phew server that hosted my screen session started spewing a bunch of I/O errors oddly, a reboot seems to have fixed it... up_the_irons: do you run some ntp server? schmir: do you need a local time server for some reason? I just the OS defaults. sroute: I I set the timezone to UTC and the time was off.. just thought that it would be useful you might have to kick it once; are you running FreeBSD? If so: # Don't forget to enable ntpd in /etc/rc.conf with: # ntpd_enable="YES" I'm on archlinux Ok, well you are on your own then! Even my debian knowledge is getting rusty these days, just don't use it much. Perhaps someone else will join in. I used freebsd till 4.11 never tried 5.x 4 to 5 was somewhat painful although I didn't really have any issues. I'm actually running 8.0 on my vm here; 7.2 on my own hardware elsewhere. This seems straightforward if you've not already done so: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Network_Time_Protocol yes, thanks. I'll try running with my current setup. gonna try freebsd again some day I didn't mind debian but had only one box running linux and was happy to drop it for just that reason. Whateverone gets used to... ps on ntpd - might try running it in the foreground at least once, perhaps with the "-x" option, in case your time is seriously skewed. Can this channel be used for customer/sales questions? I'm sure it can but you are probably best off emailing Garry at ARP Networks. Most of us here are clients. He tends to show up in IRC later (late Pacific time) in the day. Garry's id here is up_the_irons sroute: how are you liking 8.0 so far? amdprophet: It's fine - from my perspective it's good ol' FreeBSD; I'm not using zfs or anything funky as yet. my coworker and I are loving it so far, seems a bit snappier than 7.2 ZFS is running great too I'll have to give zfs a try one of these days and play with some other backup strategies. sroute: we're tinkering with a ZFS backup tool called zfs-snapshot-mgmt (it's a ruby script within ports), we're re-writing a bit of it now because it has timezone issues but it seems to work pretty well uses the grandfather father son backup strategy with ZFS snapshots How long does it usually take for new VPS accounts? I signed up for an account last night. I still have not gotten any type of confirmation or acknowledgement email to even say, "Hey thanks for signing up, we'll let you know when things are ready". mart1n: usually 24 hours; provisioning is done at night (PST). yours is scheduled for provisioning tonight up_the_irons, good deal. Thanks! mart1n: np! amdprophet: Checkout https://labs.omniti.com/trac/zetaback for backing up ZFS that's a nice Trac setup they have yea pretty spiffy what's different? other then six images? bought it looks better though oops i fucked up permissions on my server ;/ opps now nothing works thats an issue whats the default perms for /home on fbsd apparently 700 broke it getting permission denied in my own home dir 755 thanks
