up_the_irons: hycer: that link had me LOL'ing so hard
Rada: haha, what's #not-##freebsd ? ;)
sroute: LOL nouptime.com love it
I especially like the support form! http://www.nouptime.com/support
The letter 'B' is not allowed for technical reasons.
-: sroute makes a note to write something like this and put it on line on April 1st.
sroute: might not warn clients LOL
up_the_irons: sroute: the support form is the best
***: dja has joined #arpnetworks
dja: FreeBSD 8.0 not a choice yet?
up_the_irons: dja: soon
dja: I'm making some templates tonight for testing
dja: if I order now, and put in the "any other info" that I want freebsd 8.0 will that avoid me having to wait for the order page to be updated?
also whats the maximum number of cores a VPS can have? I assume 8 since you use dual 4 core xeons
up_the_irons: dja: yes, but it will also delay the order b/c 8.0 hasn't been fully tested; i imagine it will work fine, but i wouldn't want to sell something i haven't tested
dja: 8 is the max
dja: ok, well the tech I want is only available in 8-STABLE, so I will be updated from 8.0 to 8-STABLE anyway, just figured it would be easier than updating from 7.2
up_the_irons: yeah perhaps
dja: I assume theres no restrictions on what can run on the server, I didnt see anything in the acceptable use policy anyway
up_the_irons: dja: no restrictions, just has to be legal
dja: thats fine, I will eventually get 4 VPSs (if all goes well), starting with 2, 1 for dev, 1 for production.. hosting game and chat servers.. I know some providers dont like them
sroute: Garry is the vnc access to the console down?
up_the_irons: for some reason i can't connect; my vm isn't coming back up clean.
***: ballen|away is now known as ballen
up_the_irons: dja: games and chat? sounds like fun to me :)
dja: yeah, for some reason another bsd vps provider wouldnt allow it, policy against chat servers :(
up_the_irons: sroute: no alerts. is it hanging upon connection? if so, you have it open somewhere else. to completely kill old connections, either find them on your end, or do a "Shutdown (hard)" from the console or portal, then subsequent "Boot"
dja: yeah, against IRC right? lots of providers have a stigma about that
rootbsd won't allow it
dja: yeah, we use IRC for the chat in the game
yeah rootbsd was who we originally were going with
up_the_irons: cool
who else is there.. bsdvm, um...
not sure their policy
ballen: up_the_irons: can DRBD do master to multi-slave replication
up_the_irons: john companies, also dunno their policy. if u can get past their order form, you've accomplished something great ;)
dja: heh they were rather expensive IIRC
up_the_irons: ballen: it might in -current, definitely not in -stable
dja: yup
sroute: up_the_irons: hmmn, back in.
up_the_irons: sroute: sweet
ballen: shaiat, know of anything that does that
up_the_irons: ballen: like multiple replication of block devices?
ballen: can iscsi do that?
ballen: umm
not that i know of
want the data to live on each server
up_the_irons: nothing is coming to mind
ballen: doesn't have to be writable on each server though
up_the_irons: yeah
ballen: hmm
up_the_irons: ballen: oh, AoE
just be ABSOLUTELY sure none of the slaves can write
oh wait, but...
ballen: is there actually replication though?
or just mounted the same drive
up_the_irons: if the master doesn't always do a fsync, the slaves won't see changes right away, fail
ballen: yeah, would just mount the same drive.. so no....
ballen: hmm damn
up_the_irons: ballen: but it kinda seems the replication factor and seeing the same disk on different nodes is kinda independent
ballen: true
really only replication is needed
preferably "live"
sroute: up_the_irons: you can ignore the last support thread msg I added; while I have not made a vnc connection in weeks (nothing open this side) it wasn't connecting; now both vnc and all regular services are. Strange, never seen that before. I have been noting some local network issues to a different path (central US); that may be at play here.
up_the_irons: ballen: drbd is the only thing i know for live replication of block devices
sroute: ah ok
sroute: although if you peek at the note you'll see why it came down in the first place ;-)
-: up_the_irons peaks
up_the_irons: sroute: don't ya hate it when that happens ;)
sroute: for sure. I run "make" in so many contexts all day long so that one just flew off my fingers without thinking.
Must be time for a beer.
ballen: where the hell is my chapstick
sroute: ???
ballen: ?
can't find it
lips are chapped
scratch that found it
sroute: speaking of searching for things... I just finished spending a heart-wrenching 45 minutes searching for my wallet; was just about to start calling credit card companies when I thought to look in my kid's pack and sure enough, it had slid in an open pocket when I took him to the doctors for an appointment this am.
So I really am going to crack a beer now and order pizza for the four pre-teen boys upstairs so I can get some work done.
ballen: mmk
-: sroute is getting nervous, they are remarkably quiet right now
ballen: they're plotting
or looking at playboys
sroute: no playboys around here, pretty sure of that. They don't seem interested much in girls just yet. 9, 10, 11, 12 year olds; probably the 12 year olds will change that next year in grade 8. sigh.
ballen: ah
hmm
yea don't remember what kinda crap I was getting into that young
I know shortly after that 14-15... was when I was getting myself into trouble
