Arenlor: Hello all
ballen: hi
Arenlor: up_the_irons: Just wondering, did my order go through?
ballen: when did you place it
Arenlor: Yesterday morning
ballen: hmm usually he gets to it the next night
Arenlor: Yeah, hence why I want to make sure it actually got placed and didn't glitch up
ballen: well its all of 7:53 AM PST right now (Garry's timezone)
so he's def asleep
you may want to email support@arpnetworks.com
to open a ticket
he'll respond fairly quickly once he sees it
Arenlor: Alright
ballen: sorry about the delay on getting your VPS
likely hes either waiting for new hardware
or is back logged
or actually took the day off for the new years
Arenlor: Yep, not actually in any rush here, but if the order didn't go through it never will ^_^
ballen: yea
he really should setup some sort of automatic canned email when you put in the order
Arenlor: Which reminds me, I should find out if Singularity has updated recently
Nope still 0.30

up_the_irons: Arenlor: yeah, i got it; didn't drink any coffee last night and what do you know, i passed out ;)
toddf: Arlenor: where's the singularity meter?
Arenlor: toddf: Singularity is a game
up_the_irons: Ah, too much blood will do that to you.
up_the_irons: lol
toddf: oh I'm familiar with Singularity from Accelerando i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity
Arenlor: http://www.emhsoft.com/singularity/ singularity, one of the best games out there I feel
It's python, and GPL
toddf: oh, I've even played that
and won
on the easier level of course
Arenlor: Hard is the highest I've won.
toddf: once you win it gets boring quickly
Arenlor: Try the impossible setting.
toddf: I've quickly lost at that level
but its been maybe a year since I played that
Arenlor: Hard is the highest I've ever beat it on, so now I'm trying impossible.
It takes a whole new strategy.
I played the easiest mode for jokes once, beat it in less than 365 days.
It's odd that an automated email somehow reminded me of the game.
toddf: Do you know of any other games like it? I've played the whole Pandemic series (flash games)
toddf: konquest from kdegames seems roughly similar
I love to play that from time to time with all computers against me, can win about 70-80% of the time
Arenlor: cool, will have to try it, such a cool genre of games
Takes a lot of thinking, strategy and planning, but you also get a chance to sit back and watch what happens
toddf: well, rough is .. you conquer the galaxy taking planets at a time fighting with ships etc .. turn based game .. was fun one christmas with younger cousins
I've not quite found the ideal game, I'd like to find one where you more or less set an algorithm for your player and see what the outcome is, instead of having to do all sorts of manual timed actions
s/player/team/etc
Arenlor: I seem to remember a website that basically let you do that/required you do that
Hmm can't seem to find it on google.

up_the_irons: Arenlor: no, why?
Arenlor: up_the_irons: My temporary username. Just thought it could be related.
up_the_irons: Arenlor: is the key that you sent me an RSA or DSA key?
Arenlor: up_the_irons: RSA, thought I had that in the file name ^_^'
up_the_irons: nah, not in filename
i like mango's
Arenlor: Well crap, what did I add RSA to
up_the_irons: heh
Arenlor: ah, to the private key!
RandalSchwartz: so - first order of business.. how do I get a VNC console so I can install my OS
if there's a web page about it, I'll be happy to read
mike-burns: RandalSchwartz: The fastest way to get a response from up_the_irons is to email support@arpnetworks.com
RandalSchwartz: well - I'm asking if other customers might also know. :)
mike-burns: He has to create the server for you first.
Arenlor: RandalSchwartz VNC seems to be given in the portal.arpnetworks.com
If you go to your service detail
RandalSchwartz: I see now, yes.
now to see if I can get chickenofthevnc to connect
just beachballs. :(
and... timeout
ahh - forgot to subtract 5900 from the port
Arenlor: eh, you have to substract from the port?
RandalSchwartz: yeah
the VNC port in chicken is offset 5900
Arenlor: Some level of security through obscurity?
RandalSchwartz: because 5900-5999 are the traditional VNC ports
no
simpler than typing 5901 5902 etc
just 1 2 3
same way X11 is +6000
6001 6002
Arenlor: ah, so it's enabling, that's cool
RandalSchwartz: ok. now I need to know how to boot this machine off the CDROM
this would be easier if I had ever done this physically, I presume :)
I see a "login" prompt on the VNC console
-: RandalSchwartz googles "freebsd boot cdrom"
RandalSchwartz: ok - that sucks, when I said "shutdown hard" my VNC went away
crap - how do I send F12 through VNC?
lsdev from the boot interface doesn't show any live CDs
aha - got it to boot cdrom
figured out how to send F12
Arenlor: Mind if I ask how?
RandalSchwartz: I had F12 bound to "expose"
I had to disable that for a bit
Arenlor: Ah
up_the_irons: I'm happy.
Anyone who knows postgresql, can you tell me if the syntax for the VALID UNTIL timestamp is yyyy-mm-dd or yyyy-dd-mm
toddf: I'd presume that'd be locale dependent, but since it returns select dates by default as YYYY-MM-DD ..
jeev: openbsd is not good
;/
toddf: jeev: random statements are meaningless from you, I'm consistent, openbsd is great, .. ;-)
jeev: :>
toddf, excuse yourself.. any statement is meaningless from me.
Arenlor: cool, well I decided to be smart and set it to either March 1st or tomorrow.

up_the_irons: mhoran: indeed
RandalSchwartz: well - anyway, the instructions for how to make a root ZFS are *almost* correct, except for a couple of minor things
up_the_irons: 5 minute input rate 359076000 bits/sec, 34560 packets/sec
seems to have subsided
RandalSchwartz: and after spending two hours getting every step to at least have done something, when I boot now it says "cannot find any zfs partitions"
which is annoying
even though if I boot the cdroom again, I can mount and unmount that zfs
and it has *all* the right data
up_the_irons: RandalSchwartz: can it be done w/ the standard 8.0 IS?
*ISO
RandalSchwartz: in theory yes
that's how I was doing it
the trick is kldload /mumble/zfs.ko
so that the cdrom kernel can build a zfs tree
up_the_irons: RandalSchwartz: i've had a couple of reports that this helps: http://mfsbsd.vx.sk/
RandalSchwartz: i c
RandalSchwartz: I should probably get a freebsd inside vmware installed tonight too
and if I can get *that* to be zfs /, then I'll know it at least works somewhere. :)
up_the_irons: yup :)
-: RandalSchwartz downloads the iso
up_the_irons: _someone_ in here has ZFS on root, I just forgot who it was.. LOL
Arenlor: up_the_irons: So you up yet, or should I wait some more?
up_the_irons: Arenlor: things look fine now.
RandalSchwartz: which 8.0-release is that? livefs?
mounted on my machines/
or disk1?
or dvd1?
or memstick?
up_the_irons: RandalSchwartz: it's this: 8.0-RELEASE-amd64-dvd1.iso
RandalSchwartz: amd64?
those vm's look like amd64's ?
I wonder if that's why it failed
I was installing 32bit libs
because that's what the instructions said to do
up_the_irons: All my vm's are amd64, had problems with i386 and 7.2.
RandalSchwartz: ok
islandfox: up_the_irons: I've got zfs on root, but with a ufs boot partition
up_the_irons: islandfox: ah OK
RandalSchwartz: islandfox did it ^^ :)
toddf: islandfox: probably before 8.0 that can do zfs on root eh?
RandalSchwartz: ahh - with ufs
toddf: er well boot from zfs
islandfox: zfs boot seems kind of immature right now
RandalSchwartz: it was certainly persnickity to me
islandfox: toddf: no, it's a new 8-stable + -current zfs install
RandalSchwartz: so after boot, / is ZFS though
Arenlor: up_the_irons: How do I change the vnc and serial console passwords?
RandalSchwartz: it's just during boot, there's a transition?
toddf: sounds like he has kernel and boot blocks on ufs but rootfs on zfs
up_the_irons: Arenlor: you can't on your own; you can ask me to do it for you though
Arenlor: up_the_irons: Should I just email support?
RandalSchwartz: I'm gonna look at the zfsinstall script from mfsbsd
maybe there's a step that was left out of the instructions
islandfox: toddf: yes
toddf: up_the_irons: request .. let us change our passwords, and let us have an option to not see them when logging into the control panel..
RandalSchwartz: for example, they don't tell how to make the zpool.cache
Arenlor: Different slices for /boot and / it would seem?
RandalSchwartz: and they also don't say that you need to chflags noschg during install
otherwise it fails
up_the_irons: Arenlor: yup, if you feel comfortable. you can always put the password in a file on your vps and i'll login and copy it; then clear text password won't go over email; or use my gpg key (in the headers of all my emails)
islandfox: I'm using this setup, pretty much, and am quite happy with it: http://wiki.freebsd.org/ZFSOnRoot
up_the_irons: Arenlor: http://scie.nti.st/pubkey.asc
toddf: email me the request so i have it :)
i'm going to grab some food, I'll be on later

***: nukeAFK has joined #arpnetworks
RandalSchwartz: is there any way I could have that mfbsd .iso mounted on my machine?
toddf: up_the_irons: will do
randalschwartz: support@ is your ticket to magic tweaks like that typically, you missed up_the_irons by 19s unless he saw your request after he said he was leaving.. *grin*
RandalSchwartz: no worries
I presume that's just some vm setting
toddf: kvm == qemu in my mind wrt configuring it, cmdline tweak indeed
***: ballen is now known as ballen|away
toddf: I saw your video pasted here a few days back, indeed writing books with the traditional publishers tends to suck wrt income .. have a friend in the city here that self published a book, has his own block of ISBN codes, getting ready to start selling the audio version, too bad people flock to e.g. o'rilley etc otherwise self publishing could put the profit back in book writing ;-(
RandalSchwartz: well - *some* profit
toddf: (I was a `contributing editor' for `secure architectures with openbsd' aka wrote nearly all of 3 chapters, got $100 total, no expectation of more.. even though it continues to sell today)
Arenlor: Yeah, anyone who'd write for O'Reilly is just pure evil
RandalSchwartz: oh crap, I can't look inside mfsbsd because it has to be booted to unpack the root filesystem
and now my vmware wants to be upgraded to 3.0.1
damn yak shaving
Arenlor: RandalSchwartz: Just use Microsoft, then you wouldn't have to worry about that sort of thing.
RandalSchwartz: booting the mfsbsd disk
wow - that booted nicely, but it also wanted a distro alongsie to install
looks like there's also a "special edition" which provides a distro
