how I wanted to spend my saturday. anytime I upload a file (via WP) the machine seems to hard lock. I'm lazy, plus I host blogs for family so I like WP for being super easy. ips many vps can be ordered? but the strangest thing is I can replicate this hard-lock by simply uploading through WP. CRowen: rephrase the question please, I don't understand oh wooh looks like i got an account like a week before they sold out CRowen: beyond what is listed on the site simply requires proper reasoning. cedwards: Is this on your VPS? FreeBSD? lighttpd, per chance? so many ips can apply for a vps server cedwards, ok, thanks mhoran[jUaReZ]: FreeBSD with lighttpd. I've been running lighttpd on a Debian VPS for ~2yrs and have never seen this. CRowen: do you mean how many IPs can you get with a VPS? Yeah. It's a FreeBSD bug. You can order more ips additional apart from the vps that I have? cedwards: Add server.network-backend = "writev" to your config. mhoran[jUaReZ]: good call. i haven't done any tuning on this installation yet, and I do get a good deal of traffic. My blog gets very little traffic heh Yeah. It's goofy. I battled with the same problem for a while, box kept locking up and I had no idea why. Then I realized every time I uploaded a file in webmail, the server went down. :) looking at my old config, I did have quite a bit of tuning added. let me try these options and see where it getsm e. Good luck! I hope that did the trick. almost afraid to test it lol cedwards: I hear ya. you'd think they could make a setting like that a default in ports. I'm glad you mentioned something, or I'd still be puzzled. I was only using ~100M mem.. The network backend that it autodetects is there, but broken for some reason. Last time I checked there was little to no activity towards getting it fixed. how did you track it down? do/did those errors get logged anywhere? No logs. It was tough, because most of the time it worked -- but sometimes there was a threshold that I'd pass, and the machine would lock up. I think I just searched diligently for FreeBSD lighttpd file upload lockups. and it looks like, on my old config, that I did define the backend explicitly. perhaps that's why I never ran into it there. Ah, interesting. I think it does work on Linux, though. Just whatever it autodetects on FreeBSD is busted. how many of these suggestions have you done? http://redmine.lighttpd.net/wiki/1/Docs:Performance It's busted on my VPS, which is 7.2. Was also busted in 6.2. What are you running it on? can you comment on the kldload suggestion near the bottom? I'm on 8.0p2 I've my event-handler set to freebsd-kqueue. That's pretty much it. No harm in turning on the accept filter, I'd go ahead and load that up. not sure I understand what that is supposed to do, but if it's suggested... man accf_filter -- basically keeps junk clients from clogging up lighttpd threads until a full request is received. Pretty nifty. again, I think it's reasons like this that ARP community could really benefit from a wiki! Yeah, I think the wiki would be a great idea. up_the_irons: ping But IRC is a start. :) for sure I've brought it up a few times, and I still think it is a good idea. I'd like to have (un)official approval from up_the_irons before I do anything though. I'd be happy to host it even, if that's an issue. I just don't want to create one, on one of my domains and have it disconnected/unofficial, ya know. is there anything better than top for monitoring on FreeBSD? On Linux I've grown to appreciate htop.. cedwards: http://www.freebsdsoftware.org/sysutils/htop.html Wraithan: I've installed that before, but it requires the full linux_base stuff.. I was hoping for something a little more.. native. Ah ok, didn't know man I really should have thought about lowering the TTL on my DNS server prior to this migration. I'm going to have to wait at least 86400 for most things to update :( yep. mhoran[jUaReZ]: ping quiet. LOUD ;) cedwards: i don't mind if you host an unofficial wiki if it ends up being useful and i find the time, we can migrate it to something I host and make it "official"
