my freebsd vm becomes nearly totally unresponsive between LA time 3:10 am 3:15am
as in, just right then

my daily scripts don't run then, server uses UTC
no cronjobs or anything else, nor am I swapping
I'm beginning to wonder if arpnetworks does some rolling backups or somesuch and disk io is throttled thus vm's become unresponsive.. <-- theory only, no expectation of accuracy
that or vm's all run bsd flavors that set their daily scripts to run at the same time in the same timezone thus disk io goes through the roof, similar effect .. ?

hmm, at least on openbsd /var/log/<script>.out is saved as an easy refernece to the last run, daily, monthly, security, weekly ..
yeah, mine run from 03:00 UTC, as time is set to that
I think they musttake into account localtime, but I have never looked into it
'date' uses whatever timezone is set in /etc/localtime .. so does cron etc ..

so if your vm is truly set to UTC you'd have had it run 8.5hrs ago (or not)

I just found that I had the output on disk but the mta was improperly setup so I didn't get the mail

 /etc/crontab on freebsd has:
# Perform daily/weekly/monthly maintenance.
1       3       *       *       *       root    periodic daily
that's as close as I can get to 3:10
so maybe it is not that, as thing are fine before 3:10
depending on syslog.conf, /var/log/maillog may be some log file to check to see if your mail went out etc

again, "don't run" but "got an email" seems counterintuitive
either it ran or it didn't

and that it wasn;t just my vm running it's daily scripts during that time causing that
because, they do not run at LA time 3:10...

hi, when ordering a vps with arpnetworks, is it possible to provide my own image?
they attach custom cdroms, ask in the contrib notes; with serial console and vnc console surely you can download and dd your custom image.. ?
I did the dd custom image with 1and1.com, a physcal hosting provider, for a client .. so no reason it can't work with ARP ;-)
to wit, OpenBSD's bsd.rd has ftp and dd available... ;-0
you can provide a custom cdrom image for easy installation of your preferred setup also

only reason I want to use a custom install/image is because I want to use lvm
another customer did a custom install so they could have root on zfs with freebsd
I'll probably go for a debian or ubuntu install
