Rada: haha, what's #not-##freebsd ? ;)

srouteLOL nouptime.com love it
I especially like the support form! http://www.nouptime.com/support
The letter 'B' is not allowed for technical reasons.
sroute makes a note to write something like this and put it on line on April 1st.
might not warn clients LOL
[14:19]
up_the_ironssroute: the support form is the best [14:22]

***dja has joined #arpnetworks [16:57]
djaFreeBSD 8.0 not a choice yet? [16:59]
up_the_ironsdja: soon
dja: I'm making some templates tonight for testing
[17:01]
djaif I order now, and put in the "any other info" that I want freebsd 8.0 will that avoid me having to wait for the order page to be updated?
also whats the maximum number of cores a VPS can have? I assume 8 since you use dual 4 core xeons
[17:03]
up_the_ironsdja: yes, but it will also delay the order b/c 8.0 hasn't been fully tested; i imagine it will work fine, but i wouldn't want to sell something i haven't tested
dja: 8 is the max
[17:05]
djaok, well the tech I want is only available in 8-STABLE, so I will be updated from 8.0 to 8-STABLE anyway, just figured it would be easier than updating from 7.2 [17:06]
up_the_ironsyeah perhaps [17:08]
djaI assume theres no restrictions on what can run on the server, I didnt see anything in the acceptable use policy anyway [17:08]
up_the_ironsdja: no restrictions, just has to be legal [17:09]
djathats fine, I will eventually get 4 VPSs (if all goes well), starting with 2, 1 for dev, 1 for production.. hosting game and chat servers.. I know some providers dont like them [17:10]
srouteGarry is the vnc access to the console down?
up_the_irons: for some reason i can't connect; my vm isn't coming back up clean.
[17:10]
***ballen|away is now known as ballen [17:14]
up_the_ironsdja: games and chat? sounds like fun to me :) [17:14]
djayeah, for some reason another bsd vps provider wouldnt allow it, policy against chat servers :( [17:15]
up_the_ironssroute: no alerts. is it hanging upon connection? if so, you have it open somewhere else. to completely kill old connections, either find them on your end, or do a "Shutdown (hard)" from the console or portal, then subsequent "Boot"
dja: yeah, against IRC right? lots of providers have a stigma about that
rootbsd won't allow it
[17:15]
djayeah, we use IRC for the chat in the game
yeah rootbsd was who we originally were going with
[17:15]
up_the_ironscool
who else is there.. bsdvm, um...
not sure their policy
[17:15]
ballenup_the_irons: can DRBD do master to multi-slave replication [17:16]
up_the_ironsjohn companies, also dunno their policy. if u can get past their order form, you've accomplished something great ;) [17:16]
djaheh they were rather expensive IIRC [17:17]
up_the_ironsballen: it might in -current, definitely not in -stable
dja: yup
[17:17]
srouteup_the_irons: hmmn, back in. [17:17]
up_the_ironssroute: sweet [17:17]
ballenshaiat, know of anything that does that [17:17]
up_the_ironsballen: like multiple replication of block devices?
ballen: can iscsi do that?
[17:17]
ballenumm
not that i know of
want the data to live on each server
[17:18]
up_the_ironsnothing is coming to mind [17:18]
ballendoesn't have to be writable on each server though [17:18]
up_the_ironsyeah [17:18]
ballenhmm [17:18]
up_the_ironsballen: oh, AoE
just be ABSOLUTELY sure none of the slaves can write
oh wait, but...
[17:18]
ballenis there actually replication though?
or just mounted the same drive
[17:19]
up_the_ironsif the master doesn't always do a fsync, the slaves won't see changes right away, fail
ballen: yeah, would just mount the same drive.. so no....
[17:19]
ballenhmm damn [17:20]
up_the_ironsballen: but it kinda seems the replication factor and seeing the same disk on different nodes is kinda independent [17:20]
ballentrue
really only replication is needed
preferably "live"
[17:20]
srouteup_the_irons: you can ignore the last support thread msg I added; while I have not made a vnc connection in weeks (nothing open this side) it wasn't connecting; now both vnc and all regular services are. Strange, never seen that before. I have been noting some local network issues to a different path (central US); that may be at play here. [17:21]
up_the_ironsballen: drbd is the only thing i know for live replication of block devices
sroute: ah ok
[17:21]
sroutealthough if you peek at the note you'll see why it came down in the first place ;-) [17:22]
up_the_ironsup_the_irons peaks
sroute: don't ya hate it when that happens ;)
[17:22]
sroutefor sure. I run "make" in so many contexts all day long so that one just flew off my fingers without thinking.
Must be time for a beer.
[17:26]
ballenwhere the hell is my chapstick [17:27]
sroute??? [17:27]
ballen?
can't find it
lips are chapped
scratch that found it
[17:27]
sroutespeaking of searching for things... I just finished spending a heart-wrenching 45 minutes searching for my wallet; was just about to start calling credit card companies when I thought to look in my kid's pack and sure enough, it had slid in an open pocket when I took him to the doctors for an appointment this am.
So I really am going to crack a beer now and order pizza for the four pre-teen boys upstairs so I can get some work done.
[17:29]
ballenmmk [17:30]
sroutesroute is getting nervous, they are remarkably quiet right now [17:30]
ballenthey're plotting
or looking at playboys
[17:31]
srouteno playboys around here, pretty sure of that. They don't seem interested much in girls just yet. 9, 10, 11, 12 year olds; probably the 12 year olds will change that next year in grade 8. sigh. [17:33]
ballenah
hmm
yea don't remember what kinda crap I was getting into that young
I know shortly after that 14-15... was when I was getting myself into trouble
