i'm trying to get the ip aliasing done at bootup from rc.conf, i've been reading you can't alias ips on the same subnet so how else would you do it

at least you have it. I have, ugh, one box in a DC with no regular kvm switch on it. Never had to pay per incident yet on it but it does jack the adrenaline up some.

mind you the DC staff will visit the console for me if there is a strange hang up. Did have a stick of ram go bad once. But it is something of a badge of honour not to screw up the machine on my own ;)
no regular console access does tend to teach one to be careful LOL
ps. on that one box I use a script I call "pftry" which dumps the rules after X seconds - that way if I do mess up, I still get back in.
And I call it from within a "screen" or tmux session so I can get back to where I was immediately
