up_the_irons | i like openbsd, but sometimes i feel where they put their resources is widely misguided: http://www.opencvs.org/
come on, really, CVS? move to git already | [06:37] |
mhoran | CVS is the wave of the future. | [06:45] |

toddf | up_the_irons: opencvs is stalled, there has never been a ton of resources thrown at it, a sad thing, since it needs some polishing to be finished..
the reasoning for not moving to git is that git encourages the entire opposite development model cvs does not that I don't use git to track openbsd stuff privately *grin* but the project as a whole functions largely because everybody is encouraged to test things well, and throw it all into one tree everybody uses for testing | [09:20] |

sroute | sroute needs beer. | [11:58] |
up_the_irons | toddf: what development model would that be? | [11:58] |
toddf | up_the_irons: what I described above.. '-current must work, must be stable, everybody runs current' so if everybody is running the same code testing the same code more coverage for corner cases; imagine trying to get 50 different branches the same coverage as one mainline development tree.. | [11:59] |
ballen | up_the_irons: your monitor happy with toroa being up? | [12:00] |
up_the_irons | ballen: still shows down, gotta wait a couple mins for a re-check | [12:00] |
ballen | k | [12:00] |
up_the_irons | toddf: so openbsd guys don't branch? but either way, one doesn't *have* to have a lot of different branches, there are still so many things about git that make using version control so much nicer | [12:01] |
mike-burns | toddf: I think test coverage is a red herring in that argument. I do admit that something is lost in a move to a distributed version control system, but since the final release comes from only one of the forks the testing can still happen. | [12:02] |
toddf | mike: please tell me that you would only run one mainline tree if there were 50 different branches tantilizing you with features you might wish to play with
testers get split thin, in openbsd its all about quality engineering, which cannot be done with 50 splinter branches (50 is just a random number for arguments sake..) | [12:04] |
mhoran | Quality vs. quantity. | [12:05] |
mike-burns | toddf: As up_the_irons hinted at, isn't that the same problem as branching in CVS? | [12:05] |
mhoran | OpenBSD doesn't have nearly as many features as FreeBSD or Linux. | [12:05] |
toddf | features are not security.
quality and security come first above all else. but the other argument about features is buttons. you don't see a zillion buttons in openbsd. sane defaults prevail, making many lives easier. | [12:05] |
mike-burns | This is off-topic, though; git doesn't have to cause the issues you suggest it causes. | [12:06] |
mhoran | OpenBSD is useless on a four proc, quad core, 128 GB, 5 TB machine. | [12:07] |
mike-burns | We use git at work, all in one repo. We branch, but we branched in SVN too. | [12:07] |
up_the_irons | still, nothing about git _makes_ you branch; i often have trees with only the 'master' branch | [12:07] |
mhoran | Sometimes I need features to get my job done. If that comes before security, it doesn't matter -- I still have to get my job done. | [12:08] |
up_the_irons | mhoran: why won't OpenBSD take a machine that large? | [12:08] |
mhoran | No virtualization! | [12:09] |
mike-burns | There are better reasons to avoid git. For example, the UI sucks, the programming sucks, and the license isn't what BSD guys would want. | [12:09] |
toddf | openbsd can see more mem in current releases | [12:09] |
up_the_irons | ballen: just tried pinging your host, it still fails from the monitor | [12:09] |
toddf | I have a 4 proc system here that works quite marvelous for bulk builds | [12:09] |
up_the_irons | nice | [12:10] |
mhoran | Anyway, I love OpenBSD, and their mailing list is a good laugh. But, for most applications, it doesn't provide me with what I need.
However, it ran great on the DEC ALPHA mike-burns and I used to use as a router. :) | [12:11] |
mike-burns | Sure did.
Router/doorstop. | [12:12] |
up_the_irons | mhoran: what's funny about the list? I subscribe, but rarely read these days... | [12:15] |
