I'M ALIVE!
Well, I got 1000 SEK (140 USD) but I'm running kinda short again (Paid back some friends, bought some beer and a pizza yesterday and saved some for phone bills etc.)
But still
Anyhow, I'm about to order a VPS now! :D
Do I have to fill in a state? Because we don't have states the same way as in the US ***: amdprophet has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) bob^^: i think i left the state blank dxtr
or put your county/district dxtr: Yeah, I had to fill in a state
So I did :p
Hmm, 24-48 hour waiting time
So... I'll sit here and wait
I'm at school now ***: schmir has joined #arpnetworks dxtr: Okay, so like 23 hours to go bob^^: it's not an exact time dxtr :)
you'll get it when it's ready, and it's worth the wait dxtr: Hehe, yeah
But still :D

Most of it anyway .p mike-burns: Second-guess your decision of OS? DaCa: :) dxtr: :p
If I'm guessing right it's lunch over there right now
So.. I probably won't get that mail within an hour or so mike-burns: He normally does new stuff at night. toddf: dxtr: just so you know, provisioning happens at night, so if you didn't get it over last evening the next opportunity is tonight dxtr: Gah

ToastyX has joined #arpnetworks blovett: dxtr, 2-3 methods? You mean 2-3 different ways of declaring the records?
dxtr, example of how I do it. http://pastebin.com/UpiEdwm8 - it can be painful to setup the side that's delegated (so, arp in this case), but it's pretty easy for the end users. ***: amdprophet has joined #arpnetworks amdprophet: up_the_irons: still having level 3 issues?
er, level 3 still having issues *
half asleep... up_the_irons: amdprophet: not that i know of amdprophet: we're getting some really weird issues and it doesn't seem to be happening on our side up_the_irons: traceroutes? amdprophet: we're hosting a DNS server on our box and we've probably got like 30 domains or so, some people aren't able to resolve DNS for some of the domains at times but are able to ping the IP of our server, it happened on my phone today as well
I was able to resolve aelatis.com (our dns server) but wasn't able to resolve picgarage.net (a jail on the same box), but could ping both IPs
yet others could resolve picgarage.net, so i was thinking that there may be an issue between the root DNS servers and our box, perhaps some of the root DNS servers think our box is down due to level 3 route failure? up_the_irons: not sure why root dns would get involved... i mean, clients eventually ask your server for the resolution
root dns servers don't keep track of your box being up/down, they'll respond with what they know, either way amdprophet: ah alright, I wasn't 100% sure on how they worked up_the_irons: amdprophet: yeah, i don't think they'd come into play in this situation amdprophet: back to the drawing board and searching through logs up_the_irons: all in all, from what you have described, as you can imagine, there's a lot of things that could be going wrong, and it is hard to tell what
when you aren't able to resolve a domain, you could try a "dig +trace +<whatever other debug options you can find> <domain>"
to get a idea of what is going on amdprophet: hadn't thought of dig, thanks up_the_irons: np amdprophet: haha
i've got a friend that says he knows the building you're at (peer1 or something) up_the_irons: amdprophet: we're at 900 n. alameda, lots of big guys around here. verizon, activision, slide, etc...
i haven't seen peer1, they might be at one wilshire amdprophet: mmm activision, you should go trash their stuff for me :P
making me pay too much for map packs up_the_irons: LOL
amdprophet: they are in the cage next me.. if i trash their stuff, they might retaliate ;) amdprophet: do the ol' dog poop in bag trick and then laugh as their sys admins go crazy to put it out up_the_irons: haha amdprophet: just make sure not to trigger those poisonous fire extenguisher systems, i heard those are nasty up_the_irons: fm-200?
or haleon
*halon
(i forgot)
i think fm-200 replaced those amdprophet: i think haleon, that's what the london drugs datacentre has here
it's old school though, they're still running the old p3 netburst xeons up_the_irons: yeah
i think we should just have the system that sucks all the oxygen out of the room ;)
and hope no one is in it.... ;) amdprophet: rofl blovett: isn't halon illegal? up_the_irons: blovett: it may be now; replaced with fm-200 amdprophet: if i ever own a datacentre, i'm not going to bother with security guards... i'll have a robot that has a chainsaw and flamethrower... no one will ever mess with it ToastyX: weird
I can't resolve aelatis.com
so I'm digging through to see why amdprophet: ToastyX: thanks :) up_the_irons: security guards are half useless at most data centers ToastyX: but I don't see anything obviously wrong up_the_irons: resolves for me :) blovett: up_the_irons, they only seem to be there to annoy the people there. amdprophet: up_the_irons: sounds like the optimal job for the lazy person, eat donuts and watch security cams all day up_the_irons: $ host aelatis.com
aelatis.com has address 206.125.174.234
aelatis.com mail is handled by 100 mail.aelatis.com. blovett: especially at one wilshire.. :-/ up_the_irons: works from slicehost too blovett: I hate the one wilshire security guards. up_the_irons: blovett: yep
amdprophet: i catch them sleeping at times (when I come at like 3am) amdprophet: ROFL blovett: lol. amdprophet: dress up in a very cheaply made burglar costume... in fact dress up as the hamburgler up_the_irons: or playing their DS
i should tell them to get a PSP amdprophet: and tip toe into the datacentre up_the_irons: hahahaah
that'd be great amdprophet: when they review the security tapes they'd just be like WTF? ToastyX: amdprophet: what DNS software are you using amdprophet: pdns up_the_irons: wth
never even heard of it...
;) amdprophet: powerdns... lol
only using it for it's geo-ip capability and postgres backend blovett: amdprophet, my digs are saying that ns{1,2}.aelatis.com can't be found. up_the_irons: ah ok, i've heard of powerdns ToastyX: well it's acting strange amdprophet: blovett: that's... odd ToastyX: it's doing weird things blovett: but the tld servers have the A record for them. up_the_irons: same here:
$ host ns1.aelatis.com
Host ns1.aelatis.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) blovett: you have the ns1 and ns2 records on your side too? ToastyX: your servers WERE returning ns{1,2}.aelatis.com for a bit
then it stopped and returned NXDOMAIN blovett: oh, heh. amdprophet: well that could definitely be an issue up_the_irons: amdprophet: from slicehost: http://pastebin.com/4uDMa5B1 amdprophet: thanks, the A records seem to be missing up_the_irons: amdprophet: maybe the people that _can_ resolve your domains have ns1/ns2 cached amdprophet: gotta love disappearing records... going to have to talk to my coworkers :P
thanks for the help guys up_the_irons: np!
amdprophet: looks like you're gonna kill a sys admin today too! ToastyX: oh I see what happened
you have recursion on
so ns1/ns2 was there due to recursion getting the record from the gtld servers
then when I did dig -t NS ns1.aelatis.com, the cache disappeared amdprophet: ahhhh ToastyX: so really the records should be added so that won't happen amdprophet: just added them
should be all good now ToastyX: now it resolves amdprophet: I wonder if the border would be upset with me shipping everyone some Canadian beer
lol -: up_the_irons imagines a new RFC "On sending beer over the Internet" up_the_irons: imagine _that_ protocol amdprophet: LOL DaCa: amdprophet: I'll accept a 'fin du monde' by dcc :) amdprophet: lol ***: mart1n has quit IRC (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
