I have sent two yesterday with no responce at all.
cedwards: aem: i sent one yesterday and got a response by evening.
aem: spam filter?
aem: nah, its not in there

cedwards: what do the admins think about setting up a VPS wiki? I'm sure that'd be beneficial (and ease up the support requests).
homosaur: wiki wiki
dxtr: cedwards: Actually I think most people who get a vps here knows what they are doing .P
RandalSchwartz: it would be nice to share discoveries though
aem: thats what you think!
lol
RandalSchwartz: other than by sitting in IRC
aem: I think its a great idea cedwards
cedwards: dxtr: I think that is the idea, but we've had plenty of support requests and troubleshoot conversations.
dxtr: while it is aimed at skilled users, I think it'd be helpful to share common things we've seen so far.
dxtr: cedwards: "Today I saw a tree"
cedwards: you know what i mean
fink: cedwards: i think it's a good idea
RandalSchwartz: i think i found out what was locking me out
RandalSchwartz: what?
fink: on boot, member:openvpn starts after pf; my pf.conf refers to tun0, but pf can't find that interface, so it can't parse its config file, so i get this error: pfctl: Syntax error in config file: pf rules not loaded; which results in me being locked out after boot
-member
RandalSchwartz: eww. that may be my situation too
so what's the workaround?
yeah - I refer to tun0 in my pf too
fink: RandalSchwartz: just tried rc.conf's cloned_interfaces, that didn't work
i'm going to try /boot/loader.conf
dxtr: So... How's life guys?
And old man RandalSchwartz ofcourse
aem: hehe
pretty good dxtr
dxtr: No plans of getting doomsday drunk or something tonight?
RandalSchwartz: Hmm. I had no problem restarting pf with no tun0 device
fink: RandalSchwartz: maybe it's this pf rule of mine: `pass inet proto $int_proto from { lo, $localnet, $vpn_if } to any`
dmesg says: ,o IP address found for tun0:network, /etc/pf.conf:148: could not parse host specification
RandalSchwartz: hmm. I don't have one of those
fink: that should be "no"
RandalSchwartz: btw thanks for your help the other day
RandalSchwartz: got it! i wrapped the 'tun' in pf.conf with parentheses : ( tun ), or more specifically: ( $vpn_if )
-: fink celebrates
homosaur: hey, i'm having trouble sending function keys to my server on VNC. i'm on a macbook. I know I must be messing up the key combos for function keys
anyone have an idea
fink: homosaur: what's your vpn client?
cedwards: i haven't tried vnc on my mac, sorry.
homosaur: using chicken of vnc
RandalSchwartz: aha - there ya go
fink: homosaur: i had trouble with chicken too, which i like
try jollysfastvnc
homosaur: fink: okay, taking a look

homosaur: fink: i could never figure out how to enter a password
fink: homosaur: a password for what?
jolly allows you to paste as text into the vnc window
homosaur: fink: the vnc server. there is a box for it on chicken
fink: homosaur: it asks you for a password after you click connect
homosaur: it's ok, i have 'duh' moments too ;)
ok, it's outside time!
homosaur: fink: i don't know then, it just isn't working
fink: oh i see, you have to activate the software
fink: homosaur: free activation
homosaur: fink: yep, it sure worked
dang, i really wish i could figure out what is going on with chicken. i sure would like to not have to pay $40 for a vnc client
oh i guess jollysfastvnc is optional pay. i guess i will use it for a couple of weeks and i'll send some cash if i find that i'm using it

cedwards: broke down and just placed my order for my second machine.
aem: heheh
I was thinmking of getting an openbsd one
RandalSchwartz: "you can't eat just one" :)
cedwards: aem: I installed openbsd at work in my lab yesterday. Seemed to me like a less user-friendly version of freebsd.
..along with some odd security claims.
RandalSchwartz: theo's paranoia helped me sleep at night for 8 years :)
but having made the jump recently to freebsd, I'm not looking back
aem: cedwards: yeah but for some reason I like it ;-/
cedwards: I may continue to play with it in my lab, but I don't expect to move any production services to it.
this second one will likely replace my Debian stable Linode, putting all but my home mail server on FreeBSD.
DaCa: cedwards: but only openbsd has opensmtpd :)

mick_laptop: up_the_irons: hey, just wanted to know if there is a way to see the status of a new VPS
up_the_irons: mick_laptop: not really
mick_laptop: a friend that i recommended just bought one today, wanted to know if I could help him set it up today, or tomorrow
i think it takes ~1 day
up_the_irons: mick_laptop: yeah i'll most likely do all orders today / tonight; i slept a lot last night (sorry to those two had open support requests that I didn't get to), so I'll be up all night tonight working :)
aem: hey up_the_irons thanks for setting my PTR but I kinda messsed up, meant for it to be rip. in front of it.. whenever ya have a minute :)
up_the_irons: aem: just reply to the threat... or i'll get confused :)

aem: how is ipv6 reverse dns done with arp?
up_the_irons: http://support.arpnetworks.com/faqs/main/reverse-dns
aem: yeah I read that
then I googled ipv6 reverse dns and read lots of pages
;-/
noob stylez
up_the_irons: cedwards: regarding a wiki; i generally see it as another thing to have to maintain (spam, etc...), although I like the idea of sharing knowledge. i'm a little partial toward wiki's (in a bad way) b/c I've seen so many that suck. lots of un-curated information by people that can't write, is kinda worse than no info at all
aem: ipv6 is a big subject :)
aem: hehe I bet
its pretty daunting to me alright :P
up_the_irons: i'm still reading RFCs on it...
aem: yeah I read the RFC :-(
will read again heh
up_the_irons: would I be using a tunnel broker? am I on the righ track? hehe
RandalSchwartz: you don't need a tunnel broker
not for the VPS box
aem: okay hmm
back to square one
damn
-: aem snaps fingers
amdprophet: up_the_irons: we're going to beat you in the playoffs ;)
RandalSchwartz: the vps box has ipv6 already allocated
the allocation is listed on your portal page
if you're running a nameserver, you can have the entire reverse delegated to you, or you can ask for just a few specific reverses.
in that sense it's just like v4.
-: RandalSchwartz wonders if any of that helped. )
aem: ah great
***: ziyourenxiang has joined #arpnetworks
aem: thank you
I wonder how many ipv6 reverse is acceptable
I will email and ask :)
cheers RandalSchwartz
-: RandalSchwartz bows
RandalSchwartz hits head on desk
RandalSchwartz: ouch!
well - if you're gonna do more than a few, you should just man-up and take the delegation. :)
aem: yes that means learning how to run a DNS server right? (fear)
lol
RandalSchwartz: it's not that hard
the tricky part is finding a willing secondary
aem: someone told me that I can run dns from my own vps for myself, but thats rubbish right? it must be a seperate machine eh?
ziyourenxiang: no & no
up_the_irons: amdprophet: :)
amdprophet: :P
up_the_irons: aem: no tunnel broker needed on the vps
homosaur: hey guys, i'm new with dealing with mail and i wanted to know what is the least amount of software i can run to send mails out from the server. i do not need to receive mail at this server
RandalSchwartz: the default sendmail will do that
but I'd put postfix on, just in case
more options, especially for throttling
up_the_irons: aem: you can run a dns server on the vps itself, but usually people do it on another box for increased reliability
RandalSchwartz: and you'll still need to find a geographically diverse secondary
ziyourenxiang: up_the_irons, you make it sound as if the vps is not reliable :-)
homosaur: RandalSchwartz: postfix, gotcha. that's what i figured i should use
up_the_irons: ziyourenxiang: i know, i was afraid it might sound that way ;)
aem: ok
cheers for the info guys

cedwards: homosaur: If you just want outbound email from the server(s) for things like reports I stick with regular, default sendmail.
homosaur: if you're going to allow connections from the outside world, postfix is much better.
fink: postfix wins on security
cedwards: definitely. but if its just bound to localhost so the machine can report to you, I don't worry about it.
