I get tons of "Your one year closer to death now!"-comments
Other than that? Not much
Maybe a hundred bucks or two from my grandmother
o/
[06:48]
RandalSchwartzI started measuring my age in hex again

dxtrFor obvious reasons [06:55]
RandalSchwartzyeah - try to find a phone that fits that modem now [06:55]
dxtrAnd RandalSchwartz. To be fair; answering machines never became huge in Sweden as far as I know [06:55]
cedwardscan anyone tell me how to resolve this: pkg_delete: corrupted record (pkgdep line without argument), ignoring
I'm trying to resolve some issues with 'portmaster --check-depends', but I see that when adding/removing ports.
[06:55]
RandalSchwartzthere's a pkgdep fix up command somewhere
I've seen it referenced
it goes out and rebuilds by looking t the actual filesystem

aemI just reset my damn password and locked myself out of my vps bob^^
lol
total noob status right now :-(
[07:27]
bob^^lol
what os? you could reboot and single-user it and change the password
[07:28]
aemraging right now
hahah
FreeBSD
[07:28]
bob^^easy fix thanks to the vnc access
oh, easy then :)
root password you've lost?
[07:28]
aemI cannot seem to get my damn vnc to work, what client do you use bob^^ ? I am on a mac rihgt now too :/
nah root shsould be fine
user i created
[07:28]
bob^^don't forget the port number
that's normally what i forget
i just use realvnc, works great
[07:29]
cedwardsi use tightvnc. worked fine for recovery a few days ago. [07:29]
bob^^you don't even need to single user it then either [07:29]
***vtoms has joined #arpnetworks [07:29]
bob^^just log in over vnc with root and reset it :) [07:29]
aemok i will try tight vnc
thanks guys
[07:30]
bob^^oh on mac
i used to use Chicken of the VNC
worked great with everything i needed at the time
ah - looks like it might be a bit outdated these days
[07:30]
aemyou use host:portnumber
right
[07:31]
bob^^yup, that's it in realvnc
any luck?
[07:31]
aemnah
they won't let me add user root
i will keep fiddlin
[07:39]
bob^^huh?
you don't need to add user root
you should have a root account already
bob^^ is confused
[07:39]
aemyeh i do, I mean the vnc [07:40]
bob^^hmm, you shouldn't need a username for vnc
just the password from your ARP portal account
then you should see the root login prompt for your VPS
[07:40]
aemoh
hehe
hmm
kk
[07:40]
bob^^log in as root, passwd <your username> [07:41]
aemsorry
lol
[07:41]

:/
[07:43]
bob^^bob^^ fetches scooby snacks [07:43]
aemeeek [07:43]
bob^^nah
easy fix
reboot box, select single user mode at the menu
[07:43]
aemk [07:43]
bob^^(or, if you don't have a menu, enter 'boot -s' at the loader prompt)
that'll take you in to single user mode - it'll log you in as root without asking for a password
then you can just type 'passwd', hit enter, enter new root password and reboot
[07:43]
aemi am at login prompt [07:44]
bob^^all done :) [07:44]
aemhow to make it reboot from here? [07:44]
bob^^'reboot'
:D
oh wait
you can't log in as root, can yuo?
[07:44]
aembut its at a log in prompt hehe
nope
[07:44]
bob^^d'oh :) [07:45]
aemyeh lol [07:45]
bob^^in which case, you'll need to power cycle it
you can do that from the ARP portal iirc
[07:45]
aemyep
stay logged in on vnc?
[07:45]
bob^^just keep an eye on VNC as it'll boot pretty quick :)
yeah
as soon as you see the freebsd boot menu, hit the number for single user mode - i can't remember off hand what number it is
http://files.cyberciti.biz/uploads/faq/2009/11/freebsd-boot.png
[07:45]
aemyep [07:46]
bob^^option 3 :)
d'og
lol, d'oh, useless fingers
option 4 even
[07:46]
aemhehe
shut down hard?
'boot' did nothing
[07:46]
bob^^yeah, that'll do you
you can shut down hard and then power on
should do the same job
just be prepared to wait for it to run a full fsck when it comes back up in multi user mode
(does it in the background so you may not even notice tbh)
[07:47]
aemvnc disconnected
won't allow me to reconnect
[07:48]
bob^^that's ok - just reconnect as soon as you power it back on [07:48]
aemoh i power it on too
lol
gosh
[07:48]
bob^^:D [07:48]
aemA NEW WORLD HERE
:P
thnx man
[07:48]

[07:51]
bob^^ah cool [07:51]
aemrestting passes
gave me a pam error tho
[07:51]
bob^^hmm [07:51]
aemshould be cool i HOPE
:)
heh
[07:51]
bob^^what's the error?
i'm wondering if something naughty has happened to your password file
[07:51]
aempam_chauthtok() : error in service module [07:51]
bob^^don't reboot it yet
and what command did you run to get that? just 'passwd' ?
[07:52]
aemI doubt it man, I only just got this and the passwords I reset to earlier were really long and full of odd chars
yes just passwd
[07:52]
bob^^do a 'cat /etc/passwd'
and make sure you don't have two root accounts or something daft
root should be on one line, the first line in the file, and nowhere else
hang on - that should be cat /etc/master.passwd, sorry
actually, check for any duplicate users at all
there should be one row per user, and usernames should all be unique
chances are you've somehow ended up with two identical usernames in that file
[07:52]
***steinberg has joined #arpnetworks [07:56]
aemsorry got disconnected there
lemme see
bob^^: do you know is direct root login blocked by default on FreeBSD vps
?
[07:58]
RandalSchwartzI think it's blocked by default in ssh, but not console
that's how freebsd comes loaded
[08:01]
aemok
thought so too
[08:03]
bob^^yeah - you can enable root login over ssh, but it's generally a Bad Idea (tm) [08:05]
***ziyourenxiang has quit IRC (Quit: ziyourenxiang) [08:07]

aemnah man sam pam crap
I booted to single user set new pass with passwd
no dice
[08:12]
bob^^did you check master.passwd for duplicate users? [08:12]
aemmy vnc frose when i catted it
had to reboot
heh
[08:12]
bob^^i'd offer to take a look for you if you'll trust me with your vnc password :D
bizarre
hmm
that pam error means it hasn't updated the password database so that's why you can't log in
are you ok with using vi?
[08:12]
aemright
yes
[08:13]
bob^^ah, cool
use vipw then
[08:13]
aemyes hehe
kk
in single user?
[08:13]
bob^^that shouldn't cause it to flip out ninja stylee
yeah
[08:13]
aemawesome [08:13]
bob^^just check that you don't have a username twice (any username)
all the google for that message suggests that there's something wrong with the format of master.passwd
[08:13]
aemhm yes
:-/
eeek
lol
no worries
[08:14]
bob^^it'll be easily fixed :) [08:15]
aemyep
:)
hehe bob^^
pw_temp(): Read only filesystem
[08:15]
bob^^?! [08:16]
aem:O [08:16]
bob^^buhhh
oh
that should be safe to ignore
[08:16]
aemit will not let me open vipw [08:16]
bob^^it'll just be vi making a backup copy of the file which it doesn't really need
oh
hmm, sec
lol
[08:17]
aemyeah its mounted ro i guess [08:17]
bob^^yaeh, i can't think why /tmp would be mounted ro [08:17]
aemI wonder when up_the_irons will awaken
:)
[08:18]
bob^^you're not using zfs or anything fancy are you? [08:18]
aemnope
this is pretty much b rand new vps
[08:18]
bob^^i suspect the only solution he'll be able to help with is reinstalling it from scratch for you :( [08:18]
aemi had just csup'd new source to build with
:-/
[08:18]
bob^^i don't mind taking a look if you fire over your vnc details
and you're happy to trust me of course :)
understandable if not
bob^^ looks shiftily around
[08:18]
aemwell yes
:)
you understand
hehe
hmm
no worries
[08:19]
bob^^it does sound a bit odd
if it helps i'm a freebsd sysadmin all day every day :)
[08:19]
aemall i did was change my passes [08:19]
bob^^yes, that is pretty bizarre
you didn't change any shells did you?
[08:19]
aemnah
added a user with csh
[08:19]
bob^^i've typo'd shells in master.passwd before and ended up in a similar state
pw user add or adduser?
[08:20]
aemthats it
adduser
[08:20]
bob^^it should def have got it right
bob^^ scratches head
you could try pwd_mkdb /etc/passwd
to regenerate the password databases in case somehow they've become knackered
would be pretty odd though
at the very least that might spit out an error if there's a problem with the format of your password file
[08:20]

hey does anyone know which CPU model are used in the FreeVSD vps? I want to specify it in /etc/make.conf [10:51]
cedwardsaem: I use -march=native [10:51]
RandalSchwartzsysctl does [10:51]
cedwardsaem: or sysctl -a | grep hw. ...something. [10:51]
aemcool thanks [10:52]
RandalSchwartzamd64
hw.machine
dunno how much more specific you want
[10:52]
aem# (AMD CPUs) opteron athlon64 athlon-mp athlon-xp athlon-4
# athlon-tbird athlon k8 k6-3 k6-2 k6 k5
just wondering if I could specify one of these
[10:52]
RandalSchwartzprobably not without possibly breaking something
I don't see any of those names in sysctl
[10:53]
aemok, so perhaps native is the best idea
well its a k8 type, I have ascertained that much
[10:53]
RandalSchwartz... hw.model: QEMU Virtual CPU version 0.9.1 [10:53]
aemyeh
I will use native so as not to break anything
[10:53]
mike-burnsWhy are you setting this? [10:54]
aemwell when I build kernel and world I like the idea of it being tweaked a lil for the sytem
probably does not do much
;-/
[10:55]

anyone else ehere running a custom kernel on a FreeBSD vps with arp?
I compile from fresh source yet the uname -a does not say -p2 ?
:-/
the kernel name, although, is correct
[16:04]
cedwardsaem: what -supfile did you use for /usr/src?
(if any)
stable-supfile will stay on 8.0, standard-supfile should get you to -p2
[16:13]
aemhi cedwards check this out
http://pastebin.com/YbRgvy8J
thats my csup file
[16:15]
cedwardshmm. that looks right to me.
that's the common thing I've seen before, is not using the right branch for /usr/src
uhm, isn't there also a setting in your kernel config to display/not display that -p2?
I seem to remember there being one, but I generally don't go custom on my kernels
[16:16]
aemyeh might be, I did not twiddle that knob tho
the only thing 'custom' about it is having pf in it and a diff kern name
[16:18]

up_the_ironsyeah it's been around for a while; i had never heard of it either, but some people i consider very knowledgable told me about it [18:59]
cedwardsi manage DNS for a small number of domains, currently using named from FreeBSD ports.
I wonder if it might be worth migrating.
[18:59]
up_the_ironsit's pretty easy to migrate b/c the zone file syntax is the same [19:00]
visininwhich one is this, maradns? [19:00]
up_the_ironsjust the master nsd.conf needs to be tweaked, and they have a perl script for that (which didn't work very well for me)
visinin: nsd
[19:00]
RandalSchwartzI've heard of nsd.. is it better than bind for an average user? [19:03]
cedwardsthe old school guys at my office are big fans of tiny (djbdns), but i've never been convinced to migrate to that. [19:04]
RandalSchwartzI can't migrate to anything he does :)
on principle
[19:05]
visinini'm quite happy with djbdns [19:05]
ziyourenxiangdjbdns works fine for me too [19:05]
cedwardswe still use it for a couple of domains, but those are going to be pulled into bind in the next month.
i would like to learn djbdns, but it's not a big priority for me.
[19:06]
aemhi up_the_irons I emailed my ssh key to you guys earlier [19:06]
cedwardsbut unbound looks appealing, particularly the zone file compatibility. [19:06]
RandalSchwartzyou guys, like there's more than one of him :) [19:06]
up_the_ironsRandalSchwartz: nsd vs. bind is like postfix vs. sendmail. all the functionality, less suck
aem: pretty sure i got it, i'll have the user created a little later
[19:07]
RandalSchwartz"hey - steve martin... you guys were great..." [19:07]
aemnp man [19:07]
up_the_ironscedwards: you mean "nsd" :)
cedwards: unbound is the recursive-only version
[19:07]
ziyourenxiangunbound is a resolver
(according to its website)
[19:08]
cedwardsahh. details. pfft! ;)
I was happy to see that RHEL finally made postfix the default when I installed 6 beta today.
[19:08]
aemjust wondering up_the_irons about creating a PTR record(?) for a domain I have on the vps ? [19:08]
RandalSchwartzthat's covered in the faq [19:09]
aemok
thanls
[19:09]
RandalSchwartzyou can either give info to him, or delegate
either way, you can make it work
[19:09]
aemnp I will read [19:09]
up_the_ironsaem: http://support.arpnetworks.com/faqs/main/reverse-dns
whoa, i need one of those bots
so I can just do "! reverse dns"
[19:09]
aemhehe true man [19:10]
up_the_ironsand it'll say the link [19:10]
cedwardsgood plan [19:10]
up_the_ironsanyone know the name of that bot? [19:10]
cedwardsthe only irc bot i'm familiar with is eggdrop [19:10]
aemup_the_irons: its a tcl script usually [19:11]
RandalSchwartztcl - toy command language [19:11]
ziyourenxianghey, tcl is similar to smalltalk in spirit [19:11]
RandalSchwartzaka "almost like lisp, without any of the advantages" [19:12]
cedwardsI wonder if RandalSchwartz has a language bias.. hmmm. [19:12]
RandalSchwartzYes - I'm biased against things that suck [19:13]
***visinin has quit IRC (Quit: out for a bit) [19:14]
cedwardstell us how you really feel [19:17]
mike-burnsI'm going out out mhoran[jUaReZ] as a TCL programmer.
He's probably with his TCL-programming friends right now, but when he comes back he can talk about how secretly amazing TCL is.
